Lovely - are you staying in the 'Mouse Hill'....

Review of The Victoria
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 29, 2024
We recently stayed at The Victoria in Holkham, and overall, we had a wonderful time. The accommodation was clean, and Room 9 (Mouse Hill) was lovely, though the view was a bit of a let down. While the room overlooks the beautiful countryside beyond the main road, you're also staring at the roof of a nearby building before you reach the picturesque cows. If you're not particular about views, the room is perfect, and it’s conveniently located just steps away from the bar and restaurant.

The staff were fantastic—friendly, welcoming, and genuinely interested in ensuring a great stay. The hotel is also very dog-friendly, and notably, there wasn’t any trace of the typical "dog smell" you sometimes encounter in pet-friendly places.

The breakfast menu was good, though I would have appreciated an alternative to the traditional fried breakfast, such as kippers. Unfortunately, both mornings, the black pudding and sausages were a bit overcooked, likely from sitting under the heat lamp too long. We didn’t dine at the hotel in the evening, so I can’t comment on the dinner service.

The estate and its grounds are absolutely beautiful and peaceful, with the beach just a short but scenic walk away. I highly recommend bringing proof of your stay at The Victoria, as it grants you free parking at the beach and discounts across the estate.

Despite the rooftop view and slightly overcooked breakfast, we had a fantastic time—100% yes, and my dog loved it too! Will we come back? Absolutely. The staff’s warmth and genuine care really made a difference.

While I’d love to give a 5/5 rating, the minor issues I mentioned make it difficult for me to do so. Still, I confidently recommend The Victoria to friends and family. It may be worth informing future guests about the room views, as that could be important to some, like myself.

Well done, Victoria—you won me over! :)

The Victoria, has found just that right balance of upmarket but not pretentious, the staff were all friendly and helpful, the suite we stayed in was spacious and well appointed, the free mini bar was a surprise as was the parking pass.
The location is excellent for those wanting to stretch their legs and enjoy the outdoors.
All the food was of a good quality with plenty of choice from local suppliers, my only slight reservation would be around animals, of course I acknowledge the dog friendly approach, however; I would have liked to see an area within the restaurant to accommodate those with allergies or non dog lovers (I'm sure there are some out there)
In summary if you want a break and to be spoilt a little bit, in a great North Norfolk location, you will need to go a long way to find better.

Room tip: Be aware this hotel is dog friendly.

First time in North Norfolk and staying at The Victoria as a solo with a small well-behaved Westie. Loved it all! I’d previously read a very favourable article on the hotel in The Weekend FT - a couple of years ago and was inspired to go. It’s heaven for dogs too!

The hotel is a charming old building. My room was spotless, quiet with a large walk-in shower. Nice complimentary room treats etc like delicious homemade shortcake biscuits, wine etc.

The hotel’s position close to the Holkham Hall estate (it’s part of it) is great for dog walking. And the beach is close by in the other direction. For me the peace and quiet and general beauty of that part of Norfolk made it for me. The view from the restaurant terrace was a particular favourite.

Hotel food was good to excellent over 4 nights. Staff pleasant and professional with above average service. If I had a slight criticism it was that the dessert menu didn’t seem to change over 4 days. Bit samey. Nice but could be a little more inspiring.

Overall I’d highly recommend staying in this lovely hotel - with or without a four-legged friend!

Room tip: If you have limited mobility and need a walk-in shower room 8 is perfect.

We had the most delightful stay at the Victoria Inn. The staff were so helpful and attentive. The ladies at Reception gave us sound recommendations on where to go and what to see. I was given a parking voucher to use at various car parks free of charge. The room and bathroom at the attic were spacious and wonderful. The hotel's location was great too - on one side was a lovely walk to the sea front and on the other to the beautiful Holkham estate and Holkham Hall. The breakfast was excellent in terms of quality and quantity (basically have as much as you want if it's included in your room rate). To top it all up, everything in the room's fridge (including two Processo bottles and a Rose bottle, all 200ml) were also included in the room rate, something I have not experienced in any other hotel.

My wife and I had an enjoyable weekend at a pop-up camp on the Holkham estate. We walked from Holkham to Wells during the day and on our return to Holkham we thought we'd pop in at The Victoria for a glass of wine and take a look at the menu. Our intention was to then try and book a table for dinner later.
On entering The Victoria, which was very quiet at 3pm, we encountered a member of staff who asked if she could help. We said we would just like some drinks. Her response was, in rather a snobby and pretentious manner "We don't do 'just drinks', we are a hotel and restaurant".
We were both taken by surprise by her response and the tone it was delivered, so we left feeling somewhat annoyed and patronised.
The last time I checked, and I have considerable experience, most hotels are happy for people to have a drink in their establishment.
Needless to say, we didn't return for a meal in the evening and we made other arrangements.

Before I wrote this review, I checked Tripadvisor for reviews. I found other people have had almost identical experiences. I also note, The Victoria has provided a concise and reasonable explanation to these reviews, as to why they 'don't do just drinks'.

The real issue here isn't that The Victoria 'doesn't do just drinks', it's about the abruptness and rudeness of its staff. Surely any professional establishment understands that a customer's experience (including potential customers) has an impact, not only the establishments reputation but also any future return custom
