The Westin Maui Resort & Spa
Ranked #17 of 32 Hotels in Lahaina
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 21 March 2012

This March break was our 18th visit to Hawaii and we always hate to leave. The Westin Maui has been our most visited hotel on Maui and it didn't disappoint this year.
The location is one of its greatest assets - Ka'anapali is our favorite area in Maui with its fantastic beach, close proximity to historic Lahaina town, and great line-up of resorts lining the beach.
Because the Westin is beside the Whaler's Village Mall with everything from an ABC general store up to high end luxury goods stores and several good restaurants - you never feel like you are trapped on the resort and often we would walk over during the day for breakfast at Cane and Taro (awesome breakfasts) or go to Leilani's for happy hour (3 - 5pm with great pulled pork or battered Ono sliders and cheap Mai Tai's).
The resort also has a good breakfast buffet and it's formal Tropica restaurant serves a fantastic sampler course dinner with paired wines if you choose - loved it.
The best rooms are in the ocean tower facing the pool area and ocean. As a Starwood platinum, we were fortunate enough to be upgraded from our reserved Deluxe Premium Oceanview room (482) to a 1 bedroom suite (491) looking directly out on the beach and ocean from the living room with expansive windows and patios on the side from the bedroom and bathroom. Very nice suite.
The staff is great and there is always live entertainment in the evening to serenade guests with Hawaiian music.
The view from Ka'anapali beach out towards the islands of Lanai and Molokai is breathtaking and the sunsets are amazing.
A short (5 minutes) drive to the town of Lahaina for even more shopping and dining options is a great way to spend a few afternoons - this town is incredible and always fun.
The resort is showing its age in some areas but has been upgraded over the years and it has some real charm with its huge Koi pool by the Lobby and a myriad of waterfalls and walkways.
The swimming pools are great and rarely did we have difficulty getting good chairs.
The kids loved the water slides and activities throughout the day (free ukulele lessons was a big hit with our girls).
The parking lot is not big enough and gets filled up around 8 PM at which point they start offering complimentary valet parking - so you may want to think twice about springing extra for valet parking during your stay when it ends up being free for many. Regular parking along with HS Internet (not really so high speed) are included in the $25 per day resort fee.
All in all, the Westin has a lot going for it and compares well against the other resorts in Ka'anapali. The Ritz in Kapalua is much more removed from everything and is not that family friendly. Resorts like the Grand Wailea or the Four Seasons are nice but the area of Wailea doesn't compare to Ka'anapali and Lahaina.
We will stay at the Westin again on our next visit to Maui.

Great place. Kids will love the multiple pools and awesome water slide (big kids aka adults will love it too!). Walk right to beautiful Kaanapali beach. Conveniently close and right next to Whaler's village where there is shopping, a food court and some decent restaurants. A special shout out to our great maid, Virginia, who always make sure our room is always stocked with that wonderful Kona coffee, extra cups, sugar and cream. We definitely need our coffee even on vacation especially for our early morning excursions for the drive to Hana, sunrise at Haleakala, and early morning whale watch. In short I would highly recommend this hotel.

Absolutely fantastic.

I stayed in a 2 bedroom lock-off, the furnishings were impeccable, all first class finishes.

The only thing that I complain about is that the kids pool needs to be heated. I'm from the Caribbean and my kids found the water to be very cold, but made the best of it.

My husband and I enjoyed 9 days on Maui in February. This was our first trip to Maui and we chose the Westin based upon it's location, the beach and the listed amenities. After booking, I became very concerned about the Westin property after reading several negative reviews on Tripadvisor and other travel sites. Prior to arriving, I did the only thing I could do to help ensure a happy/comfortable stay: I called the day before to confirm our reservation and give my preferences for room/bed selection. The Westin could not promise anything specific, but did note my preferences.

Upon arrival, we found a great resort located in an ideal spot. The lobby is beautiful - lots of waterfalls, birds, etc. We had no problem at check in. However, the couple just down the counter from us was having a very bad experience. We booked a premium deluxe ocean view room and were placed on the 4th floor of the beach tower. I was immediately concerned when we realized that our room was close to the elevator. We called the front desk and requested to be moved. However, they could not move us for 1-2 days. So we unpacked and kept an open mind. The room was spacious, fairly nice and extremely clean. Wonderful king size bed (so comfortable), fabulous shower and amazing lanai with picture perfect view of the resort pool, beach and ocean. The best part was that we never had to move rooms. You could only hear the elevator when you were in the bathroom. We never heard it from the living/bedroom area. It was truly a non-issue. We slept every night with the lanai door open. There was a wonderful breeze, the sound of the waterfalls and ocean waves and an occasional bird chirping. The birds do chirp loudly of the morning and early evening when they roost. However, the noise was not during our "sleep" hours so they did not bother us one bit.

The grounds/landscaping around this resort are beautiful. The pools are very nice. We lounged by the adult pool several times. We never had a problem finding a chair in the afternoon. Granted, we didn't have a "premier" chair every day....but we were more than comfortable and happy. The bar is also super handy in the adult pool area.

The beach was great !! We rented chairs w/umbrella a couple of days and it was the best money we spent. Comfortable and clean. The resort only has a limited number of beach chairs and umbrellas......so make your reservation as soon as you can. They do rent out quickly and we missed out one day by waiting too late to call or stop by the towel desk.

We did not eat at the resort. We walked next door to Whalers Village and ate several nights at Leilani's. We also enjoyed shopping at Whaler's Village. Another nice perk to staying at the Westin is the free shuttle to Lahaina. Lahaina has all the nightlife !

Overall, we were pleasantly surprised by how much we loved The Westin. We are low maintenance and did leave the property almost every day for other activities. We were only in the room to shower/change clothes and sleep. If you are looking for a resort that is going to cater to your every need and give you more of an "all-inclusive" experience - you are not going to find it here. The resort is large with lots of guests. We, however, loved it and would return without hesitation.

A few side notes:
Beach - PERFECT
Location - PERFECT
Parking - Somewhat of a nightmare, but adequate. Free valet when the lot is full.
Added Perks - fresh flowers for your hair in the lobby daily and watching the whales from the beach and upper pool decks. You could also snorkel right off the beach or walk down to black rock at the Sheraton (short walk down the boardwalk). Live music at night and the sounds from the Luau.
Fun Staff - We really enjoyed the girl at the beach stand, as well as several of the bartenders and pool waitresses. Concierge and front desk was adequate.

A nice ocean front resort with beautiful landscaping, pools, shops, and activities. The rooms are slightly dated but very clean. The staff is wonderful and the breakfast buffet is great. The views from the beach tower are awesome. Please note that this is a very busy, family oriented resort.

Room Tip: This is one resort that you want to have a room in the beach tower to ensure views of both - the oce...

After reading so many negative reviews, I had very low expectations but our overall experience was a good one. I am Starwood gold and I was updated to a deluxe ocean view in the beach tower. The view from the balcony was stunning. The room adequate, a little worn and dated, but the beds comfy. The outside weightlifting deck was great. So fun to work out and have an ocean view. The location was great for our teen......he could wander down the boardwalk and over to Whalers village. Extremely crowded and hectic but fun if you are looking for action. Loved walking down the boardwalk and having happy hour at Leilani's. Great band and happy hour food and drink specials. The pools are pretty and we never had trouble finding a chair. If you
want shade, get your towels out early. We stayed four nights before moving over to the Westin villas, which are much nicer than the hotel. The villas are a better choice if you want a nicer room and a prettier, peaceful setting.

We stayed at the Westin Kaanapalli the week of March 12th. I thought the staff was very nice, always asking if they could help. The rooms were the only disappointing part. They were very small and dated. I am talking popcorn ceilings and peeling wallpaper in the bathrooms. The rooms were cramped, making it difficult to move about with two adults and two kids. I mean, there was not even a closet, just an armoire. But, the beds were awesome, and that was the most important part to me.

We liked the facility itself. Nice nice pools, especially compared to the hotels in the area (you could see them as you strolled the boardwalk). We had considered staying at the Sheraton, but after walking the grounds of the Sheraton, I am glad we chose Westin. That being said, if we go again, we'll probably splurge and stay at the Mona Kai. It was newer and seemed a lot nicer.

Overall, the Westin was a good spot to bring little kids with the two water slides, one for big kids and one for little kids. Also, the pool-side cafe had a nice big children's menu.

And, I enjoyed the location of the Westin, right next to Whaler's Village where you could grab some dinner.

I recommend booking a whale-watching excursion through the Westin on the Gemini. It was great.

Watch for the $25/day resort fee. Some of the guests did not know about it and were surprised that it was tacked on. I knew about it and thought it was fair considering it gave you your parking, 2 bottles of water a day and internet.
