Canoe Bay was the perfect retreat.

You are checked in by the most courteous staff, who explains a detailed map of the property. Another staff member then greets you at your room/cottage to help you with your bags and orient you to the room, which is sumptuously furnished with comfy leather furniture, incredible bed, and fireplace. You dress for dinner, which is a formal affair in the dining room for couples only, overlooking the lake, and have one of the finest meals ever (and we've lived in NYC and Boston), with impeccable presentation and service, and prepared using organic and locally grown foods. After a peaceful and romantic night, you are awakened at the time of your choosing by a knock on the door announcing your breakfast has arrived. This you enjoy on your private deck overlooking the lake, wrapped in one of their luxurious robes. You put on one of the CD's they have supplied as you dress and head out for a morning of hiking the trails (we preferred them for a run only, no leisurely stroll, due to the August mosquitoes, which were a problem only in the woods), kayaking, canoeing, or swimming off the dock. Your picnic lunch or cheese plate arrives at your room, and you enjoy it at one of the many scattered picnic locations along the lake. Next, peruse the thoughtfully and expansively stocked library, or continue your morning activities. Then prepare for another evening feast! Needless to say, we had a fabulous time - exemplary service, accommodations, and food. No phones. Brief encounters with the other guests, who were all friendly, laid back, and enjoying themselves. Just the restorative experience and time to reconnect that we needed. And, as a lesbian couple, the only flak we received was the indiscreet whisper of a fellow guest at dinner, whom the staff automatically served dinner to in a very rapid-fire succession as they slowed our service, so that we quickly regained a most comfortable and pleasant dining experience.
Also, dinner is a set menu for everyone - there are not choices, which was actually really fun, waiting to see what the evening would bring. I dislike fish and seafood, however, and the chef accommodated this even at the last minute, preparing fabulous gourmet dishes just for me. If you have such restrictions, let them know in advance if you can.

We highly recommend Canoe Bay for a peaceful yet playful couples retreat. For us, it was definitely worth the expense. We're hoping to return in fall and in the winter to enjoy the place in different seasons.

My husband and I spent 3 nights in October at the Canoe Bay Inn. Our luxury "cabin" was very much in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright and was quite comfortable. Our cabin had a large living room, deck overlooking the lake, and a large bedroom with a jacuzzi tub--very nice after a day of hiking. (There are many hiking trails around the property and we hiked them all!) The weather in October was not perfect--rain on 2 of the days--but the fall foliage was gorgeous. The Inn has a fabulous library, complete with fireplace, and is well-stocked with current books. We came for the fall colors, but I think that if we ever return, it would be in the summer when the weather is warmer, we could sit out on the deck of our cabin, and paddle on the lake in a canoe. The nearby town of Rice offers a few antique stores to browse through, but otherwise was disappointing. In terms of dining, we ate at the restaurant at the inn every night. All the diners are guests of the inn. There is only one set menu each night, but it was quite delicious and very gourmet. There are no comparable restaurants in the town of Chetek or other nearby towns. Our cabin was heated by a gas fireplace that is shared between the bedroom and livingroom. It is quite a nice touch, but our only complaint was that the gas flame was so bright during the night in the bedroom area that we ended up having to turn off the fireplace and, then, by morning, the cabin was rather chilly. Other than that, our stay was just wonderful and totally relaxing...a wonderful place to get away from the stresses of everyday life!
