“Room 403 - Maui Kai”
Reviewed 1 January 2012

The suite that we were in was very nice and had everything that we needed. We were able to buy groceries across the street at the Tines Supermarket (great grocery store, reasonably priced). Art and Sophie Nickel (Suite 806) helped us get a suite booked since their suite was unavailable. Everything that we needed was right there, so it was great. We did several snorkeling trips (I highly recommend the Pacific Whale Foundation Molakini and Lanai snorkel tour) and went sea kayaking with Maui Kayaks. The time that we were in Hawaii went way too fast. This was a great trip for our 15 year anniversary.

Room Tip: 403 is right across from the elevator, but we heard very little outside noise.

We stayed at the Maui Kai (#906 - studio) for 10 days at the beginning of December 2011. I called reception in October but was told they were full up for studios for the dates we wanted but by contacting Art and Sophie Nickel we were able to secure a studio unit. The instructions provided for our late check-in worked well. My husband and I really enjoyed the location - it had a great view and because of the height of the condo - it was very private. We also enjoyed the sound of the waves crashing on the beach below, which lulled us to sleep every night. #906 has a renovated kitchen, and is well equipped for a variety of cooking tasks. We also appreciated the extras like binoculars, flashlights, cooler, boogie boards, etc. (a drying rack or clothsline would be a useful addition). One downside (or upside) is that the lanai has been incorporated into the room - so there is no separate 'outside' area. Instead there are sliding glass windows and screens (the screens are useful to keep out the little birds that like to visit during breakfast). By locating the table and chairs in front of the window, you have a pleasant view with your meals. The daily maid service was great, and the staff were generally helpful with our inquiries. The queen sized murphy bed was comfortable. The small sized bathroom counter has been updated, but the shower area and toilet are older. We used the pool and hot tub in the evenings and mostly had the pool to ourselves. This unit only had a 'wired' internet connection, but it worked well. We used the laundry facilities (none on the 9th floor) a couple of times and they worked well. I would recommend the Maui Kai to others and would stay their again.

Room Tip: Higher floors will give you more privacy.

We stayed at the Maui Kai Nov 2-9, 2011 and had an amazing time! The location can't be beat! There is now a new hotel just down the beach which has the restaurant "Duke's" which is wonderful because a restaurant that you can walk to was the only thing missing the last time we stayed on Kaanapali beach. We were on our GPS in the room and it had us in the water, that is just how close you are! We watch sea turtles swimming from the lanai! Booked with Maui Kai 806 owners Art and Sophie Nickel which was easy and very pleasant. We will definitely return, hopefully sooner rather then later!

Who should stay here - couples who want a quiet, reasonably priced oceanfront condo in a good but less crowded location, with a good beach, but don't care about "resort" amenities or a fancy schmancy place.

Positives - right on the water with a good beach at the north end of Kaanapali Beach. You can walk or quickly drive to the heart of Kaanapali if you want. This place is quieter and less crowded. Concrete block building is not gorgeous but makes for a quiet condo unit. There is a good beach about 20' to the left of the beach (starting in front of The Mahana). Fabulous views and the shaded lanai was great - 180 degree view of Molokai and Lanai. The price is good, especially for the location. Unit was very clean, and as advertised. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

Grocery store and snorkel rentals, good restaurants and a fish market are all in walking distance.

We saw frolicking whales and turtles and a few dolphins right from our lanai. They entertained us at breakfast and "happy hour". Also, rainbows galore!

We rented our Maui Kai condo directly through one of the unit owners, Donna Bender.

Potential Negatives - small pool in the back of the building. If you are into laying out by the pool this is not the place for you. This is not a resort - it is a condo residence.

Room Tip: We like rooms a little higher up - you can see turtles and whales in the water better from the lanai...

We loved our 5 days at Maui Kai 504. The condo is comfortable, spacious, and well-appointed, with every amenity, from a coffee grinder and binoculars, to wireless internet, down to scissors and a flashlight in the utility drawer and sunblock in the bathroom cabinet. Even the pull-out bed got a positive review from our daughter, who has slept on plenty of bad pull-outs. The view is spectacular, especially the sunsets, with Lanai and Molokai in the distance. We saw whales and dolphins every morning while eating our breakfast and drinking coffee on the lanai. While the resort is surrounded by other hotels and condos, it is quiet, and parking was readily available. The property is well-maintained, with a small pool and spa, and a well-equipped game room. There are excellent restaurants and a grocery store within walking distance. The owners are responsive and provide all the information you need both before and during your stay. If you're going to Maui, I highly recommend Maui Kai 504 for your stay!

I checked in to 806 today only to learn that the owners next door are smokers. There goes any eveningtime on the lanai, not to mention the hope of leaving the door open and listening to the ocean. Other than the smokers next door, all of the good things about this place are true. The front desk manager told me that I wasn't the only one to complain about the smokers. You may want to consider that the wind blows the cigarette smoke into many of the units before you book your dream vacation here. I rated "Service" low because they could not move me to a unit that wasn't next door to the smokers. Good luck,
Kevin

Room Tip: This is a fine place if unfiltered second hand cigarette smoke doesn't bother you. Any room will...

Aloha,

My apologies for your experience. Although situations like this can happen in any hotel or condo, it is really a very rare occurrence at the Maui Kai. Maui Kai condos are privately owned, but the majority of units in the official Rental Program are non-smoking. The Maui Kai does have a designated smoking area outside the building, and the island of Maui has a strict law prohibiting smoking on lanais, so we were surprised to hear about your situation, but hope your overall stay at the Maui Kai was a pleasant one.

Mahalo,
Art Nickel

The eght nights in December 2011 we spent at Unit 301 at the Maui Kai were heaven. Easy to find. The best area of Ka'anapali Beach. Close to all levels of restaurants and a good grocery store. Unit is dazzling. The view is even more so. We saw sea turtles and whales from our lanai. You hear the waves all day and all night. Wonderful. Owners are friendly and available, and so is the fantasic cleaning lady. We plan to return next year.

Room Tip: We stayed in Unit 301. Best unit in this excellent condo resort.
