This was our fourth time hiking this trail and every time it has been different. If the forecast is sunny, go early and bring sunscreen and water. If cloudy and raining, watch for mud and slippery parts of the trail. A very fun and rewarding hike.

This is a pretty steep trail (we began near Papalaua Beach) and hiked for about an hour. The trail is MUCH longer. The views are worth the effort (see photos). Bring water and take your time.

This is a HIKE so wear appropriate footwear.

There is limited parking.

Maybe it was the challenge, or the sites or the photos or the company, but this zig-zagging trail was amazing!

We started on Ukumehame side and hiked to the 'top' then returned back to our starting point. The trail is easy to follow, and you know you're near the 'top' when you approach the wind farm. You'll walk through the wind farm as you reach the top. The day we went the views were good, not great. It was a windy day with white caps, so it was harder to pick out whales in the channel. I recommend bringing binoculars if you want to look for whales. Clouds cover the top half of Haleakala, so we didn't see that. But, we were able to see Koho'olawe and Lanai. We did this hike in March, and there were some wildflowers starting to bloom, and a few butterflies were visible as well. Few birds were heard or visible, and we didn't see signs of other wildlife.

The hike to the 'top' and back was about 3 hours for us. One of us had trekking poles.

Equipment:
- Shoes: You should have good soled shoes, and as some recommended, if you have weak ankles, wear hiking boots.
- Trekking poles: If you have weak knees or aren't used to climbing hills, bring trekking poles.
- Water: There's no water on the trail, bring your own.
- Hat and sunglasses: Protect yourself from the sun!
- Snacks: If you want, but not necessary ... it was so breezy at the top, we hiked down a bit to get out of the wind.
- Insects: It was so windy, there weren't any bugs ... but this is seasonal.

Ukumehame Parking
- There's parking on the east side of the highway. The trail head is just north of the tunnel. It has room for at least 10-15 cars, and more on the side of the road. There was lots of glass on the ground indicating that cars had been broken into. As a result, we decided to leave our car by the side of the highway.

Trailhead
- You'll see the trail in the north-east corner of the parking lot.

This hike had great views. Very rocky trail but worth the hike. Trail head comes up quick on the way to Lahaina.
