Luckey Strike Charters
Reviewed May 22, 2018

It was a long night and a long way out and back. However, we had a very successful trip, a couple of nice tunas and mahi mahi.

After doing a bunch of research, we decided to go with lucky strike and after a quick pep talk from Tad we thought we made the right decision....and then he left. The captain didn't really interact with any of us and after the lures were put on (not live bait), we didn't really see the other guy for the remainder of the boat ride either. No bites, just did a 6 hour circle around Maui. Spend your money elsewhere, it looked like all of the other companies had fish when we got back to the dock.

My buddy and I went fishing with Captain Tad on January 23rd for a 6 hour charter that left Lahaina Harbour at 430am. Captain Tad said it was better to leave early and tryout a few spots closer to shore for the big nighttime feeders.

After a quick boat ride we hit our first spot and the deck hand rigged up a mackerel as bait and we were trolling on the bottom for some big boys. not even 5 minutes into fishing and I was getting hits and set the hook into a nice giant trevally. My buddies turn was up as we hit another spot and after a few minutes he got bit off by a large fish that the guide guessed was some sort of barracuda judging by the bite marks on the mackerel. We rigged up again and not long again my buddy hooked up on a nice blue stripe snapper that the deck hand said was an invasive fish so he went into the cooler. we headed to another spot and i was up on the rod again and managed to hook up into a shark that we faught for almost 15 minutes and just as we were close to getting a peak at him he bit the line off. the deckhand said he was a small one, only about 7 feet or so!!!

the sun was starting to come up so we went to a spot to catch some live mackerel for bait. after a quick tutorial on how to do it, we were jigging in 150 feet of water. the mackerel were fun and pretty scrappy fighters. we hooked up a dozen. Then we were into the big water. we had a surface line going and a down rigger for the deep fish and we connected with a tuna, amber jack and some grey snapper!

I lover the day on the water with Captain Tad and his deck hand! it wasnt just a long boring boat rided trolling a surface lure like other places do. he has all the hotspots figured out from his long career on Maui. Iloved that we mixed up fishing techniques and got to catch our own bait. We caught a great mixed bag of fish and got to keep as much of it as we wanted. the fish we didnt want Captain Tad took home and he said he likes to give fish to his neighbours and friends that cant get out on the water anymore!! cant find a better guy than that!

I will book with them again in a heartbeat the next time i am in Maui

Tad Luckey doesn't fish Maui like other sport fishing charter boats. We pulled out of Lahaina Harbor at 04:00 AM in the morning. - yep, you read that right. Hours before the other boats and while the nocturnal feeders down below are still hanging out at their "night clubs". We ran just a short distance off-shore and slightly south off Lahaina. By dawn we had landed seven beautiful fish, split between Giant Trevally (Ulua) and Gray Snapper (Uku), about one every 10 minutes. At sunrise we mooched for small mackerel, to bolster the bait supply, then spent some time trolling and landed a lovely Amberjack using spinning tackle. What a hoot that was for a boy raised on Walleye fishing in Wisconsin!

Tad's been doing this for over four decades, right here in Lahaina, and yet shows the delight of a little kid hooking his first trout when the bite is on. What a pleasure he was to fish with. Garret, Tad's mate, was also just awesome: personable, professional, extremely competent and super pleasant to chat with.

By 10:30 we're heading back to our car with a cooler of beautiful filets and by noon we were sitting by our pool enjoying Panko crusted Ulua and Uku perfectly fried in coconut oil accompanied by rice and a fried egg. That, my friends, is living! Tad, we will be back!

This was my boyfriend and I first trip to Maui. I choose this charter online due to being able to keep your fish. We rented the whole boat ( way...... worth it) and caught fish. We went to resort and cooked a huge dinner for a party of 11. Had a great time and will always use them.
