The trip consists of kayaking up the Wailua River about 2 miles and then hiking through the forest a mile to the base of Secret Falls. The company provides lunch, which you must order at least 24 hours in advance, so don't try to book at the last minute. Even though the weather was great for our trip, the trail was still pretty muddy, so wear clothing and shoes that can get dirty. Secret Falls is truly beautiful and guests are permitted to swim up to the waterfalls -- the water is a bit chilly in January for my tastes but two of our guys went in. Possibly the biggest asset was the quality of our tour guide, Bobby. He was friendly, personable, and extremely knowledgeable about the history of the area, the flora/fauna, and how the area fits into the ecological life cycle of the island. This was one of the highlights of our week on Kauai!

Aloha Marcell C,
Once again Bobby is the man! Glad to hear you had such an amazing experience. The waterfall has been known to be refreshing in the depths of Hawai'i winter. No for real it can be chilly. we carry heat blankets but have never had to use one. Usually a light weight cover up after the swim takes care of the chill until we get moving again. Mahalo for the review.

While visiting Kauia we took an excursion with Rainbow Kayak Tours. It involved a 2 mile kayak journey up the Wailua River and a mile hike through lush jungle, arriving at 125 foot waterfall where you can swim. An amazing trek. Our guide, Chris, was superb and included fascinating information on the island culture, history, flora and fauna throughout the tour. Round trip takes about 5 hours and is totally exhilarating. I had zero experience with kayaking and was still able to easily do this. Be sure to wear sunscreen while paddling. Be prepared to get muddy during the hike - and bring bug spray if you're susceptible to bites. And be prepared to be totally awestruck at the waterfall. Great fun - thank you RKT!

Aloha 55macs,
Great review. You covered some important topics. No one has ever regret having good footwear(sport sandal/running shoe). Our trail can get muddy in the winter months(nov-march). Only a handful of folks get eaten by the mossies. After a few days on Kaua'i you know who you are. They only like the sweet ones! Rarely do they affect everyone on the trip. Carrying spray is easy and lightweight insurance. Most people never end up using it though. All first time paddlers are welcome. This trip caters to beginner and advanced kayakers. Chris is one Kaua'is best guides. Chris has years of experience along with a passion for the 'aina(land). He is a knowledgeable, interesting person.... at work and in his personal life. Mahalo for your time.

This was a marvelous 1/2 day kayaking experience. We took a water camera because we did not want to chance our digital camera getting wet. But the other couple that went with us had no problems with water exposure and their digital. Chris the guide was knowledgable about the area, history and fauna. He taught kayak navigation well and was very careful on the speed of the travel upstream (my wife and I were slow, she had a torn rotator cuff injury but was still able to navigate well). He was also careful on the hike to the falls (he travelled barefooted, we had water shoes since we crossed the streams a couple of times) which is not too challenging. The water at Sacred Falls was cold, and I emphasize cold. But it was refreshing. The company provided a lunch with some of the best pineapple that I have ever had (Dole, eat your heart out). January was a good time to go as we only had one other couple in our group and the other groups that came to to falls were fairly small. The trip back was a little warm in January and we were glad that we had taken the 7:30 tour. It might get crowded during the summer months, so I would recommend that you take one of the earlier trips out to the falls as this will give you time to do something in the afternoon.

Aloha Bob5211,
Understandable not wanting to trash a nice digital camera. Fortunately, we have been using the same brand high-end drybag backpacks for the past fifteen years. Your guides will instruct you on proper closure. In this time, the only bag failure was due to human error. Us guides use these same bags in our daily lives as well as on expeditions globally. I oared the grand canyon over the course of a month and none failed. Chris is using his to explore New Zealand on vacation currently. Davey uses them on his motor bike daily etc. We don't feel the need for any other backpack at this point. Bring an SLR camera and it will be safe. Most of the best picture are in the interior where you are not in the water. Water proof cameras are great under the waterfall or while your kayaking. Many of our guides travel barefoot or in slippers but that could never be suggested to anyone who does not do this daily. Footwear will make the trip. Picking the perfect pineapple is an art. You may have the best pineapple of your life at uluwehi falls. A hui ho(until we meet again)

This tour was the highlight of our trip to Kauai. I will highly recommend tandem kayaking especially for couples, it is "test". My husband and I had an amazing time during this tour, there was never a dull moment – mesmerizing view s along the Wailua river, hike into the rain forest and the secret falls!!
Our guide Bobby was great; he is down to earth, knowledgeable about the forest, plants, and local life of people on the island. He familiarized us with local history along the hike to the secret falls. By the end of the trip, not only did we have an amazing time, but also made some friends!

This was definitely one of the highlights of our vacation. Kayak expedition, hiking, wading across a river (up to your waist), rope swing, lunch by the falls, more hiking. Our guide Rick was so well informed and entertaining - lots of fascinating stories about Kauai history, flora and fauna, while we savored local produce by the trail. He even made our daughter a woven bracelet from tree bark!
It's a perfect day out for an active family, but come prepared! Good walking shoes are a must (bare feet might work for the locals but we found it very slick!), bring a full change of clothes and even a sweater. It was a little chilly for us at the waterfall...
We got a 10% discount when we booked by phone because a friend referred us. It's worth asking for...
Works well as a morning activity and can be combined with the Smiths Family Luau in the evening.

Aloha Travel Lassie,
Great tips on the footwear. Going barefoot is only suggested to the people who use these areas daily. No one has ever regret having good footwear. Keens, Tevas, Five fingers, and old runners are all great options (they will get wet). A lightweight rain jacket is suggested only during our winter months. Majority of our trip is under the canopy of the jungle. Rick has been known to tell some tall tales. There all true! Look forward to your next tour up the Wailua. Mahalo for the review.
