Visited in September 2010 - quite impressed. Very smart hotel with a warm welcome and glass of Madeira wine at the reception welcome.

Spotless rooms with nice sea views. Excellent food at breakfast and dinner with ample choices.

evening "entertainment" is dire do take a good book! Nice clean pool areas and some lovely excursions too.

A good holiday in a quality hotel. Difficult to fault!

We have just returned from a ten day stay in Riu Palace and would highly recommend this hotel. At first glance is seemed huge but the great staff made our stay very relaxing. Rooms are spacious, all with balconies and most overlooking the sea. It is a bit off the beaten track but there is a courtesy bus to and from Funchal several times a day. Also the local bus service is cheap with a bus stop just outside of the hotel, hotel reception provided a timetable. Taxis are plentiful but we found them a bit pricey because we needed a six seater.

We stayed on a half board basis and the choice of food was amazing at both breakfast and dinner, it was a delight to visit the restaurant because of the excellent service by the very friendly staff. The poolside snack bar is also excellent.

The pool area is very well kept with no shortage of sunbeds with cushions/umbrellas and both pools are very clean. The local promenade can be reached from the pool area and turning right brings you to some local restaurants and shops but there are quite a few steps to climb. The hotel shop was a bit limited but the hotel next door has a good shop for basic supplies.

Entertainment in the evening was enjoyable with singers, dancers, a group to dance to and even a parrot show! The entertainment lounge was large so there was always plenty of seating but drinks were a bit expensive.

The biggest asset to this hotel is the wonderful staff, in all areas of the hotel they were friendly, funny, very helpful and genuinely cared for the wellbeing of the guests. They made our stay most enjoyable. A lot of guests had returned many times because of the friendly atmosphere within the hotel as well as the excellent facilities.

We have just returned home from a fantastic holiday at the Riu Palace. It was our second stay within a year and looking to return again in the near future. My husband and I enjoy a high standard throughout which this hotel provides at all times. We upgraded to sea view with balcony on arrival with no problem. The hotel is always pristine clean (and I'm fussy) from reception to pools and restaurant. The food always a good choice at breakfast and dinner if not always hot. Table service is first class, you will not be disappointed. The Pool area is quiet with no music booming out just the sound of the sea gently lapping. Transport to Funchal is provided several times a day and well worth the visit. From experience the weather is unpredictable so an umbrella would be my tip.

Room Tip: Sea views are best

This is a lovely hotel.

I was slighty worried when I read the reviews as there were mixed opinions.

I found this hotel to be extremly well run. Full of attentive staff who are only too happy to help.

Our room was very clean and serviced quickly and efficiently.

Food was plentiful and good quality

Pool area had a lot of available sun loungers and staff were on hand to provide drinks if required.

If you are looking to get away from it all this is the place for you. There is not a great deal around the hotel but a few bars and a local spa shop for water and wine etc.

There is a free coach to Funchal if needed and this was daily.

This review covers three holidays because Trip Advisor rules prevent a hotel being reviewed again until 3 months have elapsed. We went to the Riu Palace in January, February and April, a total of 6 weeks in this hotel. As the other reviews say the staff and food are good but it is a little remote. An excellent free bus service into Funchal is provided which we made full use of. Madeira is a very green island because it has a very wet climate. Take an umbrella. A previous reviewer complained about a vinyl undersheet spoiling their rest, we agree and simply took it off and the maid made the bed daily without it. The reason this hotel isn't a great one is because it falls down in two areas, security and application of rules. During our April stay my partner caught local teenagers stealing from around the pool. He had watched them come in the rear entrance using the 3 figure combination which they knew. The security at the rear is pathetic and needs beefing up with cameras and a more robust entrance system. The other hotel failing is the control of the gym. No one is in attendance and rules about under 16 year olds being forbidden are ignored. A gym is not a child's playground. I saw one child who was unable to make one machine work properly furiously kicking it. On each of our 3 stays there were problems with children in the gym. Even so I would recommend the hotel to you.

This was our 2nd stay in a Riu Hotel but our first visit to Madeira itself. The hotel, bedroom, food and facilities were absolutely first class - you are made to feel very welcome by the Staff who all work extremely hard to give you that feeling of being pampered. We had a lovely room with marvellous side sea views, the Balcony doors have blackout curtain liners so you can have a little bit of a morning lie in before you wander down to a sumptious Breakfast choice - complete with a glass of Cava if so wished! Most mornings we lazed around the 2 outdoor Pools although my Husband preferred the warmer water of the inside one which was usually deserted. In the afternoons we'd go for various walks, turning right when you leave the back Prom gate of the Hotel, up the 71 steps at the end then meandering our way through the roads and various Hotel grounds before doing a little shopping en-route back is easier than heading to the other end of the Prom where the track behind zig-zagged very steeply upwards for quite a distance but has marvellous views. We did do the walk up to Canico which is not for the faint hearted, wandered around the Town (has a small very modern shopping complex) and stopped off at the hotel Quinta Splendida to have a cold drink and walk through their lovely botanical gardens (might consider this place if we ever viisited in early Summer as it seemed cooler being higher up)
Evening meals were always a grand affair with the Maitre'd and waiters lining up at the entrance to welcome you into the Reastaurant. Food choice is extensive and so tasty. Most evenings we'd have a relaxing cocktail on the outside veranda or go for a stroll down the Prom and have a Caipirinha drink or two at Marco's Brazilian bar (next to the Dive center) - mmm...lovely!
We used the free coach into Funchal (don't miss the Fish, fruit&veg Market where you get to see the Espanada or Black Scabbard fish which is served in the restaurant) and also went on the East+West coast and Nuns Valley Thomson organised tours -all were quite interesting with a good choice of lunch time food for the 2 coastal ones although if we returned we would hire a car and drive ourselves as we did feel that a few of the stops were rather pointless. .
Any grumbles...no not really as we knew where the Hotel was situated and that it had no usable beach before we booked but we did miss having places to walk to from the Hotel itself but this would not stop us from returning but probably more as a weeks Winter hoiday destination than a 2week Summer one.
This was my Husbands holiday choice and despite the fact that we're die hard Greek Island fans I would certainly recommend the Riu Palace for a totally relaxing and pampering break - wish I was there now!
