Bellows AFS, if you are honored to have served and have proper ID, is a gem of a getaway. The surf, sand, weather and facilities are second-to-none...and on normally crowded Oahu to boot! Yes, the cinder block cabins are not the Marriott resort. And, yes, there may be a bug or two. But, hey, it IS the tropics and the proximity to the beach more than makes up for any lack of artificial bling at more expensive resorts. We adore Bellows and hope the benefit for service people and their families remains for many years. Thank you, Bellows staff!

Room Tip: Your choice, ocean front or back row...both have wonderful advantages.

We stayed at Bellows AFS in May 2017 for 1 week, this is our 5th/6th time staying here and we wouldn't stay anywhere else. We had a two bedroom front row cabin, we opened our door and there is the beautiful blue ocean just feet from our front door. We are always beyond happy when we live. There isn't AC in the cabins but you don't need it with the ocean breeze coming through the doors and windows and hearing the ocean at night amazing. We'll see you next year!

Bellows can be thoroughly enjoyed; keep in mind, its not a luxury 5-star accommodations. Its as good as can be for a beachfront cabin or condo stay. Can't beat the price. Because it is for military personnel only, entry is quite secure. Its very quiet at night. Lots of security presence. Rules regarding grills, quiet time, canopies, trash, etc keep the place quiet and clean. That's not to say you won;t see the occasional roach or ants; be prepared. Avoid leaving food exposed. We stayed in a 2 bedroom cabin on the beach. One room had 2 twin beds. The other room had a full size bed. Then there is a sleeper sofa in the living room. Kitchen is equipped with full refrig, stove/oven, microwave, toaster, and kitchenware. Wall mounted TV also had a DVD player (which we could not figure out how to use it). Bathroom has a shower, blow dryer too. Each unit has 2 parking stalls assigned to it. The back door leads to the beach front. It has patio furniture to sit and watch the waves. Also has a clothes line to line dry wet towels (need to bring your own beach towels); the unit has bath and hand towels only. Free WiFi. Cabins do not have AC; ceiling fans only. The checkin desk remains open until 6 pm - but you can do late checkin at their Security Office on the side of the building. They have rental items available so guests can enjoy miniature golf or beach activities. There is also a children's playground. The bar and Starbucks open on the weekend only.

Room Tip: If you want AC then request for a condo; condos are not directly on the beach

We live about 15 minutes away in Hawaii Kai and wanted to stay at Bellows for sometime. We stayed 2 nights...Sunday and Monday nights in the newer Condo Units...which have central a/c.

This is what we observed during our stay.

The Very Good: FABULOUS ocean views and very soft, whiter sand beach that is clean. Lifeguards and several bath houses that have toilets, sinks and showers. The "military" area is beyond the open public area(weekends only) so it is more private. The grounds are Very well kept and cut. VERY clean with trash receptacles around. About a 3 mile paved trail(easy). Gas station(gas is about 30 cents less than off base), a decent size BX with goodies for your stay...ice, booze, soda, water, frozen food, sweets, canned goods, chips, candy, cereal, RX, beach supplies, suntan lotions, charcoal and lighter fluid, coffee, soap, bug spray, newspaper, etc. Also, can get hot dogs/sausage cooked on a bun(at times better than other times). 18 hole putt putt golf coarse that is $6.00 per adult to play. VERY nice area with island placards so the kids(and us adults :)) can learn a bit about each Hawaiian island. Tennis courts and movies certain days of the week with free popcorn. Fishing is allowed in certain areas.
Our condo unit was on the second floor of a 2 building area. All was quiet and spacious. Outdoor lanai with chairs. Ceiling fans in both bedrooms and main area. A/C worked well and it was cool, most of the time. Good lighting with the bathroom quite large. Plenty of towels. A small safe which worked in the closet. We paid $145.00 per night, no tax. No pets allowed ANYWHERE on base.

The Very Sad: Employees seemed to have a rather bad attitude. Like it was a bother for them to be there. They are folks from the local Hawaiian community of Waimanalo. We saw MANY...and I mean, MANY carts/electric vehicles/cars/trucks with supervisors...but not many "workers'. What's the old saying...too many chiefs and not enough Indians. Saw them parked MANY times at the BX...getting water, food, snacks, etc. MANY breaks, I assume.
There is a Subway right next to the BX...by the beach. We tried one sub. The place is dirty. Sub was on whole wheat bread that was SOOOO dry it fell apart as we ate it. Cold cuts/cheese had NO taste and hardly any oil/vinegar. SO dry. Hubby went back for a refund. A young guy made a fuss about it saying he should have returned it(?) It was $8.00 and hubby is 58 years old...does he really think a scam is being pulled? I would stay clear of Subway. Washer and dryer area by BX...but they were sad. Rusted and pretty dirty...but several folks were using them. It is about a mile and half ride from the main entrance to the area where one stays. Not much around the immediate area...you need to drive about 20 minutes+ for restaurants, shops, etc.
The appliances in our condo were RUSTED...I assume from folks opening the windows and letting in the ocean air with salt. I never knew an oven could rust...but it was here. Same thing with fridge...and then they must have sanded the rust off and then used spray paint to try to conceal. This is all in a condo unit that is only about 10 years old or so.

The Very Dirty:
Where do I begin?
Outside of condo building needs a good power wash and the grass needs attention. We got so many burrs from walking around the grounds. Butts by the stairs(no smoking??) that no one picked up. Windows were FLITHY.
Flooring is rather odd as it is ONLY PAINTED CEMENT...no rugs...ONLY PAINTED CEMENT. Sand and dust balls prevail. The vinyl sofa/chair had much dust on it. The refrigerator and freezer needed a very good cleaning...as both smelled bad. The dinnerware needed all to be washed(no dishwasher) as one plate I went to use...HAD BEEN USED and LEFT. The entrance mat and the lanai mat were DISGUISTING...hadn't been cleaned in 10 years. The lanai had bird droppings and the furniture was VERY dirty. Mud wasps nests on the ceiling and walls of lanai. Tracks on the sliding glass door...you guessed it...FILTHY. The glass panel on the shower needs some LimeAway as it was so water stained. Bathroom floor was sandy...no one had vacuumed. Kitchen counters needed Windex to get all the furniture polish off them...yes, furniture polish. The back of the entrance door had so many hand marks they had outlines. Valance was off the living room verticals.

There are a/c condos in 2 buildings on 2 floors. One can camp with tent with permit. Rustic TINY cabins with NO air/electricity. Duplexes(most) which do not have a/c so folks keep the windows and doors(both) open for air ventilation. They look rather beat up and basic. There is a Hale Ali'i house(2 sides) which has air splits and is much more private and in nicer location.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay at Bellows. It is VERY CLEAR the housekeeping staff does the VERY minimum to get by...and no one is checking behind them. Again, condo units are only about 10 years old...they should not look as a they do.

I hope the person in charge reads this and takes some action.

Please give me a Heads Up vote if my review was helpful to your and yours. Aloha.

Deep blue water, consistent waves and a clean beach made Bellows a refreshing change from overcrowded and dirty Waikiki where we were staying.
At Bellows, there is a shoppette, Subway and showers/changing rooms.
We enjoyed the day there.

Long, beautiful beach with few people. Cabins could use updating but the gorgeous scenery and low price makes up for that. Such a relaxing vacation, but also close to Hanauma Bay snorkeling Beach, other scenic beaches,

We stayed in a renovated cabin. It was not on the oceanfront but very nice. A peaceful get away for military families with a gorgeous beach. Housekeeping and Front Desk go out of their way to accommodate your needs.
