I booked at the Hyatt with a Costco travel package, and was a little nervous after reading some of the reviews - so I want to submit mine. I'd rather give it a 4.5 rather than a 5, but that isn't possible in this rating system. :)

The grounds and pools are beautiful and fun - we enjoyed the pools, waterfalls and waterslides at both the Regency and the Residences next door. (We are a couple in our 50's.) We were traveling on a shoulder season (the week after Labor Day) - while they were sold out, there were fewer people per room since there weren't many school age children. We didn't find the pools crowded at all. We mostly came down to the pool mid-afternoon after a days activities, so we had no problem finding chairs in the shade. (and didn't the one full day we spent at the pool also)

Rooms: Okay, yes, the room could use a refresh, and I have certainly been in more luxurious hotel rooms. The room was serviceable – and most importantly clean. The only disappointment we had was that we didn’t get a King size bed despite asking for one (the size of bed wasn’t specified in our reservation, but we asked for one in the comments). And they said it was “two queen beds”, but these beds were definitely not the same size, so let’s say two queen and one full size bed. This wasn’t a problem for us, but if we were traveling with kids, it could have been an issue.

The bathroom is the area that is part that some people might take issue with – the toilet + shower - were tiny and dark. But the area with the sink + dressing area were very big, which was really convenient, and the walk in closet was also good.

More importantly, the view was wonderful, and we spent several evenings drinking champagne or margaritas and eating cheese & crackers (bought from Costco on the way and stored in the fridge) enjoying the sunset – and mornings watching the moonset as the sun rose.

A few more things: yes, there is a resort fee and a parking fee, but no more than at other resorts (why don’t they all just charge more for the room, the resort fee and the pretense of what it ‘includes’ is ridiculous, but that isn’t just a Hyatt issue). We self=parked, and never had a problem finding a space, but never returned during the time the Luau was happening. The parking spots were the same size as all the parking spots I am used to, here in the San Francisco Bay Area, but if you aren’t used to that, I can see why you might think they are small (I always think the parking spots in Florida when I visit my parents are enormous.) We didn’t go to the Luau. Japengo is lovely, but expensive. Umalu is perfectly fine. And we enjoyed having excellent Shave Ice right there on the property!

Overall, we had a wonderful time!

Staff took care of us being world of Hyatt members and upgraded our room to a full ocean view. This is our second stay at this hotel and is our favorite hotel on Kaanapali beach. Location to town and ships shops the best.

I read a ton of reviews of this place and went back and forth several times before booking it for a leg of our honeymoon. In the end, I'm really glad I decided to stay here! I assume if you're reading this that you're a "review reader" like I am, so I'm going to try to focus this on the things that reviewers on this site seem to have mixed opinions about.

The crowds: This seems to be one of the biggest issues people have with this place, but honestly, the Hyatt seemed to be on par with the other hotels in Kanaapali. It's a crowded touristy area. This hotel did not seem to be significantly more crowded than the others. If you're looking for total peace and quiet, Kanaapali is probably not where you need to be. That being said, the shape of the Hyatt's grounds leads to people being congregated in one large central area. The grounds of the Sheraton, by contrast, seem more spread out and it feels slightly less congested. Overall, though, the crowds were really not as bad as some on this site would lead you to believe. We never had an issue getting a bar stool, a pool chair, etc.

The rooms: I honestly don't understand the severity of the complaints here. Is it the Four Seasons? No. Is it clean and comfortable? Yes. Our ocean view room was situated on a corner, which meant we had two balconies. Awesome! The bathroom was a little tight but it wasn't a big deal. Housekeeping did a thorough job everyday. Standard hotel room amenities and decor. Overall, we were happy with it.

The beach: I read reviews that the beach here is narrow. It might be slightly more narrow than neighboring properties, but it really is a nice swimming beach. We saved our snorkeling for the Black Rock (an easy walk away) but did our wave swimming here.

Some other pros of the hotel: The bartenders don't skimp on the drinks. Valet service is prompt and helpful (for us, not dealing with the lot sizes in the self-park situation was totally worth the extra $10/day). Check in was easy. The concierge was great and never overly crowded. The on-sight convenience store is nice to have and the location of the hotel is prime. Every staff member we interacted with was pleasant and helpful. Overall, assuming you set your expectations for the fact that this part of Maui is crowded and touristy, I'd absolutely recommend this hotel.

This is the 2nd time we've stayed here. The grounds are great and there are plenty of lounge chairs between here and the Residence area next door. The beachside cabana's are a little pricey compared to the other resorts, but the prices go down after Labor Day. We had drinks down by the pool every day. They're good, but not great. Pool service was a little spotty, they can use a couple more servers there. We booked through Costco and got the breakfast buffet included. It's a basic buffet with a couple of different items added every day. They really need to update their chairs in the dining room. A lot of them were in need of replacement. Overall the Hyatt is a really nice place, The staff is great and the shops are nice on the lower level. Be careful using the iron. This was the 2nd time it stained my shirt when using the steam. They sent the shirt out for cleaning and even gave me a credit to use at the hotel.

The property is beautiful with gorgeous views!
Overall, our room was very nice (updated carpet, bedding, paint, pictures ...) but I wouldn't necessarily call it luxurious as some of the furnishings were a little dated.

The property is very nice with beautiful pool, atrium and more.

If you bring kids be sure to see the penguins (yes they have penguins onsite)
