I was very happy with my stay at the Manago Hotel. The room was exceptionally clean, which deserves top honors in such a humid environment. The room was also quite simple--there was a radio alarm clock, but no tv or phone in the room. I had a 2nd floor room, and the view was beautiful. Parking was adequate, although I did have to hunt for a spot when I returned around 10pm one night. The lock on the door was only a simple turn lock, not a deadbolt, but I didn't have any problems. During the day, I could hear people, but the place seemed to settle down in the late evening; I was never disturbed while sleeping. All the daytime Big Island activities must wear everyone out. The bathroom had a shower only.

I'd like to recommend the Manago to anyone on a budget or not. We stayed on the third floor and did not see any bugs in the room or bathroom. The room we received was very basic and spotless. Great view from the third floor. The owner is a bit quirky but he has a lot of good info on the areas nearby. Great snorkelling at Captain Cook Monument after a very strenuous 1.5 hour hike (one way). You can also rent a kayak (see guidebooks) to get there. We were supposed to stay only one night but ended up staying 3 nights.

We had a blast staying the the Manago Hotel! If you're adventurous and want to experience old Hawaii, and you don't mind a no frills environment, then this is the hotel for you.

We got a Japanese room, which you have to ask for, they don't automatically offer them when you call (at least not to people with southern accents!). We had the deluxe room, #315, for $70. It was on the 3rd floor with gorgeous views of the Pacific. The owners took great care in preparing this room, as they are Japanese also and wanted their fellow Japanese to feel at home. They have the tatami mat in the main area of the room, and a low mattress on the floor to sleep on. There were Japanese accents to the room, such as authentic furniture and knick-knacks. The bathroom was my favorite, as it featured both a furo tub and a shower. A furo tub is a deep hot tub... you sit in it Indian style, and you can fill water up to your neck. I loved it! Got a great soak!

We enjoyed both dinner and breakfast the next morning at the Manago. Make sure you eat here at least once! The restaurant is a local favorite, and has bargain prices!

We loved our stay here... the place was old, charming in its simple ways, and definitely an experience like none we'd find on the mainland.

This hotel is a diamond in the rough.

I read about this hotel in one well known guidebook which had a favorable review, and I read about this book in another well known guidebook and it had negative review. I realize that the opinion of this hotel depends on what type of room you select for your visit and your expectations of Hawaii.

The rooms were meticulously clean and well kept (even the carpeted stairways and hallways under the overhang are clean!). The accomodations are simple. Only a bed, desk, and two chairs occupy the room with a double bed that I stayed in. The bathroom is simple. No fancy soaps, but they do have soap available for you in a dispenser. Think Motel 6 but family owned and operated. There is no air conditioning, however the room I stayed in has a ceiling fan and a window with a screen. I slept with the window open and the fan on. It seems to be quite cool in Captain Cook compared with Kona and Honolulu so AC was not really needed anyway.

The hotel has two parking lots and two buildings. The main building is where the restaurant, lobby, and tv room are located. I stayed in the second building that overlooks the ocean.

The view from my 3rd floor lanai was amazing. There is nothing better than waking up to the ocean view in the morning. It gets a bit noisy at night because you can hear everyone else sitting on their lanai's in the evening, but it gets quiet by the time you want to sleep.

If you stay here, there are a few things you need to know before you book: 1) pay for a 3rd floor room with a private bath. It's worth it and it's the best value view for the price. Look at my pictures. You won't be able to find anything comprable anywhere else (around $60). 2) plan on eating at the hotel's restaurant at least once if you want the "local" experience. They have the BEST pork chops.

I discovered that many locals stay here from neighboring islands. If you want to be a tourist, then forget it. You should stay in Kona on Alii Drive and shop at all the ABC stores on every block. However, if you want to experience Hawaii as those who live there do, then staying at this quaint and charming Captain Cook hotel is a must for anyone desiring a relaxing time.

Take the Manago for what it is worth. If you want to see Hawaii and spend very little time in your room it works. If you find your R&R out exploring for the day and just need a place to sleep....... stay at the Manago. DO NOT spend time there during the day unless you want to really see where and who you are staying with. It turns out there are a number people that live there year round and have set-up camp and if you are lucky enough to be next door to someone who smokes you may find you need to pick-up a nicotine patch on your way back to airport. I would stay again but would pay a little extra for a room in the newer wing of the hotel just for the privacy. By the way even the oldest part of the hotel is super clean!!!!
