Owner description: La Sinagoga del Agua has been discovered in 2007 and opened to public visits in 2010 in the monumental city of Úbeda by the family Crespo- López. It is a totally private initiative of restauration of a space hidden into several houses belonging to different families where they were living a normal life, with no idea about the greatness of the place walled into their houses. The visit costs 4,50€ per person (3,50€ kids under 12 and groups over 15 persons). All visits are guided IN SPANISH and last about 30 minutes. We have written information in ENGLISH, FRENCH, GERMAN, ITALIAN and BRAILLE Private guided visits are available, booking required, outside of the opening timetable (see calendar on web site) Information and booking: Artificis

This is an amazing place but the best way to see it is with Andrea Pezzini who is the director of the synagogue. He runs the tour agency ArtificiS. He speaks English, French and Italian so that covers a lot of possibilities! He knows all about the discovery of the synagogue and tells the story so you can follow the excitement of the peeling back of the onion layers as they unearthed different parts. He is passionate about rediscovering what the life of the Jews was like at the time of this synagogue.

By the way, he also gives a great tour of the town and makes it fascinating. We weren’t sure we cared about visiting the town but he made it so interesting. And he is very reasonably priced.

Úbeda ended up being one of our favorite places in Spain, and that’s after hitting the main attractions of Seville, Córdoba and Granada. It was such a lovely, quiet town - we felt like we had discovered a special little jewel.

The sinagoue "of the water", discovered in 2007, draws its name from the two fountains inside.
Underneath, there is a ritual bath (mikve).
Visits take place each 45 minutes, the last one at 20h00' (!).
Very nicely reconstituted.
Worth every minute and the 4.5 € ticket.

In this magnificent Renaissance town it was quite a surprise to come across this amazing recent discovery. The synagogue has been beautifully restored and gives a fascinating insight to life in 13th Century Ubeda and Jewish history. The informative tour is in Spanish but easy-to-read English language booklets provide everything the non-Spanish speaker needs to know. Highly recommended.

I didn’t expect much and was pleasantly surprised at the history behind this synagogue. Walk they tour is in Spanish only but they offer an English guide pamphlet of ~10 pages with pictures and commentary to follow along easily moving from room to room.

I’ve been to a fair number of Jewish historical sites in Europe and this is one of the most interesting, not least because of the story of its rediscovery. Tours are given only in Spanish - which I hope can be remedied in future - but English speakers are given a folder with complete information. The guide was very vivacious and conveyed a lot of enthusiasm for the building.
