“Fabulous Value, Views and Hospitality”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 January 2012

We have stayed three times since January 2011 in Kona Bellevue's two of the three cottage suites. Each time it was a marvelous experience, especially due to warmth of Viviane's personality. Also the cottages are decorated tastefully with Hawaiian-French Provence's flair. The views of ocean and mountain depicted on her website are real and spectacular, especially when sun is reflecting off the ocean surf.. Occasionally one can see a hang glider floating down from the mountain to the plains near the ocean. Viviane has installed two bird feeders on her lawn where one can be entertained by the tropical birds descending for an undisturbed breakfast. I love to cook and Viviane has provided a well equipped kitchen that I can take advantage of the local produce and ocean fish and grass fed beef steaks. One can visit two Hawaiian historical places, which are managed by National Park Service and several State managed parks on the beaches and in the mountain. The volcano national park is only 85 miles from Bellevue. Bellevue offers the best value for the nightly rate and is located near several decent restaurants and supermarket.

Room: Orchid Suite at $90/night. A mouldy-smelling suite under the owner's house, with sliding glass doors to the ocean-view side of the house. You could not see the view from within the suite, and barely from the veranda. The suite was large, but the smell was so unpleasant that we didn't want to stay inside. The suite was not cleaned while we stayed, and there was a sign saying that if we didn't keep it clean we would be charged $50. The bed was very soft, and the quilt felt damp. It was also noisy at times - we could hear the family in the suite next door, or the owner's family above us. The suite was cold. We needed warm clothes for the evenings/mornings.

N.B. We did not see any mould, but we stayed one night at the Belle Vue Waimea and there was visible mould in the shower, along with used soap. (See photo.)

Breakfast: The fridge was stocked with a week's worth of yoghurt, homemade muffins, bran flakes, grocery store bread, milk, and a can of frozen orange juice. Vivienne gave us papaya and avocados from the property. I was hoping for local coffee, but this did not taste local.

Property: There are two basement-type suites (we were in one) and a detached cabin (Plumeria) on the property. Great view from out on the lawn. Bird feeding was fun to watch. Avocados were great.

Captain Cook Area: The weather was cool and rainy at the altitude of this B&B, though it was warmer and sunnier at the ocean near the Place of Refuge, a 15 minute highway drive away, where the snorkelling off the rocks was okay. If you drive 45 minutes to Kohala, it's significantly warmer, doesn't rain, and has great beaches. Challenging return trip hike to nearby Captain Cook monument, with excellent snorkelling. Local restaurants were reasonably good and well-priced, but most were not open for dinner. You need to use a car all the time, as the only walking is along a narrow highway/main road, and the ocean is too far to walk. Good grocery store near the B&B.

Liked best: Proximity to the challenging Captain Cook hike & good snorkeling, proximity to the Place of Reguge, Kona Coffeehouse & Cafe (which was inexpensive and good, though only open for breakfast and lunch), avocados from the property.

Liked least: Moldy smell; level of cleanliness; soft beds; rain and coolness of this Captain Cook microclimate. For the first time since using Trip Advisor, we were completely unprepared for how bad the room would be. (I see now there are two poor reviews, and they are accurate for our suite, but they were swamped with the number of good reviews which are probably for Plumeria.)

Room Tip: The Orchid suite is like a basement suite that opens to the outdoors, and smells mouldy. The Rose Su...

My wife and I spent the last 5 days of 2011 at the Belle Vue and thought we were in Heaven. We stayed in the Plumeria Suite. It was delightful. The cooking facilities wer good and the refrigerator was well stocked with delicions continental breakfast items including fresh off the tree fruit. We really liked fixing our own breakfasts on our schedule and also fixed three picnic lunches and one dinner in the room. The room was very comfortable, including the large bed. The Suite also had a fabulons large balcony with a breakfast table and two lounge chairs and the most spectacular view down the hill over the lush greenery and out to the expansive Kona coast. We found several very good restraunts and enjoyed kayacking, snorkling, and swimming with the dolphins. It was indeed a fabulous vacation.

Room Tip: The Plumeria Suite was excellant!

Viviane was a wonderful host. We were lucky enough to have a great rate and the private "honeymoon" plumeria cottage. Our fridge was stocked...so much so that when we arrived hungry for dinner we opted to eat fresh avocado sandwiches from their farm. We were amazed at the view from our lanai as well as the gardens on this property. It was the perfect accomodation for the end of our trip and feel so lucky to have been referred by our friends. I would highly recommend this for a peaceful stay close to the city of refuge as well as kayaking with the dolphins. We used the BBQ and laundry facilities - all was great.

Room Tip: Plumeria cottage was really charming - loved the kitchen area and our own bbq

Belle Vue was a real find. We stayed in the Rose Room, which has a fantastic view out the sliding-doors right over Kealakekua Bay. It was very private and clean, overlooking beautiful property with gardens and dozens of birds. Vivian, the host was terrific, giving us suggestions of things to do (snorkeling at Place of Refuge, Kayaking from Kealakekua to the Captain Cook memorial and swimming with dolphins) and places to eat (Mi's has fantastic Italian and fresh pasta). In the evening we relaxed on the lawn chairs and watched the incredible sunset over the ocean. There's no better vacation.

This was our second visit, and it was better than the last. The views are still amazing, and this time we got to do a bit of stargazing -- perfect from the lawn, with chairs that can be adjusted so we can look straight up. Vivianne provides blankets that fit over the chairs.

The birds were wonderful and colorful in the morning; the avacados and (I think) the bananas were as local as you can get (from the grounds).

It's a little hidden, and down a steeeeeep hill, but that provides a great sense of privacy.

Yes, it's away from the resort areas. But that means you can interact with the locals as they are, as regular people. It's a wonderful way to feel a connection with the place.

My wife and I just got back from an Hawaiian vacation during which we spent the final three days at the Belle Vue Kona B&B in Captain Cook, on the Big Island. It was wonderful! Clean, beautiful view, we were made to feel really welcomed and they gave us plenty of suggestions on how to make the most out of the limited time we had there. You definitely will not go wrong staying at the Belle Vue. And if you do, be sure to drive down the side of the mountain/hill to the Kona Pacific Farmers Cooperative for the BEST Kona Coffee in the Islands. Believe me, not all Kona Coffee is the same, and this place has the best of the 30+ coffee farmers in the cooperative. When we go back to the Big Island we will definitely stay again at the Belle Vue!

Room Tip: All the rooms have the same view. It looks just like the photos on their website!
