Crater Rim Cabin was a complete pleasure to stay in. Barry and Jim really go out of their way. Everything was so clean, tidy, well thought-out and welcoming. There were so many small details:

- A sign outside welcoming us by name and a carport to park our van in;

- Tons of local information (guides, pamphlets, books, etc), some music, videos, little toys.

- There are two big fans and an air humidifier.

- Bedroom: a king bed (semi-firm), armoire, tv/dvd player with some vids and music, alarm clock, chair, bedside tables, more books, lots of pillows and blankets, including a warming blanket, a small deck and stairs off the door, and a view to the glow coming off of Kilauea (we couldn't believe it at first!).

- Kitchen: there were little cereal boxes, a dozen fresh eggs, coffee, bread, juice and other goodies, a full stove with oven, full size fridge with freezer, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, and all the trimmings, towels between the pots and pans, and other thoughtful touches;

- Bathroom: plenty of towels and products, a lovely window-as-mirror, pocket door, standing shower, bench;

- Living room: a fold-down bed/couch, an electric wood stove, two lounge chairs, a table with 4 chairs, lots to read, blankets, lovely windows and pleasant lighting;

There are big umbrellas and beach mats for use in the main room closet), but no beach towels, so maybe bring one of those.

The surrounding garden was simply lovely, and i found it fairly easy to crutch around. It's right next to a great big (and marked by chairs) drop-off so be careful!

i wish we'd taken more pics of the inside, but it's exactly as shown in the tripadvisor page.

Overall this cabin was an amazing gem in the middle of the park.

Regarding accessibility, this gets a bit long. There weren't enough options around accessibility in the tripadvisor survey (only if it's w/c accessible or not), so i wrote that it was wheelchair accessible so that folks who need some access things don’t discount it, but definitely want to give more specifics because it'll only work for some folks. i wish i'd taken some measurements like i do basically everywhere i go lol, but i can answer questions and hopefully this is helpful:

- There's a wide ramp to the main door making it possible to get into the cabin in my 48"L x 24”W mobility scooter. i parked it in front of the closet as you just come in so i could charge over night. i used my forearm crutches inside and found it easy to move through the space because everything is on the same floor, it’s a relatively small space, the hardwood flooring is the same throughout, and all the doors are wide.

- The kitchen is wide enough to accommodate someone going in and out in a wheelchair, but is otherwise *not* adapted for wheelchair user use, and there are some things placed high up.

- The bathroom will be an issue for some people because while there's a wide pocket door, there's a raised shower box beside the toilet and the sink is in front of the toilet, so there isn't enough space to transfer; but if you're able to ambulate it might work. Open the pocket door, on the left is a cabinet with towels etc; on the right is a sink (no cabinet, and is clear underneath, but has two support pipes on the front corners of the sink to the floor); across from the sink there's a bench; straight ahead is the toilet and on its left is the shower. i found the door a bit tricky to use because it's a little heavy and there's no pull-out lever you can grab to close it.

- There had been A LOT of scented products used in the cabin for cleaning and ambience (candles, cleaners, etc). i found it initially overwhelming, but we bagged and removed all of the various products, and had the fans going constantly and windows open, which helped a lot (PS there were ZERO mosquitos here!). i did it with the first place we stayed earlier in our trip but completely forgot to ask the CRC folks to please not use anything, but feel confident they would have accommodated. Just be aware that because of the general use of these products long term, this is definitely not a scent-free cabin.

- There’s good wifi access, lots of different kinds of lighting (NO fluorescents), and windows (with curtains) everywhere.

- The lounging chairs are sturdy and wide, though low to the ground.
Again, the cabin is exactly as the photos on tripadvisor show.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review of our cabin! It always makes us happy to know that our guests thoroughly enjoy their stay with us. Your detailed comments are much appreciated!

We do encourage potential guests to contact us before booking if they have any special needs or questions about the accommodations. When requested in advance, we are happy to reduce/minimize/eliminate the use of scented products. It is difficult to find effective cleaning/disinfecting agents that leave no scent at all, but we will do the best we can! (Beach towels are available on request.)

Again, thanks for the great review!

Crater Rim Cabin offers a unique style of lodging that worked perfectly for what we were looking for: close to the park, private, comfortable, and unique. We spent three nights there during a cold, rainy spell, but the stove and electric blanket kept us cozy. The cabin itself is the perfect size for a couple and has so many amenities like a good-sized kitchen, fully stocked for breakfast, excellent bathroom with plenty of towels and supplies, and lots of helpful books and brochures to assist with your planning. We were impressed with the cleanliness of the cabin; Barry was the most congenial host and takes such pride in making sure his guests are well looked-after. I was really taken with the Nene Tutu items that I saw and took advantage of the discount for guests - so adorable and very well made - so ask Barry to set up a time to go shopping in the warehouse!

Thank you for your lovely review. We hope that Ma Nature is a little nicer on your next visit!
Yes, we have hand made the Tutu Nene® line of products since 1992. Many folks like them and are pleased to be able to purchase "Made in Hawaii" gifts right here at the cabin.
Again, thanks for your kind words!

We had three wonderful nights at Crater Rim Cabin. The cabin is very quaint and located in a perfect setting near Volcanoes National Park (we could see the glow of Kilauea from our bed at night). The hosts are charming and very welcoming. The place was EXTREMELY clean and well appointed. The Park is amazing, with numerous sights deserving of at least one or two full days.

Volcano has many really fun, different and exciting lodgings, yet this one does stand out for so many reasons. Just one cabin, really big garden completely with volcanic rift and sink holes, fabulous forest and flowers. Great big bed, hot water and gas fireplace complete the ideal. This is how a vacation rental should be in your dreams. And its so close, less than 5 min from the national park gate and Volcano village with art and food fun. Of course the cabin is stocked with so much food and amenities, you might be tempted to stay in! Easy to find and the pictures shown are absolutely true to what you will experience. Friendly, engaged hosts. You can call them and book direct. Yes, yes and more yes to the hosts.

We stayed at the cabin for 2 nights early January 2018 and we enjoyed the place very very much.
Jim and Barry are amazing host. They had the cabin ready with fruits, bread, honey, jam and coffee. They provide recommandation for food, visits and hikes in volcano which were all very helpful.
The cabin itself is beautiful and very comfortable even when the temperature dropped to the 50s outside.
On our next trip to the big island, we will stay there again for sure. Highly recommended.

We are so happy that you enjoyed staying with us! Yes, we do have chilly weather at times, especially the winter months. The cabin is at just over 4000 feet elevation. Our propane fireplace and electric blankets keep you cozy on these chilly mornings. Hope you will come stay with us again in the near future!
