I stayed here 3 nights while attending a conference at VMI. It’s a large, sprawling motel on the north side of town. The property is set back a couple of blocks from busy Lee Highway, so you hear no traffic noise at all. This Best Western has a faux-Colonial motif, and it’s nicely landscaped, with large comfortable rooms (my room with king bed measured about 14x27 feet). Booking through hotels.com I got the room for about $85 a night, which I thought was decent. There’s plenty of floor space even with a king bed, an upholstered chair, a desk, dresser, and a half-size refrigerator topped with a microwave. The reservation indicated a “balcony room” on the second floor, but there was no balcony, and upon inspection of the exterior of the hotel, I saw no balconies anywhere. That appears to be an imaginary feature, but it sounds nice. The bed was comfortable, and the linens were of good quality. The room was also quiet, though I had the impression that during my stay the motel had nowhere near full occupancy. The room décor is a rather icky pink and green with furniture approximating Shaker style, and the walls are adorned with cutsie Americana art, rife with pink hearts.
Wireless internet is free, very dependable, and easy to access. The flat-screen TV also worked well, has a sleep timer on it, which I appreciate, and there is a nice selection of cable channels on the menu. The bathroom is adequate, including an inexpensive plastic shower-tub where the management leaves a complimentary rubber duckie for guests. Hot water is prompt and plentiful, and the towels are of good quality. There’s also a coffeemaker in the bathroom.
The staff were friendly and accommodating to various degrees of competence. Maid service was efficient, and check-in and check-out were hassle-free. Breakfast is included in the cost of the room and is available from 6:30 to 10 a.m. The food was OK, including some hot and cold dishes, but it’s unfortunate that so much waste and refuse are generated. Not only are utensils and serving items all throw-away, the juice cups, forks, spoons and knives are also all individually wrapped in plastic (each piece wrapped separately). This seems to take concerns about sanitation to an extreme.
There are mirror swimming pools, one indoors and one outdoors, both of them small. The pools are connected by a flow-through channel that passes underneath a glass exterior wall. (The outdoor pool was closed for the season during my visit.) Unfortunately, the pool does not open before 9:00 a.m., which makes it inconvenient to swim before beginning the day. In lieu of a business center, the motel offers the use of a single PC and printer in the front lobby. I printed out my boarding pass there without difficulty. For food, there’s a Ruby Tuesdays restaurant nearby, which stays open till 11:00 p.m.
After talking to colleagues at the conference I attended about their lodgings, I believe that Best Western Plus Hunt Ridge is one of the better choices of places to stay in Lexington, and I would return and stay here again if I needed to overnight in the area.
