Recently I had breakfast at the Waikokou cafe in the Waitangi Treaty grounds in Paihia. Over the past 10 years I have been to this cafe many time. There are some good aspects but always factors that totally let it down.

The good: The food is above average. We had the eggs Benedict. The eggs were poached to perfection, the spinach was abundant. The hollandaise sauce was lemony and eggy and just the right balance with a good amount on the dish. The bacon did not appear to be boiled but was heavy on the rind factor. I’m not certain what cut they used but it was full of rind. The decor and location is great. Good indoor/outdoor seating options. There are ducks for kids to watch and a pond for amusement.

The bad: The food takes an inordinately long time to be brought. Every time. I have no idea what they do in that kitchen as we were again one of the few people in the cafe. The service! Grumpy sullen waitron. We were also played some sort of rap music, mysogynistic and a bit unappealing over eggs.

Would I go back? Probably. As Copthorne's breakfast is worse and going into town can be a mission. Also the coffee is good, which is a silver lining!

We called here after our visit to Waitangi. Good coffee, huge pieces of cake, which the staff were happy to divide onto 2 plates, each with cream for no extra charge. Seating inside,on the decking and on the lawn. Very cheeky tame ducks!

We were all happy with our meals, very simple but nice flavours. Plenty of shade for hot or rainy days, coffee was good.

We visited this cafe for lunch. We had been the last time we were in Paihia and although not blown away by the food, thought we would give it another chance to possibly redeem itself! Alas! Not so!

The cafe was VERY quiet - only a handful of patrons scattered around, however the service was extremely slow despite hardly anyone there. I even had to ask where our food was! We had finished our coffees a long time ago. To make matters worse, all that was required in the preparation (if you can call it that) of our order was heating of a pie and a pastry. One girl there was dreadfully sour and to add insult to injury, she seemed to have a cold and sneezed near the food, without turning her head or putting her hand up to her mouth. If we hadn't had already ordered, we wouldn't have bothered staying!

The food when it came was unappetising and quite tasteless - very disappointing!

Such a shame about this cafe since the location is gorgeous. Just needs to have someone with a passion for great food and some good (healthy) cheerful staff. Here's hoping!......
