“Costco Travel Package Dream”
Reviewed 3 April 2012

My husband and I got the Costco Package to Maui and we stayed at the Royal Lahaina. The package included daily breakfast, $200 food credit, a luau, a dinner cruise, a rental car, and free self parking.

Costco Package Review
We used everything included in the package.
Room 1124 that we got had an amazing view.
The breakfast was buffet and its pretty good. If we had to pay for it we probably wouldn't have since $40 for 2 people is pretty expensive.
They used the $200 food credit at the restaurant and at the ice cream shop. Keep in mind that you can use it towards a picnic basket you can order from them a day before. The picnic baskets are between $30 to $45.
The luau was really good and I would totally recommend it.
We opted for the dinner cruise instead of the dinner show and it was the highlight of our trip.
The rental car we got was a compact car that we valet parked the first night we got there but we self parked afterwards. There is plenty of parking if you come back before the luau.

Hotel Review
The pools were pretty small but who needs one when you have the ocean right in front of your hotel.
The hotel is a short walk from Black Rock a great place to go snorkeling.
Chris was the nicest person at the front desk.
The vanilla macadamia ice cream is really good.
The ham and cheese sandwiches are decent.
The ahi tacos are yummy.
The breakfast buffet is great if you get it included in your package.
Self parking is horrible during the luau.
Whalers Village is a short walk away.
The hotel is clean.
They have guest relations center where you can use the internet for 15 minutes and print out stuff that you might need.

Overall if we were to go back to Maui we would definitely stay at the Royal Lahaina.

Room Tip: We stayed in Tower in room 1124 on the 11th floor and it had an amazing view.

Our partial ocean view room, which also looked out over a golf course, was clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. The staff, though friendly, seemed to have trouble getting the amount of towels and wash cloths correct. The lanai was not very private and was noisy because we were situated several floors up above a roof air conditioner. There was no screen in the door wall, even if you wanted to leave it open. The breakfast buffet was good, but pricy. We cut the cost in half by taking it for your entire stay, four days. I'm not sure why resorts like this feel it necessary to nickel & dime their guests with costs for WiFi internet and parking. There are 2 average pools with surrounding lawn space. The ocean beach area was not condusive to recreation with its posted warnings and heavy surf.

This is a spectacular location just steps away from an amazing beach. The views are also amazing, with Lanai visible off in the distance. It's also an extremely good price for the location. It is not, however, anything luxurious or fancy. There is a main building and a number of cottages. The cottages housed perfectly decent motel style rooms with budget furniture. No internet, and old and small TV's though there was a small fridge in the room. Outside, there were two mediocre pools (both in terms of size and cleanliness), but as said before, the adjacent beach was great. The staff was unfailingly polite, but frankly not so well trained. Whenever someone had to log into a computer it was if they had never seen a PC before and they spent more time assisting each other than helping guests.

It's really like a 2 star property in my book, but that's ok. It's decent but forgettable. If you get to Maui often or are overnighting before catching a boat from Lahaina, it's a good location at a decent price. If this is some kind of once in a lifetime dream vacation you should set your sights a little higher.

Thank you for the review! We’re glad you enjoyed our world class location and found great value for the price. All of our travel partner companies rate our resort in the 3 to 3½ star range. Throughout the 27 acre resort, we offer 2 full-service restaurants, 3 outdoor pools, 10 tennis courts, a poolside bar, a nightly Luau dinner show, retail shops, and much more. We are in the process of upgrading the TV’s in the cottages, and we currently offer high speed WiFi throughout the entire resort including all guest rooms. While the cottages are a great value at the moderate level, the luxurious guest rooms in the main tower have undergone a $35 million renovation and we’ve recently added massage services featuring a brand new relaxation lounge. We take pride in our staff and the quality guest services we offer as we are one big family working together to ensure all of you make many wonderful memories here at the Royal Lahaina Resort. Mahalo!

“O Hana”

The Royal Lahaina was our base from which we explored Maui. We were made to feel very welcomed. Celebrating it's 50th anniversary in 2012 since 1962, we were pleased that the tower rooms were nicely updated. Comfortable, roomy, and better in person than in the photographs. The sliding panel shutters were especially nice for privacy while allowing the breeze and sunrise concerto of birds. The sink faucet in the bamboo waterfall design was a very nice touch. We enjoyed the location with evening walks to neighboring hotels to the south and the Whaler's Village. With a golf course to the east and south and cottages surrounding, there is a relaxed uncramped feeling to the grounds. We did pass on the morning breakfast buffet as well as the Hotel evening Luau. The pools are relatively small and they were on the cool side temperature wise for March. We had the pleasure of seeing the whales from the beach at the Hotel on our arrival day and hearing them underwater on all of our afternoon swims upon returning to the hotel each afternoon. The rooms were very nicely serviced each day while we were away. At the guest relations office next to the coffee shop were we went to use the printer for some emails, the Hawaiian word for that day was, “O Hana” which meant Family and Friends. The staff was very friendly. Georgie and Rosaria at the front desk were exceptional. We felt the “O Hana” feeling at the Royal Lahaina which we seldom find on our mainland vacations. It was a pleasure to drive in each evening and be welcomed with an “Aloha, Welcome home.”

We make a distinction between our stay at the Royal Lahaina, and the presence of Pleasant Holidays at the Royal Lahaina. There was a “Pleasant Holidays” activities desk at the Royal Lahaina at which I found the agent, Deb, snooty and unfriendly. It had felt we were looked down upon by her and even the Pleasant Holiday presenter at the Island Orientation on that Thursday March 22nd, 2012. The person conducting the presentation, at the end of the presentation while at the table with the computers for booking the activities, was looking at the screen when someone came up to her. She said, “one moment I'll be right with you.” nicely enough without looking up, but when she did look up and saw that it was another salesperson from the Wydham timeshares, she apologized to her saying, “sorry I thought you were a customer.” That was a very telling moment to us that while trained to be “pleasant” the “Pleasant Holidays” presenter had a lesser view of the tourists. We avoided “Pleasant Holidays” and felt more comfortable making our activities arrangements locally elsewhere. We will never use AAA and Pleasant Holidays together for any of out travel arrangements again. We booked 9 months in advance and had already paid for our non-stop flights, but, without notification they changed our non-stop to a flight with a layover. While our AAA agent was apologetic and herself struggled with Pleasant Holidays by phone for hours to restore our non-stop flights, had Pleasant Holidays been allowed their shenanigans we would have not only been inconvenienced, not had what we paid for, but also lost the better part of our first day on the island.

In closing, thank you to The Royal Lahaina Resort, for making our stay special. The “Welcome Home” greeting each evening driving in was a special touch and it meant a lot. Mahalo.

Room Tip: Avoid the Southside Tower lower floors away from the Beach, you won't get a good view of the oce...

Comfortable rooms, 2 pools, adjacent to beach.
Has the best Luau on the Island!
I could certainly recommend this hotel.
Only $1 to ride on the tram or bus to the nearest shops or to Lahaina centre.
We Britts find that eating anywhere on these Islands ain't cheap.
Breakfast for 2 averages at $50, evening meals for 2 around $100. Island and volcano trips between $60 to $90.
As accommodation is room only, 14 nights over on these Islands is going to run up a high credit card bill by the time you get home!
All worth it though, excellent golf courses and stunning scenery.

My mom was very concerned about ending up in a lower class hotel. She was totally amazed when she arrived to find the Resort was quite lavish and exceeded her expectations. She was thrilled beyond belief with the oceanview room she received as well as the ADA handicap accessibility, Valet and staff services and help! Keep up the great work!

Room Tip: Oceanview all the way

I stayed at the Royal Lahaina last week and thought it was a perfect choice for what I was looking for. When I travel I prefer to stay away from big resorts and gravitate towards more quaint options with lots of personality, but this particular trip I was with my dad so wanted something that was easy and less DIY. The RL was a perfect compromise. The lobby is not super fancy and modern, some may actually say it's dated, all I know is when you walk into the very open charming lobby area, you feel like you are in Hawaii, and it feels good :). The rooms are newly remodeled, and while modern they did a fantastic job on the beautiful woodwork and decorations while keeping the rooms feeling charming, fresh, and Hawaiian. We stayed on the 12th floor and our view was AMAZING.

The pools are smaller and simple rather than fancy, but I though they were more than enough considering the hotel is located on a beautiful beach. I watched whales splashing around from the beach and there are lots of snorkeling too! Oh bring your own snorkel gear, it's around $25 to rent it for a day!

The staff was all really friendly and helpful. The little open restaraunt has descent food at descent prices for lunch although the breakfast buffet is a little steep at $22.

As far as the luau, if you want to get a taste of little about Hawaii's luau, and aren't worried about anything authentic then do it, but if your on the fence I'd save your money, it's pretty touristy. With that said it's pleasant and the performers are very good.

Room Tip: Get an ocean view room that's high up!
