Staying here was an event unto itself. The beauty and serenity of this tropical paradise coupled with the charm of Pahoa and the graciousness of Petra and Shawna delivered an experience- not just a place to stay. The breakfasts were incredible- with each bite you could feel the hugs of 1000 Hawaiian grandmothers! The papayan pancakes were worth the price of the plane ticket alone. My Significant Other and I stayed for 9 nights in the studio and felt it met our needs. Having access to the grounds allowed for a comfortable extended stay while staying in the studio.

As a bonus - you get the insightful concierge service of Petra and the delightful community of the other guests.

I never hugged an innkeeper before I stayed here.

We arrived to find a personal note welcoming my wife and me to Hale Mona B & B. Upon entering our "Garden Room," we found a spacious living room with TV, library collection of good reads, and an adjoining full kitchen with dining table and complete cooking and kitchen supplies. There was a separate bedroom and bath room, and all were spotlessly clean. Beautiful gardens surrounded the buildings, and we enjoined superb breakfasts each morning with our congenial hosts and other guests. This was a full breakfast that included fresh fruit, muffins, toast, eggs, breakfast meats, and a variety of teas and Hawaii coffee. We were directed to local restaurants and attractions, and truly enjoyed our stay. We thank Petra, the inn owner, for her attention to us and for helping us enjoy the "Big Island."

This was our second stay at the Hale Moana. This time Petra graciously upgraded us to the very comfortable Garden Suite. The B&B is surrounded by gorgeous gardens filled with native plants. It's a great location for exploring the Pahoa area and is an easy drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Room Tip: Garden Suite is my favorite

Loved our stay with Petra and her family. Beautiful grounds and wonderful location for getting to all sorts of things on that side of the island. Close to Hilo, Volcano NP, Lava flows, beach and snorkeling. They all make great recommendations and know the island well. Our room was quiet and delightful, perfect for the two of us. Breakfast was yummy with fresh island fruit, granola and baked French toast. One of our favorite places on the island. Thanks for a lovely stay and chatting with us to learn more of the history of the island!

We suddenly needed a place to stay for a few nights on the weekend, and panicked to find the entire city of Hilo and surrounding area was entirely booked! By miracle, we found this B&B through Expedia, and was so blessed to find it had availability in the Lanai Suite! While very close to Hilo, the Volcanoes, and other must-see places, it was thankfully tucked into a quiet neighborhood. The nights are quiet with only the sound of frogs to lul you to sleep, and a perfect breeze from the open windows. The morning wakens you with a neighborhood rooster that thankfully knows better than to continue too long. Our suite on the second floor had a nice skinny balcony to sit-on in the morning and enjoy coffee with the morning sun, curious geckos, and Petra's adorable and friendly cat Leo. The grounds botanical gardens are beautiful, expansive, well cared-for, and we were not woken-up by noisy lawn maintenance! The breakfast she provided all B&B guests at a reasonable hour was on a lovely enclosed porch, and had all familiar foods and was well prepared with care and consideration to food sensitivity! I would recommend this place to travelers without young children, couples looking for a quiet honeymoon, or adults searching for relaxation and peace. Its a good secret to know about this place and share with only a select few who can appreciate it. This B&B experience sincerely showed us Hawaiian courtesy and ended our family vacation in true Aloha pleasure! We will for sure be back and definitely recommend it to others!
