“Not enjoyable”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 June 2005

The cabin wiring is faulty, breakers trip and often the cabin is without heat during the night and sinks are broken, rats inside the cabins smell of pungent urine whether dead or alive, the food is served in too small quantities, as many as 180 horses are shipped in three semi trucks the day before guests arrive, guests with little or no experience are looked down upon and treated less respect compared to others with riding skills, many wranglers are hung over or intoxicated while they ride, and the owners lose interest in the guests two days into the arriving week.

We do our utmost to take negative feedback to heart and make improvements to our operation but the experience of this guest seems out of sync with the experience that our guests normally have at our ranch. Many of the above comments are simply not true. Rather than taking our word for it, please take the time to read our other reviews on tripadvisor in order to make an informed decision about where to spend you’re hard earned vacation time.

I am happy to see this "dude ranch" on trip advisor so that I can express my displeasure in a public manner. Several years ago, my family of four stayed at the ranch only three of our planned seven days. The ranch advertises that it has over a hundred horses..but the owners are very intolerant of less experienced riders and insisted on limiting our choice of horses and activities. In fact, they asked us to skip scheduled activities and in essence, made us feel that they had no interest in treating us as "guests" who were on vacation but rather we felt like students who were being given detention for failing grades... It was upsetting to our family and confusing to our children. Anyone planning to stay here will be very satisfied if they are in the horse set "elite", but do not consider this ranch to be a "warm fuzzy" family dude ranch or a member of the "hospitality industry".

We are very sorry that the vacation at our ranch was a disappointment for this particular family. We do our utmost to make a visit to our ranch the vacation of a lifetime and it is very sad when we fall short. With a commitment to quality in mind we strive to improve and evolve every day. The many recent five star reviews on tripadvisor, from people of all ability levels, are a real testament to our success at getting better and responding positively to criticism. As many of our reviewers mention; if you are a horse lover, if you are interested in improving your riding ability, if you love riding through dramatic western scenery at an exhilarating (but safe) pace then you will love the Bitterroot Ranch. Before making any decision about where to spend you’re hard earned vacation time we ask you to look at more recent reviews of our ranch.

We do separate groups based on ability level, for the enjoyment and wellbeing of both horses and riders, but over the years we have worked to make the rides exciting and enjoyable for people of all riding levels. For those interested in improving as an equestrian our ranch is ideal. Ranch family member Hadley Fox’s lessons have enabled many riders to move up several ability levels during a week’s stay. As guests improve, we are happy to move them into more advanced groups and with 140 horses under saddle for an average 25 guests there is no dearth of mounts for more advanced riders. It is a great pleasure for us to see people improve their skills and their appreciation and enjoyment in horsemanship during a week’s stay. For us there is nothing better than watching novice riders or those with fear issues progress over the course of a week to the point that they have a solid riding foundation and even a new passion in life.
