My husband and I visited Galomar Hotel on the 1. of october. We stayed their for a week and immediately fell in love with the place. It was totally renovated just 2 month before our stay, and stood therefore spotless. The interior, the choice of furniture was a fabulous mix of modern, lounge-zen style. We especially loved the large dobble-daybeds for a couple. Bars and restaurants served fantastic food, wine and drinks, and the staff was the most serviceminded and nice people. The location and the top view over the sea tops everything. This adult hotel is absolutely worth a visit, and we are definitely coming back.

Having spent a fair few holidays on mainland Portugal, staying self catering in apartments, this was our first time on Madeira and the first time in a while staying in a hotel. Both turned out to deliver an experience to treasure. The island provides a stunning backdrop for any number of activities. The walking can take you into scenery both rugged and unexpected and for those with the need for a little more adrenaline, various activities are on offer to meet those needs.

Which leads nicely to the hotel. There can be no finer way to kick back and relax than the hotel Galomar. It has only recently undergone a major transformation, the results of which the management can be rightly proud. The overall feel is one of cool, relaxed sophistication.

Everything has been carefully thought through and with the sole purpose of making the guests feel chilled. Our room was a lovely place to spend time. The enormous bed was comfy, the balcony views excellent and only surpassed by the views from the sun terrace that were glorious.

Breakfast was another delight as we invariably had a table overlooking the Lido, which itself is artfully integrated into the surrounding rock. The food was of good quality, plentiful and in the case of the fresh comb of honey, a sweet ending to a breakfast that sets you up nicely for the day ahead.

The beauty of the Galomar is the choice it gives guests in what is available to them. If you are in the mood for pampered relaxation, the Ashoka Spa provides any number of treatments that, coupled with the authentic detailing of the spa itself, should have you chilled and ready for that next G&T. Speaking of which, the Capoeira lounge bar above the restaurant provided us with several standout moments. Sipping cocktails whilst watching the sun go down, laid back on a huge circular day bed was quite magical.

For me personally, one of the nicest things about our stay was just how friendly the staff were. The hotel is not just a nice environment for guests, but the staff appeared to genuinely enjoy working there too. Everyone was smiley, helpful and generally chilled, adding that final layer of ‘X factor’ to the whole experience.

We couldn’t have wished for a better place to stay in Madeira and have no reservations in recommending the Hotel Galomar.

Room tip: Higher floors and sea views

We stayed at Hotel Galomar in early July 2018, when it had just re-opened after a thorough refurbishment - which means that you could happily ignore comments made before this summer. The hotel is superbly located being right on the coast and close to the interesting capital of Funchal and the airport. You benefit from quick transfers (but don't get the noise of aircraft), the bus stop is just around the corner as is a good tour / activity provider). The Galomar itself offers loads of facilities - either on site (a lovely new spa with loads of different treatments on offer, and the stunning Atlantis Restaurant with fabulous views of the sea were my own favourites) or at its sister hotel (Galosol) next door. We were warmly welcomed at both hotels and were encouraged to freely enjoy all the facilities and evening entertainment at each. There is a great pizza restaurant next door, also run by the hotel - so plenty of delicious mealtime choices and at any time of day. Our spacious bedroom had a balcony which overlooked the ocean, was tastefully decorated and was exceptionally clean and comfortable. The Wifi, TV, air con and safe were all free as were the beach towels and sun loungers/ parasols. Tea & coffee-making was provided in our room, although no milk was available when we were there - apparently this is due to happen. The room might benefit from a small fridge but we didn't miss this hugely. All in all, this is a lovely hotel - the attention to detail is inspiring (such as the architecture that reflects the iconic levadas, the quality of the buildings, fixtures and fittings, the environmentally-friendly structures and systems) and the gardens (still being thoughtfully planted when we visited) promise to be spectacular. The icing on the cake was the wonderful welcome we were given and the exceptional customer care offered throughout by all staff - efficient, conscientious and professional but at the same time, genuinely warm, where 'nothing was too much trouble'. I had stayed at the Hotel Galosol previously whilst on business and was returning with my husband as a retirement treat. The hotel (and the island itself) did not disappoint - thanks to all their staff who understood and appreciated what we wanted in a holiday, we have had a fantastic time.

Room tip: Ask for a room with sea views - they're spectacular!
