Owner description: La Sinagoga del Agua has been discovered in 2007 and opened to public visits in 2010 in the monumental city of Úbeda by the family Crespo- López. It is a totally private initiative of restauration of a space hidden into several houses belonging to different families where they were living a normal life, with no idea about the greatness of the place walled into their houses. The visit costs 4,50€ per person (3,50€ kids under 12 and groups over 15 persons). All visits are guided IN SPANISH and last about 30 minutes. We have written information in ENGLISH, FRENCH, GERMAN, ITALIAN and BRAILLE Private guided visits are available, booking required, outside of the opening timetable (see calendar on web site) Information and booking: Artificis

While working on renovations of some homes, the synagogue was unearthed. It contains Jewish artifacts from hundreds of years ago and at the bottom there is a ritual bath. Don't miss that.

An unusually intact and fascinating medieval synagogue that helps you experience what it was like to live in those times.

This synagogue (now a museum) was discovered 12 years ago by a contractor who was renovating the apartment style building for apartments and stores. At one time there was a beauty parlor in the top level of the synagogue. You do not need to be (I am not) Jewish to appreciate this discovery and what went on about 700-1000 years ago. The most recent discovery was a ground water basin (steps leading to it) in the lowest level that was previously buried with trash. A wall opening allows light to shine on the basin on June 21st. The recent video may be on Youtube. You must reserve a guide for this low cost ($4.50) tour. We were part of an OAT-Overseas Adventure Back Roads of Iberia Tour and our tour leader had arranged an excellent tour by the manager of this museum.

While traveling with a tour group we had the good fortune to have an English speaking guide to tour this amazing find. While renovating these buildings into apartments the builders accidentally discovered cave like rooms and a synagogue that was once used by many Spanish Jews. The found rooms have been decorated with what they might have had back in the day. It is easy to imagine what life must have been like as you explore each room. The synagogue has a natural well with steps that lead into a pool of water. During summer solstice there is an opening that lets the sun shine on the water. Just sitting in this room is amazing as it dates back over 5000 years, way before the synagogue was used. This is a magical place and a hidden gem not to be missed when visiting Ubeda.

On our drive to Madrid, we made a stop in Ubeda (a World Heritage site) for a guided walking tour in English arranged through Artificis. One of our stops was the Sinagog del Agua, which turned out to be a great surprise from one room to another. All together there are seven rooms, including the synagogue area with women’s gallery and a micve. Sunlight enters the micve at the time of the summer solstice and a few days before and after. We found the visit fascinating and a step back in time. We were spellbound. It was another sober reminder of the history and fate of the Jews in Spain.
