“lovely volcano hideaway”
Reviewed 5 November 2014 for a stay in October 2014

We stayed in the volcano cottage for three nights at the end of october. It was such a calming time. it was quiet, except for the birds and the rain. it was so close to the national park (and with the week pass, we could go everyday.) it was close to the village where we went for dinner. the propane fire place in the living room was so cozy at night. the detailed binders tell where to eat, what trails to go on, how to work the shower, etc.

If you are looking for a home base for your adventures on the east side of the big island, i definitely recommend this cottage!

Staying in a cozy volcano mountain haven is IT! Everything and more than one person could ever ask for. Peace and serenity, adventures into the night to stroll with the Night Marchers as they parade around the rim of Pele's FIRE. Walking amidst delighted birds calling to one another as they hide in the a'a li'i and ohia. The magic created from the blend of mist and sunlight.... the beautiful forest plants and lovely lovely trees. One day I will return ... mark my words! In the meantime I am in deep gratitude for the experience which lives on now only in memory.

“Volcano Haven - the perfect complement to Pele's evershifting scenery”

It’s mid afternoon and after a thirty minute drive from Hilo I’ve just reached Volcano, Hawaii. Specifically I’ve just parked in the carport of Volcano Haven, a cottage rented by Richard and Candice to people who want to explore the many facets of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park or just want a few days to relax in the rainforest. As soon as I close the gate and enter the yard a cardinal announces my arrival. A waft of ginger follows me as I walk a path lined with antheriums, orchids and ferns towards the cottage. Up the short flight of stairs and as the door opens I’m greeted in the foyer to an arrangement of flowers in a bright sunlit room. Two steps to my left is another flower arrangement on the dining room table with a box of chocolate covered macnuts waiting for me (nothing says welcome better than chocolate).

On one side of this room is the kitchen. Equipped with all the necessary culinary tools, everything an aspiring master chef can concoct can be found here. On the other side of the room is the living room. A cozy love seat situated just across from a fireplace with a perfect view of the rainforest in between. On all sides are large windows lighting the hues of the natural wood in the high vaulted ceiling.

A few steps to the right of the door lay the bedroom. Here in the middle of the room I find a queen bed (just the right firmness) framed with a nightstand and lamp sitting on each side while off in one corner is a small desk. When I discover a flashlight in the nightstand I come to realize there are two things that make this home extraordinary. The first is that no matter what room I am in there are large windows letting in streams of sunshine. It gives the home s-p-a-c-e bringing the outside inside. In this case the ‘outside’ is an exquisite garden of ferns and tropical foliage spread under a canopy of ohia trees. Even at night the strategically placed lights in the garden highlight the natural beauty of the setting. This is an example of the second thing I find wonderful about Volcano Haven. There are so many thoughtful details that have been considered to highlight a guest’s stay. A large collection of guidebooks focusing on the volcanoes of Hawaii, a basil plant growing in the kitchen, locally produced Big Island coffee beans next to the coffee grinder, tropical plant arrangements in every room, a pair of leather gloves for those daring to get up close and personal with lava, a heart shaped lava rock sitting on the window sill and a crystal on another, a towel drying rack, slippers, candles for when the romantic mood strikes, fireplace heaters…the list goes on….all coming together in a peaceful haven.

“Secluded Wonderful Getaway”
Reviewed 14 May 2014 for a stay in May 2014

In a word: charming. If you enjoy quiet, secluded locations surrounded by a riot of lovely plant and bird life, where you can't see your neighbors, then go here.
This place is well appointed and comfortable. The owners are thoughtful and provide some basics in the kitchen (including their own delightful honey), and many little things to make your stay great in the area.
They are also very responsive and provide immediate attention to any problem (the propane ran out while we were there and someone was by to replace it in less than 30 min).
I would absolutely recommend it and return.

“We instantly fell in love with Volcano Mountain Haven”

I have selected accommodations many times on the internet and have put a lot of time and energy into the research. There's always a concern that the choice will live up to it's description. Volcano Mountain Haven not only lived up to it's description, but for the first time it surpassed all of my expectations. It is the perfect place for a retreat -private, quiet, beautiful surroundings inside and out, uncluttered but elegantly laid out with big windows that bring the outside in - even after dark you could turn on the garden lights and enjoy the beautiful garden. We never wanted to use any of the available window coverings - we wanted to be immersed in our tropical forest setting. The owners have thought of everything! There wasn't a single thing lacking - essentials for the kitchen including their delicious homemade honey, umbrellas, local guides, fresh flower arrangements from the garden throughout, zip lock bags, ad infinitum. The proximity to Volcano National Park couldn't have been better, and provided good access to the entire Big Island for daily activities. The touristy flavor of Hawaii could be reached but also left behind. The only problem was that we did not give ourselves enough time to do the tourist and adventure things and get to spend time in this special retreat. As we would take off in the morning, we longed to stay put and relax in this peaceful retreat. We will be back, and next time we will make sure we have enough days to do this!

“Wonderful stay!”
Reviewed 25 January 2014 for a stay in January 2014

Volcano Mountain Haven was a wonderful place to wake up at and spend our evenings after our long days of exploring. The songs of the birds in the mornings was wonderful! Everything you need to feel right at home. The Volcanos National Park is a wonderful park to explore and this accommodation is right near the entrance also. Candice and Richard are wonderful as well. Couldn't recommend this place enough!

Management Response
25 Jan 2014
Brittany & Kyle are the most adventurous guests we have met. They were out early morning exploring until late in the evening. We didn't think they have much time to enjoy the cottage! We were glad that they enjoyed the cottage and appreciate the Hawaiian native song birds's songs. Waking up to lovely songs of birds is also one of our favorite.
