“I've stayed here several times--looking forward to the next!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 February 2012

I have stayed at Stonewall when it was selected as the site for Rotary meetings. We've stayed there with our son and daughter-in-law and grandchildren. Love the pool. We've also attended the Culinary Classic in 2011. The next one is March 9, 10, 11, 2012. We're looking forward to that event. What we have found particularly pleasing are the attitude and manner of the Stonewall employees. They are always courteous and helpful. We've sat at table with the General Manager and the HR Manager and their spouses--delightful folk. We've had the pleasure of meeting and visiting with the F&B Manager and Chef Paco. We can't say enough nice about these people as well.

We stayed the week-end as a package including ballroom dance lessons, dancing, and hotel room. Very nice package, reasonably priced. Meals at the restuarant were very good, the resort is great, clean, and well-staffed. This time (this is our second trip to the resort) we made it to the indoor/outdoor heated pool and spa-and both are very nice. Haven't played golf at the resort yet, but the course looks awesome.

Room Tip: Lake views are nice

This will be the fifth year my husband and I will attend the culinary event in March. We have been very pleased with the resort and the staff, so pleased that each year we have increased our party, (this year we will bring 5 other couples with us to the event). I did however send an e-mail concerning last year's event, in which I wrote that the event was not up to what we had expected based on our previous years and do hope that this year we will be as pleased as we have been in the other 4 years attending. By the way no one responded to my e-mail. But please do yourself a favor, see the rsort for yourself it is very nice.

We spent New Years eve at Stonewall Jackson Resort for the second year in a row. The resort is nice, as usual. They offered a New Years Eve deal again this year, for $257 per couple you get 1 night, dinner in Stillwaters with champagne, brunch the next day and a 2pm checkout.

As always, the staff was friendly, I find that typical in WV, even when I work down there. The resort was about the same as last year, my room may have been a tad not as nice, but it was clean. I thought it odd that there was no frig in the room, but no big deal.

The dinner is a $34/person charge built into the package, IMO, not worth it. Prime rib that was dangerously rare, shrimp on a stick that was nasty, and if you didn't look real close, you missed the seafood all together. Both sides of the buffet are identical EXCEPT, there was only seafood on one end. The oysters and mussles were marginal, I had to ask for our champagne and then they only gave me a 1/2 glass. I don't think our waiter was ever a waiter before, more like a parking lot attendant that was drug downstairs because of the crowd, polite never the less. The brunch was OK, probably better last year. I would describe the buffet as compared to other times I have had it as if they "cheaped out".

Now the festivities .... they had a band in the lounge, same band as last year, enjoyed them again, they play just about anything! Drinks are EXPENSIVE, $11 for 2 draft beers, I was afraid to order a mixed drink. The pool and hot tubs were open, the nice 50's day made it able to be used outdoors, a big fire burning in the outdoor ring where you can wonder out with your drink and hang out if you want. The pool and pool area was clean, a nice little break being able to use that. A late 2pm checkout was included, that was nice, made it a nicer slow pace.

Would I go back again for the 3rd year, probably but I would consider paying regular rate and ordering from the menu to skip the buffet. It was a comfortable sized crowd, not a standing room only mob scene. The crowd was easy going and everyone had fun.

I found it disturbing that a few people brought their dogs! There were a couple of people with those little yapping lap dogs walking up and down the hall. IMO, that is completely inappropriate for a resort such as this. I was prepared and ready to light up the phone at the desk if I heard those things barking as I did earlier, fortunately no issue. They just built a HUGE wooden bridge going from the Campground to the resort, probably 100 yards long, real nice even if you just want to take a walk. Let's see if the Campgound kids kill anyone this summer with their bikes.

Houseboats ..... I have rented them 4 times over the years. Be advised, they got rid of them all! I was told that they were getting old and they needed work, I would agree that they needed freshening, they were 1998 boats. Little more to that story, but never the less, no more boats! Too bad, that was a great way to vacation!

Searching the Internet for a place to stay during my visit to the West Virginia Museum of American Glass in Weston, I came across a link for the Stonewall Resort. Little did I know that this AAA four-diamond rated resort was a real gem built along the 26-mile long, 26,000-acre Lake Stonewall, the state’s second largest.
Steve Ludwig, sales director, claims the lake has some great fishing and his staff are able to connect anglers with experienced fishing guides in the area. If the large 50-inch long, 40-pound preserved muskie caught in the lake and mounted over the bar at the resort’s T.J. Muskie’s tavern is any indication the fishing should be great.
If you like serenity, keep in mind that the resort is set in the middle of a 20,000 acre federal wildlife management area, 2,000 acres of which is leased to West Virginia as a state park. If you like physical activity, the resort offers guided Segway tours, an indoor/outdoor pool that connects via an opening in the wall, nine miles of hiking trails, a basketball court and, most importantly, an Arnold Palmer Signature golf course, ranked number two in the state behind the Greenbrier by "Golf Week" magazine.
The198-room inn is designed in the style of a 1920s Adirondack resort with modern amenities and Mission style elements such as exposed post and beam and stacked stone walls.
"We’re the state’s only AAA-rated four-diamond resort," said Ludwig. "To put that in perspective, only about 2% of the lodging companies across the nation get a four-diamond rating."
For those who like to be pampered, the Mountain Laurel Spa offers organic massages and facial treatments, but one of my favorite ways to relax is to sit outdoors on the massive patio overlooking the lake, nudge up to the huge fire pit that accommodates about 20 sitters and buy a "hobo pack," a kerchief wrapped assortment of graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate tied to a stick and cook up a batch of S’mores.

Room Tip: Make sure you get onbe overlooking the lake.

We enjoyed a spectacular Thanksgiving holiday at the Stonewall Resort. Our stay could not have been better. The resort is a ten minute drive off of I-79 in the beautiful setting of the Stonewall Jackson State Park and Game Refuge. Unfortunately we missed the fall leaves but even with bare trees the lake and hills are lovely. The resort building was built in 2002 and still feels new. There is a center area where the lobby, restaurants, pool and fitness center are located, and the rooms are in two three story wings.

The first thing that has to be acknowledged is that this is not the Greenbrier (which is one of our favorite places) and I suspect some of the other reviewers were looking for white glove service. Instead, it is a family resort located in a state park where children can safely walk around on their own, people could sit by the fire with their dog, and you feel comfortable without a suit and tie. The resort has a four diamond AAA rating which I think it easily deserves, plus, the room rates were less than a lot of comparable properties. There is valet parking but the main parking lot is an easy walk and there are bellmen available but you don’t feel obligated to use them.

The rooms are large and extremely clean. The rooms have all the normal amenities and the beds are comfortable. The heating and air conditioning system actually responds to the thermostat (which is nice in the fall when you may need heat at night and air conditioning in the day) plus the windows open.

There is one restaurant (Stillwaters) and a bar where you can get sandwiches. There is also a restaurant in the golf club house which was closed for the season when we were there. We were a party of six which included two children, a vegan, and a person with a lot of food allergies. The menu for every meal accommodated all of us. There is an excellent buffet at breakfast, lunch and dinner or you can order off the Stillwaters menu or the bar’s sandwich menu. The food has a strong Appalachian influence (root vegetables and berry sauces). But our vegan and everyone else found plenty of choices. The food was fresh, very tasty and very attractively plated. The prices were equal to or below what you would expect at a hotel or resort. Kids eat at half price and kids under 8 eat free. There is also a children’s menu with the normal kids stuff. But the best part was the Thanksgiving buffet, which was probably the best I have every had in a restaurant. The cool part was that they offered left over turkey as a menu item for the two following nights.

The indoor/outdoor pool was excellent and the fitness center was on the larger side of hotel standard. Each night they had a fire pit outside the restaurant and supplied graham crackers, marsh mellows, chocolate and sticks to roast marsh mellows and make smokes.

The people working at the resort are wonderful, genuinely nice people. The service was excellent. There were a couple of times that the restaurant and bar got slammed with people but everyone was relaxed and enjoyed themselves. It is the most kid friendly, pet friendly resort I have ever been to.

All in all, I literally can’t think of a single thing wrong with the Stonewall resort and we have already made reservations to return next Thanksgiving.

Room Tip: The walk to the end of the hotel wings can be a bit long so you might want to ask for something clos...
