The Bay Club at Waikoloa Beach Resort
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 20 December 2012

We used a RCI timeshare exchange to book a 2 bedroom suite at The Bay Club for a week. The unit is huge!!! We love the full kitchen, walk-in closet, two bedrooms with huge separate bathrooms and the pull-out couch. The unit is fully stocked with dishes, plates, forks, spoons, and knives and has two sets of the basic starter toiletries you'd expect from a hotel (soap, lotion, shampoo) as well as a small dishwashing liquid and one packet of laundry detergent. There were also extra sheets in the closet for the pull-out sofa bed. It is also nice having a small washer and dryer in the unit. It is very quiet on the bottom floor of building 2, so that is great. It is also very easy to find parking (which is free). Our key cards never work in opening the gates, though, so we have had to call the front desk every single time we want to enter the parking lot, but that is only a very minor inconvenience. The other drawback is that housekeeping only comes once a week, so you are responsible for keeping your unit clean in the meantime. Staff seems friendly enough but you will get the sales pitch for the timeshare if you aren't already an owner.

The food selection at the cafe is limited and the service is s-l-o-w, but the portions are generous and the food tastes OK. The pools and jacuzzi were not crowded at all, and we love the fact that there are a number of activities available on the property if you are not looking to leave. They offer a free ice cream social, ukulele lessons, feather lei lessons (paid), keiki hula, and a shuttle to the other Hilton property. We took the petroglyph tour and it was a lot of fun for our kids. The free shuttle runs every 30 min. to 10pm to the nearby shops and the other Hilton properties, so it is convenient if you don't want to drive or if you don't have a car. The nearby restaurants are mostly expensive and it is moderately close to Kona.

Would we stay here again? Perhaps. It is a nice property but the simple fact of the matter is that most of the activities on the island are in Kona proper or Hilo/Volcano area and Waikoloa is a 30 or so minute drive to Kona and a 2 hour drive to Hilo so you rack up more miles staying in Waikoloa than staying in Kona proper. So if you want to minimize your drive time on the Big Island, I would recommend that you stay in Kona instead; there are other properties near Ali'i Drive that will not put a substantial dent in your pocketbook that will allow you closer proximity to interesting activities. If you have flexibility in your travel plans I would also recommend spending part of your stay on the Hilo side for closer proximity to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park/Kilauea Volcano so you can make the most of your vacation instead of spending a lot of time driving.

Short version: Great property with activities onsite and convenient shuttle to shopping center and restaurants, but -1.5 stars for distance from majority of activities in Kona and infrequent housekeeping; 3.5 stars total but I'll round up to 4 since TA doesn't allow half stars. :)

The two bedroom unit at the Bay Club was great. It was spacious and had two queen beds and one master suite. We were located on the golf course and the views were wonderful. The units had everything one needed . We also had parking in a covered garage. The staff was great and came whenever called immediately.

We have been staying at The Bay Club for approximately 15 years. The grounds are beautiful
with three swimming pools, several hot tubs, two outdoor bars featuring "Happy Hour," barbeques, easy parking and a quiet paved road in front for safe jogging between 3 Hilton resorts. One can walk to the Hilton resort in 5 minutes. The units are very spacious and have been renovated with granite counters, large screen T.V.'s and much more. Sundecks are large as well. We enjoy the area very much and it is an easy drive to several 5 star resorts and several pristine beaches to the North. There are trails leading from one resort to the other for the more adventurous.

Room Tip: The top floor offers views and of course would be quieter, however, we are fine with the 2nd floor a...

Second time on the island but first time at Waikoloa, will definitely return here. Excellent accommodations, amenities and service. Wonderful pool/jacuzzi at HGVC centre, 20 min walk to Queens/Kings shopping centres, five mile drive to Mauna Lani and best restaurants & beach (Hapuna beach not crowded but nice sand & warm water). I will review restaurants separately.

Room Tip: Three stories, we were on ground level. Bit of noise from upstairs but we were seldom inside!

The location of this property is perfect for those who are regular Hawaii visitors wanting to get away from the more crowded Kailua-Kona area.

As previous reviewers have mentioned, the renovated units at the Bay Club are large and well-equipped. We were lucky enough to not have noisy upstair neighbors, but I could see what other reviewers mean when they say footsteps from above can wake you up!

The pools aren't large and fancy like the Hilton sister properties, but they are clean, kept at a nice temperature, and not crowded. While the parking lot was quite full, we rarely saw people in the pool area -- except for the occasional person BBQing their dinner. I'd choose this property over Kings' Land and the Hilton Grand Vacation Club properties.

Don't waste your money on buying passes to access the pools at the Hilton Hotel or at Kings' Land Vacation Club. Enjoy the simplicity of the Bay Club pools or head out to any of the lovely beaches on the Kohala Coast.

Best affordable food in the area -- Island Fish & Chips, that funky Japanese noodle house in the food court at Queens' Market Place -- try the spicy pork ramen, or our new find -- Island Lava Java up in Waikoloa Village for Kona coffee and wonderful cinnamon rolls (Also had great mixed green salad and goat cheese from a local farm)

Room Tip: If possible, see if you can get a room on the top floor so you don't have the problem with noisy...

We are owners at the Bay Club in Hawaii and have been for a long time - previous to when Hilton acquired the property.

The property is great because the units are so large and spacious with a huge lanai. The kitchen is completely equiped down to rice cookers so really allow for a condo experience. I also love the washer/dryer in the unit, we can hop on the plane with a duffle bag knowing that we can wash clothes easily throughout the trip. The bar-b-que areas are great and allow easy food prep while meeting fellow visitors. Shuttles to the Kings and Queens shops is convenient and the near by golf courses are wonderful. The service at the resort has always been top notch and we have never been disappointed with office staff or maintenance.

The furnishings have been updated but are still more basic than Kings Landing or the adjoining Hilton property but this does not dimmenish our enjoyment of the unit at all.

My only complaint is that Bay Club travelors don't seem to have permissions at the Hilton Hotel property across the street that the other 2 propertyies have which is unfortunate because the hotel property is so beautiful. My family would go over several times and spend dollars on food and other if we had the ability to enjoy the amenities freely.

All in all, this is a great vacation experience and we have been enjoying it for over 15 years.

The Bay Club is serviced by the Hilton next door. Service is excellent, that is what you except from Hilton. The view of the golf course was the best. The condo was clean with marble corner tops and the furniture was new and comfortable.
Overall this is a place I would recommend to my friends. The only thing lacking was a beach on site. There is a beach near the property and another one a few miles away.

Room Tip: Chose a room on the side of the golf course. They quieter and have a better view.
