“Great Condo, good location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 March 2012

First let me start with the good:

We stayed in a 4 bedroom condo and the we loved the layout/amenities in the rooms. We cooked the majority of our meals in the room and loved the kitchen. Had everything we needed (exluding food of course) The bedrooms were nicely decorated and comfortable. We had 3 balcanies and each had a nice view. One of the balcany had a really nice ocean view as well. really nice to have an elovator do directly to the room. Never seen that before.

Now for the bad:

-The AC did not appear to be working properly so each room was really cold.
-Becuase this conplex has plenty of kids, the pool area is active early in the morning. If you don't have kids and like sleeping in past 7am, this may not be the place for you. We also noticed that a fair amount of people who use the pool are not guests of the hotel. Each day we say unsupervised kids cross the street from another complex to use the pool.
-10am checkout time. We were able to get an extention til noon, but since most flights are in the afternoon, the 10am checkout can be a real inconvenience.

Room Tip: try to stay on the top floor and away from the pool. Heard lots of noise compaints.

We stayed in a 2nd floor 3 bedroom/ 3 bath unit and totally loved the accommodations. The attached pictures tell the story. The only thing we didn't like was how noisy the villas were. Every morning around 6:00 a.m. we were woken by the hyperactive kids above us running around their unit and on a few evenings people sitting outside on their patios drinking could be easily heard. These units have zero soundproofing, so if you're looking for peace and quiet these villas could be a problem depending on the occupancy. Really liked the storage room where you could get beach gear (chairs, boogie boards and umbrellas)on your way out. The Plantation Gardens and Roy's were our favourite restaurants. Parking was plentiful and always available.

Room Tip: Stay on the top floor!

My family and I had the absolute pleasure of staying at The Villas at Poipu Kai from Jan 9 - 19. The accomodations were fantastic! I will qualify by stating we are a middle to upper-middle class family; these are some of the nicest accomodations we've ever experienced.

Our party was made up of mom & dad, two very young girls, and grandpa & oma. We rented a poolside villa for our stay in Kauai and were presented with unit #F210. Villa "F" is adjacent to the parking lot for the poolside villas. Two out of our three bedrooms were located directly above the parking lot. Being located so close to the parking lot has its advantages and disadvantages. Fortunately our group is made up of heavy sleepers and were not disturbed by the minimal early morning activity in the parking lot below; yet we enjoyed having our vehicle close which made it easy to transport luggage. Getting up to the 2nd floor with luggage in hand was made easier by an elevator. We walked in to beautiful hardwood and travertine floors, granite countertops, comfortable furniture and spacious bedrooms & bathrooms. We felt very comfortable in our three bedroom unit (reportedly 1,600sf), the only area within the unit that felt tight was around the very large dining room table which could easily sit 8, and could expand to fit 10-12 with the two leafs we found in the walk-in closet. Our living/dining area opened up to a very large lanai overlooking the pool. The lanai benefitted from a south & west exposure we allowed us to enjoy the sunshine while the kids were taking afternoon naps. The resort was very quiet during our stay, and except for a few families seemed nearly deserted. The pool was easily accessible and a fair size, albeit extremely cold (the ocean in January was warmer). We only have 3 small complaints from our 10 night stay. 1)The cleanliness of the hardwood floors. Even on the first day we noticed our feet were extremely dirty from walking barefoot, a concern to us as our 11month old was crawling everywhere. 2) The fridge door was extremely difficult to open, someone young or frail would not have been able to open it; simply due to immense suction. Our group shared a good laugh over the entire 10 night stay over this. 3) The air vent from the dishwasher leaked water all over the kitchen island counter if the dishwasher was more than 3/4 full. A maintenance person attempted to fix it, but to no avail. These are all minor issues that did not affect our very positive experience!

The Poipu Kai Resort area is made up of a number of smaller condo/hotels, perhaps 7-8 developments, estimated size from 30 to 100 units. Also included in the Resort area are two small single family subdivisions. The Resort area benefits from a paved walking path that follows a greenbelt from east/west. The Villas at Poipu Kai resides midway, adjacent to the path. Walking west takes you to Brennecke and Poipu beaches, walking east takes you to Shipwreck beach. We found Poipu Beach to be the best for our very young kids, 2yrs and 11months. There is a man-made wading area of no more than knee depth which our kids greatly enjoyed.

Excursions from the Villas were few, perhaps 1 per day. We purchased groceries from the Big Save in Old Koloa, which provided us with generally everything we needed. You'll find very few organics here if that's what you're seeking. We shopped for souvenirs at the Poipu Shopping Village and The Shops at Kukui'ula. Two of us took a helicopter tour of the island from Safari Helicopters. This was a great experience, but we would be more selective of which helicopter company to choose next time. The service from Safari was great, but the rear seat of the helicopter was crammed with 4 passengers, the middle two experienced the worst views. Next time I would search for a helicopter company with smaller aircraft in order to ensure a window seat. Our only other paid outing was to the Kauai Plantation Railway. This experience basically takes the rider on a train through a farm. I enjoyed the history lesson, but it wasn't worth the money. The rum tasting from the Koloa Rum company was enjoyable; located on the same site as the train excursion.

All in all a fantastic trip! As a family we wouldn't hesitate to return to Kauai, and specifically the Villas at Poipu Kai.

Room Tip: Rooms on west side of the development are quieter. If you enjoy the sun ask for a west or south fac...

We stayed in a three bedroom poolside villa which was on the top floor which was very nice. The kitchen had all top of the line appliances, granite countertops with everything you will need in the cupboards. The unit we were in had three bathrooms, a master bath and one for each of the other two bedrooms. Living room has a comforatable couch and a nice size flat screen tv, the whole glass wall folds open to the patio which kinda overlooked the pool, the patio is a nice size with a table and chairs. Short walk to the ocean on a paved trail, beach stuff is all supplied by the villas and they had pretty much everything. The only compaint i had was the wifi was really weak from my room while i was by the pool but overall this is just a really great place to be

If you want luxury accommodations, this is the place to go. Travertine floors, granite countertops, 10 foot ceilings, washer/dryer, family room that opens wide onto the patio, beautiful kitchen, TV, Internet, comfy beds, clean, quiet, etc. We had 3 adult couples with us and they all had their own private places to sleep and feel fairly secluded. The pool is a beautiful waterfall pool and it is a little cold, but the hot tub in warm. In a 5 minute walk (or less) you are on Brennecke and Poipu beaches. We were within walking distance of swimming, snorkeling, body surfing, and turtles. If Sunrises and Sunsets over the ocean are important to you, this is a great place.

My family and I recently stayed at the Villas for 8 days. The property was gorgeous and the grounds were meticulous. Upon arrival to our penthouse suite we were greeted with fresh flowers in our kitchen and bathrooms. The villas was spotless and welcoming music greeted us as we opened the door. the beds were quite comfortable and the furnishings were very nice. It was one of the nicest resorts we have ever visited and we have traveled extensively. You will not be disappointed if you select the villas as your next island destination. Be warned that they are a bit set back from the ocean and do not offer oceanfront views, however, the villa itself is worth a short 5 minute walk to the beach.

The villa was very clean and spacious! The feature we loved the best was the patio - and how you can open the doors completely to the living room. One thing that would have made this place even better was ocean view. The beach is not far from the villas (and Poipu Beach was one of the best beaches, in our opinion, and it was about a 5-min walk from here). Lauren Mackenzie was very helpful - anytime we needed something, we were able to get it pretty quickly (extra shampoo, conditioner, laundry detergent, toilet paper...). Beach towels were provided. The kitchen was very good. The only thing was the dish washer - didn't work very well, several times we found residues on the dishes and had to wash again. They also include the manuals for all appliances in the villas (very useful!). We didn't spend too much time in the pool since the beach was right there, but the hot tub was nice. There's no room service or housekeeping (so if you are looking for this, go to a hotel). It's kind of like living at home (where you can do things yourself ... like cooking, picking after yourself) but more luxurious.

Room Tip: We stayed in E110 and it was great! I would choose something on the first floor.
