We like to find B &B's or small inns close to popular outdoor spots but not in the middle of busy downtowns. So this was perfect 75 miles from Volcano but close to beaches, state parks and hiking around Kona. Ken and Erin were gracious hosts and made wonderful breakfasts with fruit, eggs, pancakes, scones, etc. There packet of information was excellent. The pool and hot tub and grill area was a bonus.

We had a wonderful 5 night stay here during Christmas time. We were looking forward to a relaxing, unstressful vacation and our friends recommended this place. It was just what we were looking for, only a 20-30 min drive from Kona, but a quiet, non-touristy spot. The beds are very comfortable and the suite (Alihi Lani) was not like a hotel room, but a home away from home. The hosts are very nice and they were very nice to give us suggestions on what places to visit and where when we asked. They also provide a very helpful info package before your stay and there is a info package in the room too. And the home made breakfast was really yummy (different options every day). I loved not hearing the sound of the traffic and partying during the night, but waking up to the birds singing. A perfect island getaway.

The place is close to Two Steps, a very good snorkeling place also for a beginner. Also not too far from some other great places to visit. They do rent snorkeling equipment for a very reasonable rate, so don't bother buying your own (if you do not already have one).

I will definitely recommend this place to friends and family.

The Luana Inn is a wonderful place to stay. The hosts are great, the rooms and amenities are splendid, and the location is superb. The view from the lanai is lovely. There is a great pool, hot tub, and facilities for BBQ. There are even body boards, coolers, and other items available for use. The beds are very comfortable.

We had four nights recently at the Luana Inn. It was a lovely place to stay. Quiet with beautiful tropical gardens and lovely views overlooking the swimming pool. Erin and Ken are wonderful hosts and cannot do enough for you to make everything pleasant. The breakfast each morning was different and delicious.

Room Tip: Rooms close to the main house have lovely views.

We arrived mid morning to drop our cases off before going on a snorkel trip. We were surprised to find several millipedes crawling across our room but Ken advised it had not been cleaned so we assumed it would be OK when we returned.

When we did get back, the doors had been left wide open and there were millipedes everywhere inside and outside the room. We discussed the issue with Ken and decided that we were uncomfortable and wanted to leave - Ken kindly did not charge us for the cancellation.

Neither of us are particularly squeamish about bugs but we'd never seen anything like this and it is the first time we have ever walked out of booked accommodation!

In general, we also didn't find Ken that welcoming and the pool/jacuzzi area all seemed a bit run down. We're really confused at how the Luana Inn has so many four and five star reviews.

This is our family business and we are completely dedicated to providing a five star experience. We love sharing our home and our island, and we want every guest who comes to us to love it, too. We’re sincerely sorry this was not this guest’s experience. In fact, we feel terrible. We apologized to this guest, let them go without question, found them other accommodations, and didn’t charge them for a single night, which is our policy if ever we have someone for whom we are not the right fit. Guests come first for us, and always have. We will share our written apology here.

Please let us offer you our sincerest apology for your negative experience at Luana Inn. We take such criticism very seriously and are always trying to improve. We love sharing our home and our island, and we want every guest who comes to us to love it, too. We’re sincerely sorry this was not your experience.

The day you checked in we purposely left the doors open because it was a particularly hot, sunny afternoon and we wanted the room to be cool upon your return. In retrospect, we probably should have closed the room up and left the air conditioner on for you instead, but we were not expecting the high concentration of millipedes that followed. Millipedes normally stay in the soil but mysteriously appear in late summer/early fall and seem compelled to come inside. They are around for a few weeks and then disappear again until the next year. They like moist vegetation and seem to come out on hotter, drier days, perhaps seeking water. The day you arrived was 32 C which is unusual. It normally doesn’t exceed 28-30. The night you left there were dozens on the exterior wall next to your room and on the driveway, but we want to stress that this is a highly unusual event that we could not predict. We have a sunny, bright, open property and very few pests normally. Since you left, we have tracked the millipede population around the cottage every day and night, with doors open and closed, and have not seen those numbers again. With the doors closed, we have not had more than one or two enter your room overnight, and we’ve had several nights without any appearing on the exterior wall. We have done this tracking in order to determine what action we need to take to prevent a repeat of your experience. We do maintain a pesticide border around our homes (which we refreshed after you left) and we are meticulous in our cleaning, but unfortunately there is no method that is 100% successful in a tropical environment and the millipedes seem strangely immune to pesticides.

The weekend before your arrival, we had taken a rare opportunity to take our children for a two night camping trip on the other side of the island. It was the end of their fall break and we were unoccupied. The trip was wonderful, but when we came back we found that one of the pool pumps had failed, and we had a lot of algae and detritus to deal with. We immediately ordered a new pump, which has since arrived. The pool is now on its way to recovery, after several days of shock treatments and vigorous scrubbing by hand. The day you arrived we had swept, cleaned, and scrubbed as we do daily, but unfortunately the painstaking process of hand scrubbing the pool just doesn’t have the same result as the automatic vacuum. The hot tub has been suffering from several mechanical faults as well, and needs a complete rebuild, which we are busily trying to fit into our overall schedule. Please be assured we are working as fast as a two person business can. We are painfully aware whenever our amenities are not up to our standards.

Finally, we’d like to apologize for you not feeling 100% welcomed to our place. This is never acceptable. We have worked very hard for ten years to provide a place that feels like home for our guests. Thank you for your feedback, and please accept our sincerest apologies. Our guests’ comfort is our first priority, and we do everything within our power to ensure our guests love their experience here. We are so committed to this, and believe in our business so strongly, that we will continue to work each and every day to improve.
