My husband and I did not know what to expect but we hoped to have a wonderful time. Melia Cayo Coco delivered. The resort and beach were beautiful and the staff were so warm, welcoming and helpful. We were greeted by the most wonderful gardeners every day. By the end of our stay we had quite a collection of creatures created from palm leaves and two hats. The wait staff and and bartenders were all wonderful.
We were lucky enough to get reservations at all three of the a la carte restaurants. The Arena restaurant was a real treat with the live band playing Cuban music. The buffet was excellent with plenty of options for everyone. Your drinks are always topped up before you realize it needed to be. You can enjoy beautiful music from the piano in the lobby bar.
The rooms were great. Someone mentioned if you ask for a king bed you get two doubles pushed together, that is not always the case. We enjoyed a true king sized bed. The shower always had plenty of pressure and lots of hot water, although I prefer the cool shower after days in the sun.
The beach is stunning, we spent all of our days there, never stepped foot in the pool. If you bring bread to the beach you can have schools of fish swimming around you.
We met wonderful people and enjoyed the new friendships formed.
We definitely plan to return to the Melia and would highly recommend this wonderful resort to anyone.

Room Tip: I am sure that the lagoon rooms are great for the sunrise and sunsets but after wandering the entire...

Well our 2nd time back to the Melia. Our first was in 2010 for a wedding and it was lovely to come back 2 years later to see all the positive changes in the hotel for another celebration (50th birthday). All of the staff, right down to the gardeners remembered our group from 2 years ago which was touching as you can only imagine how many guests they will see within a 2 year period. It felt like coming home again when we pulled up outside to the welcome party from the animation team with champagne and cold towels (a nice touch in the heat I must say). Our room was ready immediately with no wait (we expected a little as you need to learn to live on 'Cuban Time', which we don't mind).
It was great to see the animation team especially Yunet, Emileidy and Pepe with his "Coconuts" from last time, they made our stay a very enjoyable one and were always there to help.
Orlando and Joseph from the Billiard Bar are just fabulous. Their personalities and helpfulness are so infectious and you certainly look forward to the evening when you can pop by after tea and have drinks and a few games of pool whilst listening to some really good music both the oldies and recent hits.
On the day of Mums 50th birthday it was made special from the beginning. We went down to the beach and watched the most perfect sunrise (around 7am so not too early). What more can you ask for on such a special day. The girls (3 of us) then spent an afternoon in the spa (we went 2 years ago for the 'hen do') and were delighted to go back. I would recommend this trip to anyone as for 49 CUC (about £35) it's a bargain for the treatments you get and the facilities, oh and not forgetting the strawberry daiquiri's ;). For this sort of experience in the UK you'd expect to pay well over £100!! After the spa we then had our obligatory 'garden parties', (we had 3 rooms next to each other so took it in turns to 'host' on our patios), where 2 bottles of champagne awaited us to start Mums celebrations. We then spent the evening in the International Restaurant. It has a beautiful setting on the Lagoon but the menu has changed. I must say we preferred the old a la carte menu where you can choose but the new menu is a taster menu of 7 courses with a mix of meats and fish both hot and cold. Different and edible but preferred the old way. Regardless we had a great time with birthday cake and wine flowing. Definitely a day to remember!
We had a wonderful time and the friends we made there made it even better. The only downside was an incident with a couple of members from a Canadian Wedding party, I won't go into detail as other reviews have but their behaviour was childish and reckless at times. (Don't let this put you off as it is a rarity. You can't stop idiots going on holiday but we didn't let it ruin ours.)
We will definitely be going back again in a couple of years. Everything about the resort is amazing and will take your breath away. Thank you to everyone who made it a holiday to remember for all the right reasons and we can't wait to come back to the Melia for the 3rd time soon. Steph and Paul xx

We had the pleasure of staying at the Melia Cayo Coco for a week and it was the first time I was ever sad to be going home. We had the pleasure of meeting some wonderful Newfoundlanders, a lady from Ontario and a couple from Saskatchewan that we have kept in touch with since returning home. The resort is amazing, just the right size. The staff couldn't do enough for you and if someone asked me to what I liked the least....it would have to be that I had to come home.

We will be back next year for sure. Meeting a few of the new found friends to spend another vacation in the closest place to heaven on earth. Thank you to everyone that made our vacation a trip to remember.

Room Tip: There is no bad room but the Lagoon rooms have the most wonderful sunrises and sunsets.

Where do I begin, so many things to say, and 99.99% are all good.
First of all, if you already have opinion that this hotel is not worth the money, as you believe everything all the 'haters' have put, then do everyone a favour, and don't book. They will all have a wonderful holiday, and will enjoy it a lot more without you.

I wont lie, there is a few niggles here and there, but you will forget about them when your over powered by the service of 99% of the staff.

I say 99%, we never had a great time when trying to get service at the 'pool bar'. The staff just didn't seem to care, or want to serve us, apart from the student (Estudiante) waiters and servers. But we only went in a few times, and only when the students were present.
This poor service was then mirrored when the standard staff from the pool bar got moved to the 'Arena' restaurant in the day time, during the final days of our holiday. Again, the students made up for this ten fold.

Why all the complaints about the buffet? No choice? What? Oh, that's why, you took 5 plates each sitting, piled them high with everything, and didn't stop for breath as you shovelled it all down...
There is plenty to choose from, and gluttony is a sin. DROP THE FORK!
I don't think I ate the same meal twice from the buffet, the choice was amazing everyday.

3 evening restaurants, all need to be booked in advance.
The Arena, Cuban-esque food, we felt rushed, and didn't go for our second booking.
The Italian, our favourite, both visits just as good as the other. Best out of the 3.
The International, was great the first time, 7 courses of 'taster' dishes. with a fantastic coffee to finish. Second time, the chef may have been different, and wasn't to the same standard. We dressed up nicely, and so should you, ignore those who think beach wear is acceptable everywhere...

The staff, just to mention a few...
Pepe (Animation)- find him and his coconut cocktails ASAP around the pool or along the beach, you will not regret it
Alex (Animation)- Full of life, and a great tour guide. Friday mornings, 10am in the lobby is the meeting point for a tour either on the train or mini-vans. For 10CUC, you will not regret it. Bat caves, lovely beach (not Pilar beach), and local bar to finish, takes you up to about 2pm'ish, and when you get back, its 'CUBA DAY'!
Yusmelkia, Arley Geidy and the chefs in the buffet were brilliant. Great service all the 2 weeks.
Grimmy (Lobby bar waiter) - Always ready to take our order.
Michel (Lobby barman) - Perfect cocktails everytime
Yamil (Beach barman) - Always with the music, and the great drinks
Felipe (Gardener), most of the time with Pepe, but always with a smile, took a shine to my missus' toes, lol
DJ Dani (Animation) for a fantastic set in the lobby on the Wednesday night
Gypsy (Guest Services) - Always there when we needed her.
Katy (Thomas Cook rep) - for recommending the great trips we went on.

The reception staff was a bit hit and miss, well, hit in the day time, and miss in the evening, the two women were a little jobs-worthy. We tried to change some Sterling up for the next morning as we had to be out early for a trip (Now thats what i call... CUBA!), and they rejected about £50 due to slight rips and hand written amounts. What Sterling note hasn't got a slight rip or an amount or written word on it? So top tip, just in case, get as fresh a notes as possible to take with you.

There was an altercation whilst there, a wedding party got a little out of hand. But this didn't affect our stay, but the Chinese whispers were quite interesting...

We met a some great people out there, some couples who have been to the Melia several times. We understand why. Our Toronto clubbing buddies were a laugh!

Onto a few bad bits, as no holiday is complete without them (only 0.01% as previously mentioned in the first paragraph)
Our AirCon unit failed and leaked into the wardrobe (nothing got damaged). We only noticed in the evening, about 10pm. I called guest services, and within 15 minutes an engineer was with us retro repairing the unit. 9am the next morning, he was back to properly fix the unit. No more problems after this.
The coffee maker didn't work properly, again, one quick call, and it was changed to a new one within 10 minutes.

Overall, yes, its not a 5 star UK/US, its 5 star Cuban which is 5 star in our eyes. You will not regret booking the Melia CayoCoco, especially when you've visited/seen the other hotels...
And the only other hotel worth a mention is the neighbour, The Sol, due to its better shopping, and proper Coca-Cola (Well proper Mexican Coca-Cola...). 600ml for 1CUC

The flight out with Thomas Cook was great, the flight back however was worse than EasyJet/RyanAir. A night flight, with about 2 hours worth of lights off. The 'team' were more interested in selling the over priced snacks, and the duty free, and they ran out of coin change, Which seemed to have put them back about an hour on their schedule, so they rushed everything else. But don't let this put you off going!

If your still with me, then a few tips for you...
- Book the airport lounges, pay the extra, get quiet time, and get a few drinks for the plane, as the snacks are bloody expensive on the plane!
- Take a bath plug if you like baths, not showers
- Fresh/New unmarked Sterling to change to CUC Peso
- Underwater cameras, at least 3/4 disposables if your unfortunate enough to not own a digital
- Book restaurants as early as possible, as soon as you arrive to get decent times.
- Pool bar service is very hit and miss
- Remember to take any drinks out of the fridge you haven't drunk the day before, before you leave in the morning, you'll be fully replenished, and could build yourself a nice little stock for trips/evenings
- The 'dont reserve sun loungers' rule isnt upheld. Be at the beach/pool before 730am to get a decent spot/shade.
-Take your own beach towels for said reserving. If you loose your Melia one, its 20CUC to replace it...
- Santander (Alliance&Leicester) is classed as a US credit card. They dont take US cards.
- If you want constant bar service in the lobby, don't sit on the sofas opposite the check-in desk (Avoid Jonne-Paul(?), he chases tips, and wont come back if you dont tip instantly, or forgets your drinks...)
-Tipping 5CUC is about 20 pesos to the Cubans, how many bars do you tip £20? 1CUC is a decent tip.
- Animation trip on the Friday mornings is a must! 10am, 10CUC for a great morning!
- Whether it be a day trip on the island/hotel hopper bus, or with the Catamaran trip, Pilar Beach is must see, you will not regret it.
- Don't put your clothes/towels/beach bag on the bed when returning from the beach. This is not only common sense, but is also the way everyone who complains about being bitten in the night gets bitten, as bugs can transfer via your stuff. (Mainly ants)
- This is an adult only complex, you will not regret it.
- The French will arrive, and take over. They are rude. We watched them 'steal' a gents table in the lobby bar, even though his drink and items were still on the table, and he'd gone to the toilet! Their table manners at the buffet where a lot to be desired.

Travelled with Thomas Cook 9-23/4/2012
Stayed in room 7714, near the tennis courts and sports hut, but it was never busy, so no noise.

In summary, we loved it, our friends loved it, we are returning, and cant wait!

Enjoyed myself much more here than at the Sol Palmeras Varadero last time . The shows were in a much better forum because it was stadium seating and provided an excellent view , unlike the Sol Palmeras where it was level seating and I couldn't see over everyone's head. The accommodation was also much better here , my room was a lot cooler and I even had an outdoor patio . The dining room was much easier to find , along with the beach as well . People who worked here were much friendlier also . My only complaint would be that they didn't have a Chinese restaurant here, like they did at the Sol Palmeras and also the Ocean was a lot choppier here than it was in Varadero .

We arrived at and were made to feel totally comfortable within minutes !! The rooms were fine and maids made up swans and elephants out of the towels and blankets including one with an umbrella.!!!! THE food was excellent, the staff was above and beyond and when we left it was like leaving good friends. The beach was great with lots of cabanas, bar was close,. A small resort (which was great) NO KIDS, Lots of people from different cultures which was even more wonderful, we met people from Argentina who spoke very little English, we spoke very little Spanish and mixed in with the Brits and fellow Canadians we had a ball.Nothing but compliments on the entire Hotel ,staff and everything else.Already planning next year at the same location. Loved it !!!

My husband and I stayed at the Melia Cayo Coco April 12 - April 18 2012 and had a fantastic time. The staff are fabulous and really friendly. Yes a tip is appreciated and sometimes necessary in the lounge if you want the waiter to come back, but no different than other resorts. The rooms were perfect and had a cottage feel, yes they could use updating but perfect for us and excellent for Cuba. Our room did have 2 double beds pushed together and we would have preferred a king bed but at the end of the day we worked around it without any issues. We found the entire resort spotless, and saw absolutly no bugs, the gardners were such a pleasure every time we walked by and made us 3 hats out of plam leaves, which were beautiful. I have seen pictures posted of items or areas requiring updating, I believe that the person who took those photos went looking for something negative because we did not see anything like those photos anywhere on the property. We also found the food excellent, all you can eat grilled to order T-bones steak and different cuts of beef and pork, grilled chicken, fish salmon and a few times grilled to order Lobster. The pasta and omlette bar were also fantastic and I loved Alexandro's bannana crepes every morning. The grill on the beach was just as fresh. Every day they would grill 8 to 10 chickens over an open fire and a few days had a whole pig on the spit. The Grill also offerred additional choices of ordering hamburgers, fries, hotdogs, chicken cesar salad as well as a buffett. I was worried at first about the food because of bad reviews regarding food in Cuba but will say that the food was fantastic, fresh and lots of choices. The ala carte resteraunts were also fantastic, make sure you book your resteraunts early to make sure you get in. We did not hear any complaints of anyone getting sick at all and we ate everything offered. We did find the service at the pool bar very poor and were actually ignored a few times, however we spent everyday on the beautiful, clean beaches where the bar service was excellent. This resort does not have a bank on site so make sure you bring enough cash with you. The bonus of all was the 18 and over only rule which is exactly what we wanted, no kids! It took us a few days before we realized that even though there is a posted "no reserving chairs" sign at the pool and beach, we had no choice but to get up early and put towels on loungers at the beach to make sure we got shade. If we didn't then by early afternoon all shade areas were taken. Philipe (spelling?) and his coconut drinks on the beach were excellent and he is a joy to be around. I could go on and on....overall the Melia Cayo Coca was FANTASTIC!! and we will definetly book again.

Room Tip: Ask for a king bed or you will receive two double beds pushed together!
