We stayed at the Dophin Bay Hotel for four nights in a one bedroom apartment. Although rather dated in appearence the beds were so comfortable and a great shower with lots of hot strong water. Also a really good internet connection, great after the struggles we had in Honolulu. Why is it that cheap hotels have good free internet and expensive places charge and don't have good connectivity. The kitchen was adequate for our needs and we indulged in so many of the free papayas and bananas from the rear garden. John (the owner/manager?) was so helpful and we used his recommendations for places to eat and also his advice about seeing the lava fields. The hotel is located only a short walk from downtown, but as it rains a lot in Hilo make sure that you borrow an umbrella or take your car. Ask John about what you are interested in doing and seeing, we found his advice invaluable. Hilo is not a glamourous town and the Dolphin Bay Hotel is not a glamourous hotel, go to Kona if you want luxury, but we thought that it was very good value and had a wonderful stay. And don't worry about the frogs chorus, you are in the tropics, it is a comforting lullaby to send you to sleep.

Room Tip: Ask John or a staff member any question and trust their advice.

This is the place to stay if you are staying in Hilo affordable, clean & quiet. There is a kitchenette if needed and the walk to town is short if you prefer to go out. Huge bathroom with a great shower. Owners were friendly, helpful & knowledgeable. We had a little trouble finding the hotel because it is on a quiet neighborhood street but well worth a couple of wrong turns. Would definitely stay here again.

Stayed here 2 separate nights. Units, especially the 1BR were very large, kitchen basic but more than adequate. Staff very friendly and helpful. Not sure what the competition is like, but would definitely stay here again.

Lovingly maintained two-story, 60s-style hotel. Super clean. Sweet tropical courtyard. Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice vibe. Tasty fruit and coffee. Towels are changed daily, which is nice in this climate, since things dry slowly. Kitchen is equipped with the basics. If you're there on a Saturday, go to the farmers market for provisions. Earplugs are provided in case you're bothered by the sound of the geckos, frogs, or rain -- although we found all three quite soothing.
Our room (#10) did not have a lanai, but it was still very pleasant, bright, and airy, with lots of windows.

There is something to say about a place that makes fresh banana bread and/or muffins for morning breakfast. This is a great hotel albeit very basic - then again, that is all you need in Hilo, HI. You are stupid if you go to Hilo and stay at your hotel. My wife and I used this hotel essentially as a place to crash while visiting Volcanoes National Park and the sight-seeing on the Hilo side of the island. Understand that if you want a resort type feel, this is NOT the place to go, and for that matter, not the island to visit as well. Coffee was fantastic every morning, as well as the pastries offered and fresh fruit from their onsite garden. Do beware that there are bugs at this hotel - just a part of life near the rainforest, I guess. The hotel cat, Rebel, is a sweetheart and will come to your door asking for a snack. Let him in for a visit if you like cats, or like us, missed our cats back home.

The reason I gave this hotel a very good instead of excellent? Two reasons: No smoke detector in the room and the bathroom could have used a better cleaning. I realize most people would think that the lack of a smoke detector isn't a big deal, but I know it is against the law and a very poor oversight on management's part.

This is a well managed hotel that lived up to the reviews that we read prior to booking our stay. What more could one hope for when planning a vacation of a lifetime. Service was great from booking emails to check out. The best thing that I can say is that we look forward to staying there again if we ever get back to the Big Island.

It is on residential street across river from downtown, and with only two stories,is perfect place to stay and have quiet rest at night. The chirping frogs at night actually very soothing when they are active. The kitchens in rooms make it great for anyone wanting to make some meals.Very friendly staff, and was my second year in a row there.Little walkable pathway behind it with tropical plants, trees, and flowers. Stayed at B@B beforehand one night,as i had waited too long in reserving here for two nights like last year, and only one night was available.
