April 4, 2018, due to so much rain, the road is currently closed. It’s about 3.5 miles each way to the park/beach/pond on a red mud road, and you will have to wade through water for a lot of the walk, but the beach was spectacular!

Pack a lot of water (more than you ever dream you will need) and snacks. Wear footwear that can get wet but you can still walk in.

We did not check out the campsite, only the dunes and the Queen’s pond.

If you can endure the bumpy road it totally worth it!! Most beautiful beach ever!! You can drive right up on the beach. Sunset is amazing with the clouds rolling in and mountains in the background!

Let me start by saying you can get back there in a car but buy the rental insurance first. Lol. This road is rough but it’s worth it. Beautiful beach and surrounding mountains.

The south end of the Island was raining, so we headed to the north west end & drove the 4 miles of Potholes! We heard it was beautiful, but was not prepared for the sight of this Beautiful Beach & state park! It reminded us of one of our Beaches on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, called long beach. However, the white sand, the warm breeze, the blue water was fabulous & worth the drive!

We went at night to go stargazing since it was pretty clear out. We chose Polihale since there would be no light pollution.

Goodness, the drive there was atrocious. It took us roughly 40 minutes to drive about 4 miles on the dirt road. It was full of little dips and pot holes. We were also in a little 4-door sedan rental so we were worried about ruining the car if we went too fast. Also saw a lot of frogs and a few cats on the way.

But wow! The view. I've never seen so many stars in my life, and that includes going stargazing on a cruise. It was truly spectacular.

We brought a sheet from the hotel room, some water, and just relaxed for a bit. There was a family with a bonfire nearby and someone else sleeping in a hammock.

I have no idea what part of the beach we were on since it was nearly impossible to see. I did notice some structures though, and there seemed to be a decent sized hill to our right with the ocean in front of us.

Anyway, even though the drive wasn't any fun, it was absolutely worth it!
