We were traveling through a lovely small town up in the ranch country of the Big Island and were hungry for a steak dinner after eating seafood the first ten days of our vacation. A local person suggested The Broiler and we were not dissapointed. In fact the steak was great and perfectly cooked as one might expect but what surprised us was the quality of the seafood. Try the Ahi Tuna Tower as an appetizer which was so creatively presented and delicious you might just order two. Next we tried the surf, turf and bird special which was a huge amount of food and the fried calamari which was excellent. The burgers are also made to order so you can design your own and my friend who was traveling with us said it was awesome. One cool hint is we were lucky to go on Tuesday night where young kids eat free so if you are traveling with the young ones this will be a very cost effective option on a Tuesday night.

We found this to be a very good choice if you are looking for a steak dinner on the big island. The service was friendly and prompt. Their Caesar salad was fantastic. The steaks were good although a little thinner than we're used to. It wasn't very busy either of the 2 times we went. Atmosphere is casual/cowboy. The food was consistent both times. It was raining in Waimea both times we were there and they had a fire in the fireplace.

While touring the Big Island of Hawaii, we were looking for a great place to eat and unfortunately our GPA let us down as far as opportunities for sit-down fare. A quick search on the trusty cell phone led to a place called Broilers in the Parker Ranch Center shopping mall. After finding the place (their sign is hidden under the main Parker Store sign) we went in only to find that the restaurant was closed (we missed lunch and were too early for diner). The lounge was open so we went in and asked if there was any food available through the lounge. As it turned out the person we asked happened to be the cook who offered to seat us and offered the entire lunch and appetizer menu. We were seated (in the lounge) and the waitress was happy to serve us, and explain the menu options, specials of the day (a fresh catch fish and a center cut sirloin). While waiting the owner of the place came by and chatted with us, asking us where we were from, and making us feel at home, not an inconvenience. Even as were were unexpected guests, the food was outstanding, the steak prepared to order, the catch of the day was grilled to perfection and the crunchy, deep fried calamari was perfect. While we would go back just because of the kindness shown us on this day we will surely go back due to the great food and service.

The entrance to this restaurant really raised our expectations after a long day of driving. What followed was a real let down. Inside the atmosphere was really lacking. Service was friendly but slow, even though the place was mostly empty. The food was not what we expected. Instead of ranch like proportions, my steak was small, raw and tasteless, as was my wife's fish. The deserts, which we normally don't order but did on this night because we were still hungry, were quite good and kept me from rating this as a one star

We debated over whether to try this place, or Merrimen's. Merrimen's seemed a little pricy especially for us being in our hiking clothes and 'jeep hair'. We asked a few locals on the way in and I sensed that they were holding back. Trust me, I wish they had been more forthcoming. The steaks were awful, my daughter's baked potato was as hard as a rock and what they passed off as barbeque sauce for my ribs was really just boiled down ketchup. The waitress was more than pleasant and patient with us, although she could have tried a bit harder. Granted we got there at 9:00 on a weeknight, but my opinion is that if you're not adjusting the prices, why should we have to adjust our expectations? This is the new low that we'll judge other meals against.
