“Maui Ocean Discovery Center”

Ocean Science Discovery Center
Reviewed April 14, 2015

We needed a break from the sun and heat, so we headed to the Maui Ocean Discovery Center in Maalaea. We were happy to see a sign letting us know they offer a AAA discount, a nice perk right off the bat. When we walked into the Center, we were outside at first, my 17 year old exclaimed that she was HOT and thought the aquarium would be inside. Fortunately almost all exhibits were, so our goal of finding an activity out of the sun was a success. We found the Center to be informative and enjoyable. Being from Seattle, we had visited our aquarium many times. It was fun to learn more about the fish and marine life around Maui.

We visited here after getting off the plane because we wanted something mellow to do until we could go to our vacation rental. The aquarium is nice and is a combination of indoors and outdoors. Lots of great exhibits. We happened to get there during feeding time of the sharks and rays so that was fun to watch.

It's a great little aquarium with plenty of informative displays. They have a ton of tropical fish! I think it's the most in the world. They also have a couple outdoor tanks with sea turtles and juvenile sharks/rays, as well as a touch tank. The volunteer there were very knowledgeable and we had a nice chat with her. By far, our favorite part was the shark tank. It's incredible! We ended up sitting there for at least half an hour and then spent another ten minutes slowly walking through the tunnel.

For me, the major downside to this place was the price. It's pretty expensive, but if you book online ahead of time, you can get a week pass for the cost of a daily admission. That's what we did and since we stayed in Maalaea, it was easy for us to just pop over there and visit a few tanks when we had some spare time.

I'd recommend coming here before you snorkel as it will help you identify fish when you're in the ocean.

We only had about 1.5 hours at the Ocean Discovery Center before it closed, and we could easily have spent more time there. We got really engrossed in watching the tropical reef fish, and we identified a number of species that we'd seen while snorkeling but didn't know their names. I also found the exhibit about native Hawaiians to be fascinating. The old inhabitants of the isle could free dive 200 feet, wedge their foot between rocks and wait for a fish to go by before spearing it.

A visit to the aquarium, though pricy, really provides appreciation and context about the ocean world.
