Wrote this review today after our second visit to Popeyes. Our first visit was in the spring. We don’t have this chain in Vancouver, BC but someone had recommended it to us so we have stopped here twice when visiting the States. We did our research before eating here so we knew it was a typical a chain restaurant with the closest comparison being KFC. This Popeyes is a standalone restaurant located on the backside (away from the I-5) of Cascade Mall.
The menu generally consists of a bunch of chicken items and various sides including fries, mashed potatoes, biscuits, etc (check out their website). They seem to also have some kind of rotating promo item (like shrimp).
This time we split one of their current promo's, the Rip’n Chick’n combo which came with a chicken tender-like chicken, fries, a biscuit, and a drink which came out to $7 after tax. I really like the chicken here because the way they batter the pieces, they have a nice crispy coating. We’ve lucked out because each time our chicken has been hot and fresh. However, I’m somewhat concerned about freshness because when ordering I have seen what seems to be chicken sitting there under a heat lamp. Plus, this time, our fries were likely sitting there for a while because they were just warm. The fries are supposed to be cajun battered fries. They looked different but didn’t really taste special which I’m assuming was partly due to them not being fresh. And the biscuit was only ok; nothing special.
I find the food here a bit pricey but not outrageous. It’s kind of in line with KFC. They seem to have a two piece deal there on Tuesdays, so that’s when to go.
We found this restaurant a bit dirty. Both visits there were flies in the dining area. The first visit, the tables were a bit sticky. This visit, the washrooms were a bit gross with paper towels on the floor and none in the dispenser (but at least they had a hand dryer).
Service was a bit lacking. Even though the restaurant was empty and no cars in the drive through, we had to wait a few minutes before the one window person finished what they were doing before being able to take our order. Later, we watched as the next couple was ignored while the window person took a drive thru order.
Overall, we like the chicken (and shrimp) here when it’s fresh and are indifferent about the sides. We’ll likely eat Popeyes again sometime in the future but only if we get a craving for it. Unfortunately, this location is the closest to Vancouver, BC but we’ll likely try to skip it in favour of a different location on our way to Seattle or Portland.
