I have done this many times and it is free from trafic and easy riding. You ride through farm lands and can then ride back to your starting point down the sealed road which is only bussy when a train is about to call which is 3 to 4 times a day

It's long enough but not too long, and a good relatively flat ride through farmland. We had four 13 year old boys who brought their bikes from Wellington on the train and came to our house from the station on their bikes. And vice versa. Brilliant!

The Greytown Trail is a scenic 5km walking and cycling track connecting Greytown's quieter streets to the nearest train station at Woodside. We cheated and drove half way and walked to the Woodside train station with our kids on our backs (in carriers). The 3 year old was delighted to see the train arrive then depart at Woodside station.
The walk is easy and flat, essentially alongside farmland so is like meandering through the country. Definitely a great activity to do if you're in Greytown. Next time we'll take bikes and the kids can easily cope with it plus the bonus of a train station is always a highlight with little people and is also buggy-able.
