“Overrated and overcharged”
Reviewed 17 September 2011

I was sorely disappointed with this place and would not recommend it to others. The biggest reasons are described below:
a) the 'pond suite' is the basement of their house with a bedroom and living area, but it had a dank musty smell, was cold and dark, and was not well ventilated. Although sliding doors opened to a deck and pond, the screen door would not operate properly, and the wasps were so plentiful, we couldn't get air into the place.
b) a second bed was in the living area and I had assumed for their $200/night charge, it would include the use of that bed - but alas, they charged me $25 PER NIGHT for my son to sleep there, saying it was for the extra cost of washing the sheets. We never even had them change the sheets! This was an undisclosed fee, and while I contested it with the host, he insisted it was a required charge. It is standard that when you rent a room, you rent the entire room, and this was clearly a rip-off.
c) they clearly do not wash or change everything between guests. Kitchen linens were not clean, they had stale gummy hard candies in a dish, and there were dead bugs lying around the windows. In the bathroom, they give you an assortment of USED hotel lotions and shampoos and what appeared to be leftover toiletries from previous visitors. Ughh!
d) although the hosts are from France and the food was not bad, it is not what I would call healthy and plentiful. The small egg souffle and croissant were fine, but watch out for the baked brie in puff pastry and three very tiny creme puffs with ONE strawberry. They make a good cup of coffee, but they certainly make no attempt to keep your cup full.

The grounds and location of the Old Trout Inn are not bad, but it is certainly not a place to which I would ever return and I certainly don't recommend it no matter how 'charming' the advertisements and other reviews are.

Quel domage!

Should we ever return to Orcas Island, we will most definitely return to Old Trout B&B...a totally relaxing get-away complete w/delicious French cuisine, situated on 5 beautiful acres. Your hosts, Henri and Nicole, will ensure that your stay is a memorable one! Should you choose to have dinner prepared for you, we can say without a doubt, the duck and salmon en croute were fabulous.

Old Trout Inn is one of the finest bed and breakfast by far. Fifth generation authentic french cuisine is a must try served up with a personal touch. Serene settings and spacious rooms with hot tub accommodations makes relaxing unavoidable . If you are looking for your own slice of heaven at a great price you can't go wrong.

Hosts Henri and his wife are from France, and greatly devoted to the quality and authenticity of their French cuisine (both breakfast and dinner are available). Their hospitality is second to none; I've never seen anyone more devoted to ensuring that their guests enjoy a pleasant and comfortable stay. Our room was extremely comfortable and well-appointed, with a wood fire in our own fireplace every evening. The location was convenient to Orcas Village, Deer Harbor, Eastsound, and the new hiking trails on Turtleback Mountain on the west side of Orcas Island. Most rooms have a private outdoor hot tub and views over a fairly large and lovely pond where we spent some enjoyable time during the rainy spells identifying ducks such as hooded mergansers and scaups. Highly recommended.

When we arrived we were in awe of the beautiful grouds and gardens ont he property. The more we explored the more impressed we were. Our room was spacoius and very well kept. Henri and Nicole (the innkeepers) were so caring and great to us. and the food... breakfast each morning was so simple but so amazing. We ahd an amazing souflee one morning and a smoke salmon tart the next. All in all this place was almost too god, we wanted to just hang out a the Inn instead of exploring the island more.

After spending the previous night at a very disappointing and highly overpriced "Resort" in Mitchell Bay on San Juan Island, the Old Trout Inn B&B was an absolutely wonderful surprise. For exactly the same price as at the so-called "Resort", we received truly first-class accomodations, service and hospitality. Henri was exceptionally pleasant and professional in greeting and orienting us (my sister and I, and my Standard Poddle) to the "cabin". We explored the grounds, walking through gardens and around the pond, before heading off to dinner at the restaurant Henri recommended to us -- Deer Harbor Inn Restaurant, a superb experience from start to finish. Henri served us Nicole's wonderful French breakfast in our cabin. My dog and I again wandered the grounds, enjoying the many pleasing aspects, before leaving for the ferry. This was the first B&B experience for both of us, and we couldn't have been more pleased.

We found the Old Trout Inn on the internet and what a treasure. We will be going back for our third stay in March. The pond and lilly pads are beautiful. The gardens have hidden treasures around every turn. It is so quiet and peaceful there. The hosts are wonderful. The food, ahhhhhh the food. Home made crousants, souffles, wonderful fresh fruit. You can purchase a dinner which is well worth the experience. Personalized attention and your taste buds will dance for hours . Highly recommended
