“Stop by to watch wooden boat building”

Northwest Maritime Center
Reviewed September 9, 2017

The NW Maritime Center is two big buildings where you can learn more about wooden boat building, they also store rowing shells and a few other boats. There is a great gift shop and coffee shop in the complex also. And the weekend after Labor Day they put on one of the biggest wooden boat events in the country, The Wooden Boat Festival. It's been happening for over 40 years and is great for fun and learning. The city adds over 10,000 people to the population that weekend. Get reservations early, as the city fills up and people often need to go to nearby cities for lodging. It's great fun!

This was worth the stop. Very interesting; even the teenagers in our group found this exceptional. The people were very happy to point out interesting things, show us some of the tricks, and we generally had a good time.

Wow! Kids were building a boat in one week! And there's a navigation training available as well. The Maritime Center is a GREAT experience. It's a working center and a good place to volunteer!

Very enjoyable to see works in progress. We go every year to the Wooden Boat Festival. The town has so many boating related sites as well as the boats that are in the harbor

Learn about Thea Foss, the inspiration for Tugboat Annie, see wooden boats, maritime memorabilia, Mosquito Fleet information and more. Several interesting collections. For kids there is a marine life touch tank and harbor clean up education. A must-do when in Tacoma.
