We spent two nights in the Artist's Cottage in mid-February. Garrett was a fine host and, as many others have reported, went out of his way to provide spot-on advice that allowed us to make the most of our visit to the national park -- the entrance to which is just a couple of miles down the road. The grounds are a tropical splendor, full of twittering birds, curling vines and dripping vegetation (we had a lot of rain).
The Artist's Cottage was spacious and worked very well for our family of four, though it was a bit on the drab and dated side. We didn't come expecting romantic frou-frou or a fussy B&B-type atmosphere, but there was nothing particularly appealing or welcoming about the hodge podge of furnishings and the lackluster decor. It was all basic and serviceable, but could seem a touch depressing.
Breakfast is the same every morning: fresh-baked banana, zucchini (or similar) bread, eggs you can boil or scramble yourself, some packets of instant oatmeal, and a plate of papaya and bananas. It was fine for us for the 2 days were were there, but had we stayed a third, I would have started feeling bored with the offerings. I would have REALLY appreciated a few additional touches: some half and half for the coffee, a couple of boxes of cereal, fewer bananas and other more interesting fruits...
But these are quibbles. Volcano Country Cottages is in a great location, with friendly hosts, and offers an affordable base for exploring the Hilo side of the island.
