We stayed at Montegonzie Castle in September 2012 and although the surroundings are beautiful the accommodation is sub standard. The furniture, bedding and kitchen facilities are all in need of maintenance. The apartment we had had a broken toilet seat and a mattress that was uncomfortable and dirty – see my photos. The fridge was only just working no door on the freezer and no rails to keep your bottles in the door. As there is no food on the premises the fridge is most important… The pool area is lovely and the pool well maintained however the pool furniture is mostly broken and the few chair covers available are mouldy. The BBQ is filthy. The hot water system is unreliable at best. New towels and linen are only replaced every 7 days and there are no towels available for the pool area. We voiced some concerns to the caretaker to no avail. We tried to call the owners but were not able to connect with them. The dirt road to the “Castle” is quite bumpy however if you take it slow it is ok 4 wheel drive no problem, but would not recommend travelling on it at night.

As many have already written - it's a quite tricky road the last final gravel part to Castello di Montegonzi. I wouldn't recommend it if you plan on driving a very low car. Normal cars are fine but I would avoid sportscar. This tip is because you have to have your own wheels if you plan on staying here.

The rooms are very nice and the view spectacular. Decently equipped with kitchen things and the place was clean.

The shorter gravel "road/path" to Greve in Chianti is managable if you have a 4wheel drive car otherwise I would use the longer one via Panzano. You definately can walk but preapare with water and good shoes - it's steep...

The pool and pool area was fine.

We had a family emergency come up that meant we had to cancel our reservation at Castello di montegonzi. Monica was brilliant. Not only understanding but moved heaven and earth to ensure we got a refund. Brilliant customer service. Can't wait to check out the place on our next trip.

I recently stayed here with friends in the Camino villa. It was so disappointing. The stove was broken, the furniture dirty and worn and there was worse to come! One of the beds collapsed and the double bedroom only had a spring base with two mattresses which were too small for the bases. When we complained we were not really listened to and when the owner arrived he couldn't have cared less! We saw other rooms and they looked lovely but we were very uncomfortable. We particularly disliked the attitude of the owner and the way he treated us and the caretaker as well.
Interesting to see new mattresses and a new bed arrive in the laundry towards the end of our stay. This owner needs to lift his game. At least an apology would have been something!

We loved this hotel and would definitely return there one day. It is a bit hard to get to, we got a bit lost and you do need to drive down a dirt road for about 5min to get to the hotel, however it is absolutely worth it! The rooms are very private and set on the tuscan hillside. The view is spectacular. The housekeeper was friendly and happy to help us get around. I strongly recommend buying yourself a bottle of chianti, some local bread, vinegar and olive oil and sitting outside your room enjoying the best that life has to offer.
