“Fantastic Accomodations”

If you are going to stay in the Hilo area and you enjoy preparing some or all of your own meals, you would have to be crazy not to put Lopaka's Family Lodge at the top of your list. The livingroom, kitchen, bedroom and bath are spotless. The kitchen is very well appointed, and the views from the lanai are sweeping. You are only a few minute's drive away from the coast highway, either north or south, and the route to the Saddle Road is even closer. The problem with writing a review like this is that Bev, the owner, is going to be so full that we will never have a chance to rent again. But she deserves mucho praise for this place. I would return in a heartbeat.

“Everything you need”
Reviewed December 18, 2011 for a stay in December 2011

From the moment we made contact with Bev (the owner), she was courteous and prompt with everything. She was waiting for us when we arrived, and allowed us to check out late because our flight left at 10 pm. She even called my cell one day to let us know that the lava was going into the ocean again, and that we might enjoy seeing it.

The apartment itself is a separate building on the property, connected to the main house through a covered deck, but it's completely separate otherwise. It's a very nicely appointed place, with a relatively large master bed, separate bathroom (shower only), wash room, and living/dining/kitchen area. The lanai is also very nice.

You'll be really happy to discover that Lopaka's really does have everything that you need. In the kitchen you'll find lots of kitchen utensils, a dishwasher, full stove, fridge and sink, drawers full of useful items. There's a modern TV in the living room with the roll away bed, lots of extra blankets (it's comfortable, but not hot there in December) and pillows. There are books, guides, and even a Hawaiian dictionary to keep you occupied. The dining area has comfortable seating for 4 around the table. The wash room contains a real washer and a dryer. The bathroom comes fully stocked with soap, shampoo, extra towels. The bedroom has a double bed and a large closest. One of the cuter (and helpful) things is that every light switch has a little label on it that indicates what light it's for.

In short, Lopaka's is like staying in a good 4 star hotel, or even a 5, without the obsequious service. As you look around, you'll discover that there are a lot of extras and pluses that show how much thought has gone into making sure that your stay is as nice and worry-free as possible. We stayed there because we thought it'd make a good base for seeing the entire island, and we didn't really enjoy the resorts on the west side. We think we made a good choice.

“A Perfect Home Away From Home”
Reviewed February 5, 2011 for a stay in January 2011

Lopaka's Lodge was the perfect home away from home for our month in Hilo. The hale and Bev herself outdid all of our highest expectations. We cooked many meals in the fully-equipped kitchen; we spent many hours enjoying the view and the breezes from our private lanai; we even had fresh-squeezed juice from the oranges in the tree in the yard. The house is in a quiet neighborhood in the slopes above Hilo and served as the ideal base camp for trips to the best places on the island: Volcano National Park, Waipi'o Valley, Mauna Kea, and, of course, Hilo itself. Bev herself is fantastic and thinks of everything; she made our stay here as good as it could be.
