After 10 days of touring Kauai and Maui and staying at various Starwood properties, Honua Kai was a treat! We stayed in a studio suite and the room was beautiful. With glass doors that open up the whole suite to a huge deck and full on ocean view. Spacious, gorgeous units with beautiful granite kitchens and islands and a luxury bathroom. The staff was polite and quick to attend to our needs. We really enjoyed the property but definitely not walking distance to the main part of Lahaina.

Duke's has brilliant sunsets and great food and drink!

For the health conscious, we found some fantastic health food stores very close to the property with great locally made specialty items and very reasonably priced groceries. I recommend lilikoi cream cheese and bagels.

Honua Kai definitely exceeded our expectations of luxury and left us missing the ALOHA we found there at the end of our trip.

Room Tip: Higher floors have great views!

We started our journey to this beautiful location in October 2011. After searching through many locations in Maui…we decided to go with Honua Kai Suite 616 (VRBO). The photos were extremely accurate and we were very pleased upon arrival. This was our first time booking through VRBO and our only trepidation was the large payments we made up front. This was always in the back of my mind until we arrived and all was good. I could have alleviated this worry…paying by pay-pal, visa or getting extra insurance...but chose not to. Our flight was late and we called Chris once we arrived. He met us in the lobby and my boys still talk about him as if they know him personally. I don’t think my eldest son wore shoes our entire vacation (unless he had to of course) We only called Chris once during our 10 day stay, he responded quickly and answered any questions we had. He was super friendly and made us feel welcome right away. Checkout was easy and we got our deposit back in a timely manner. This was a magical vacation for our family…everything seemed to go as clockwork. My husband and I celebrated our 20th anniversary (We had been to Maui before on our Honeymoon and our 5th anniversary) This time we travelled with our children and loved every second of it. Our boys fell head over heels in love with Maui and the HONUA KAI. One of our boys celebrated his 11th birthday…he had the goal to be the first one in the ocean and the pool. He also had the goal to be the last one in the ocean and the pool on the day we were leaving…both his goals were met. Upon arrival we went shopping at Safeway. It took us about 5 days to realize that the Times market was just a stone throw away. From that point on we did all our shopping at the Times market. We did venture out to Costco…but in hindsight…I would just buy our groceries locally the next time around. We usually have a food memory from all our vacations. We stopped to buy fresh coconut daily and picked mangos off of local mango trees. (with permission from owners of course) We saw whales, rainbows, sunrises and sunsets from our balcony. While on the SUP boards we saw turtles right at our own beach. We did body surfing, body boarding and snorkeling daily. My husband and I went for daily walks early in the morning before the boys even woke up. It was so nice having all the surrounding hotels and the option to walk on the beach or on the boardwalk. Our ultimate favorite time was on Kaanapali Beach. Hands down…a truly relaxing location. The long and short of it is that we didn’t have to even leave our property to find a little piece of paradise. In terms of the resort we were impressed. It was worth it to spend a little extra for our partial ocean view room. Next time we might even try ocean view. The beds were awesome and we had amazing sleeps every-night. The room was clean and tidy upon arrival. We didn’t really need the housekeeping because of the washer, dryer and dishwasher. The only thing that I missed was a real vacuum. The kitchen had everything necessary for cooking to be a breeze. It was nice to be on our own timetable regarding food…especially with kids. We ate out only one night at the Hard Rock Café and were impressed with the service and food. We used the barbeques and ate at the beach a few times as well. The employees at the front desk were always nice and hospitable. Returning the towels was a highlight for our boys….just to get a chance to talk to the TOWEL GUYS!!! They were hands down the favorite resort employees we ran into. The housekeepers were friendly and courteous whenever we saw them in the hallway during our stay. We did order from Dukes Restaurant on our last day…while at the pool. The food and service was awesome. The variety of pools was nice….Our boys enjoyed the two outside pools the most. The slide seemed pretty busy most of the time and they got tired of it pretty quickly. The Hot tubs were amazing…one was hotter than the other one and felt so good at the end of the day. We did venture out to Haleakala, The Royal Lahaina Luau, The Road to Hana and A Quicksilver Snorkel Trip. It was good for the boys to experience all of these things but they weren’t the highlights of our vacation. We brought our own snorkel gear and purchased boogie boards upon arrival…they were relatively inexpensive and can be used for the whole vacation. (you can actually buy them right at the Times Market) Having the use of the beach mats, chairs and snorkel gear in Unit 616 was a bonus. I have already recommended our unit to anybody who was compelled to listen to our vacation stories. We will return and will continue to recommend the property. The only downfall for us was changing rooms on Day 10 of our 14 day stay. We stayed 10 days in VRBO Suite 616 and 4 days directly with the hotel. There really was no difference for us. Except for the convenience of having someone make our beds and bring fresh towels. We actually had issues with the room we booked through the hotel (the lock on the safe didn’t work, the balcony lock didn’t work and the toilet got plugged). All these issues were fixed on the first day. We did enjoy a day use room for a fee…totally worth it when you have a late flight and are travelling with kids…we got to enjoy the resort and the water a little while longer. In total we ended up being in 3 rooms during our stay. The rooms are all similar…with only small differences in décor. I would recommend VRBO …especially with the cost savings and the comfort of feeling like you are at home.

My family of six adults just had a great time in Maui and staying at the Honua Kai made the whole vacation wonderful. We stayed in a three bedroom condo with three full baths, great kitchen with high end appliances including a wine cooler, great large balcony overlooking the pool and great view of the ocean from the eight floor. Great staff and concierge services are awesome. They booked all our island activities and dinner reservations flawlessly. What more can you ask for? We are definitely going back!

From the moment we arrived we knew we had nailed it! A long way from Chile to Hawaii for our honeymoon....and Honua Kai exceeded our expectations!
Service was amazing from front desk to service at the pool and beach area. Our room was exquisit, it was an ocean view "studio". You might think it´s rather small, but not, it was huge! bed was super comfy, had a kitchen with everything you needed, had a washer and drier machine, and the staff would give you every single day, a dishwasher and laudry detergent so you wouldn´t have to buy any! Bathroom big with shower and jacuzzi. We got champagne from the staff the first day welcoming us and congratulating us for our honeymoon, so nice!
Pools are awesome and the beach is amazing, specially sunsets. It´s true when they say is the perfect location for snorkleling, we did it almost everyday and got to see beautiful fishes and even sea turtles and dolphins! if you walk a little towards Lahaina on the beach, it gets better and better, and there are trees on the beach that allow you some shadow and you can sleep or chill listening to the sea. Really, is there anything better than this?
The Duke´s restaurant is awesome and has great food and drinks, and it´s a nice place to watch the sunset from. It´s located on the pool area and right next to the beach. We went there almost everyday. The atmosphere is fantastic and everyone is so friendly.
You can rent snorkle gear, chairs and umbrellas for US$10 , there´s a nice little grocery store at the hotel, opened until late. Parking lot is great if you have a car.
On the day we left, our plane was to take off around 11 at night, so the hotel kept our luggage in a safe room and even let us have towels and then shower in the afternoon before our flight. That was awesome.
We would love to go back to Hawaii, and we definately will be staying here again. It made our honeymoon just perfect.

Having a full kitchen and laundry facility is the only way to go! The beach is awesome, the pools are good and the food/drinks at Dukes Are great. We enjoyed taking walks down towards Blackrocks and snorkeling. Great fish counts in front of the resort and Blackrocks. Go for an Ocean view room or partial Ocean view. Enjoyed many "cheaper" meals on our Lanai with a great view.

My wife and I stayed here while we were on vacationing in Maui. Upon arrival, the staff were very friendly and extremely polite even at midnight due to flight delays.

We stayed in Room 618 which is a (1) bedroom suite with an partial ocean view. We didn't mind the view as it had some undeveloped land. There was nothing obstructed in our view and since we were on the 6th floor, we could see the ocean as well as Lanai. There was no "stinking" water treatment smell like others had suggested. It was just simply beautiful!!!

For the folks who were complaining about the parking lot as a view, splurge a little bit more and get yourself a room with better view. You are on vacation and this isn't your friendly neighborhood hotel next to Disneyland. This is Maui nonetheless. So don't go knocking on the Hotel because you couldn't get the same view as somebody who spent a little bit more.

Also those complaining about kids being there, if you read their website they do say they are family friendly, so I would recommend staying somewhere else. We have kids of our own but we did not bring them. I didn't mind hearing the kids outside, I only heard one in the hallway 1 time during our week stay and as far as the pools are concerned, I never saw a ton of kids in them at all no matter what time of the day or night it was.

The kitchen was fully equip with Bosch appliances and had a Washer/Dryer in the compartment next to it.

Living room had a sleeper sofa with a 42" LCD TV with a Blu-Ray Player connected to it along with a chair. We never really spent a lot of time in the living room, most was spent on the Lanai enjoying the view and relaxing or at the beach.

Bedroom had a comfortable king size bed with feather pillows and was extremely comfortable. I never slept so good being away from home.

I loved the fact that the valet's knew who we were and even made a point to learn our names. They were willing to clean the garbage out of the car for us and carry everything to our room when we went grocery shopping. The service we received was top notch in every way.

Our room was cleaned on a daily basis and never had any issues with the cleanliness of the hallways, the elevators were wet at times from people going up to their rooms, which is to be expected, or at least I expected it.

The grounds were beautiful and extremely clean, I loved the koi pond outside, you can also check out lounge chairs, umbrellas, and get towels from the pool area to take to the beach. They also have tubes and floaties for the lazy river or to take to the beach as well.

The two restaurants on site Aina Market and Duke's were great to have there. Aina market delivers to your room, but not Duke's. We ate at both, they were very good. Aina market is also a store where you can get some basics for your stay. As with all places at a hotel a little more expensive than going to the grocery store but it's great to have on site if you need anything last minute.

The only thing that could potentially be a negative for some is the water pressure, it's like sandblasting your skin every time you take a shower, but I got used to it.

This is a beautiful place, staff extremely nice and attentive, grounds were beautiful, the beach was literally at our front door, and we had an amazing time and we are already planning our trip back next year.

Room Tip: Stay in the Hukulani tower. The spa and the restaurant are in the process of being built. 6th floor...
