Hotel Rex, a Joie de Vivre hotel
Ranked #62 of 230 Hotels in San Francisco
Certificate of Excellence

Our stay at Hotel Rex was thoroughly adequate. I booked the room on a special they were having, which was the best price I could find on short notice for a central SF location. I tried to curb my review to be as objective and generous as possible, with awareness that just because the style of the hotel doesn't match my taste, doesn't mean it provides a poor stay.

PROS:
- Excellent location.
- The hotel was VERY clean and well kept. The antique furniture was well preserved and the mattress looked new.
- Cleaning service was thorough.
- Our 'deluxe' room had a huge flat screen TV.
- Our room was wonderfully quiet at night; we couldn't hear adjoining rooms or noise outside.
- Staff provided an extra blanket when requested.

CONS:
- Our room was missing one face towel and any shampoo upon arrival.
- For a 'deluxe' room, I think it was lacking some amenities, like a hair dryer or mini fridge.
- The mattress was hard, and I generally prefer hard mattresses.
- The one window had an A/C unit in it, so we couldn't close it at night when we were cold (thus the request for an extra blanket).
- Staff was professional but not welcoming or friendly.

I'm torn on whether I'd recommend Hotel Rex. I think it could be a wonderful stay for those who are willing to overlook minor disappointments in order to get the historic, boutique hotel feel.

Room Tip: I'm not sure the the deluxe king room is worth the price difference.

A gem. Excellent location, great service, boutique vibe. Quiet room in the heart of the city, with fantastic beds. Slept better at the Rex than I do at home. A hop, skip and a jump from Sears Fine Food, which is great for breakfast or lunch.

Stayed here on business for the second time, a perfectly nice stay. The location is convenient for work but Union Square can be kind of loud and touristy. Overall a comfortable stay. I especially appreciated the air conditioning unit!

Lovely hotel with lots of character in a good central location within easy walking distance of Union Square (5 mins) , Chinatown (10 mins) and North Beach (20 mins).
Small recepiton area merges seamlessly into the welcoming and cosy and atmospheric Library bar where you can enjoy a complimentary glass of wine in the evening and avail of a nice range of bar food at reasonable prices if you get too comfortable to venture out for dinner after a tring day of sightseeing.

Hotel is immaculately clean with bright airy well lit corridors full of original and quirky artwork. Room was lovely if slightly compact by American standards (though not by downtown standards). The staff, from the small front desk team right through to the bar staff and cleaners were without exception , friendly and helpful and always ready with a warm (and genuine) smile.

Altogther a lovely experience and a perfect alternative to the big chain hotels in the area. Would definitely return if in San Francisco again and will be looking out for other Joie De Vivre hotels on our future travels in America

If want to be transported back to early 20th century literary society, then the Hotel Rex is a good place to stay. It is a small boutique hotel in one of the oldest buildings in San Francisco. It's Library Bar is its centerpiece, lined with old books and a cozy feel. The atmosphere breeds friendliness as guests and locals congregate there and seem willing to get to know each other. The desk staff is very friendly and top notch. The rooms are all very comfortable and clean. They have flat screen TVs with lots of channels and free wifi. Only downside is not gym on the premises. They have a deal with a health club a block away in which you can buy a pass for $15/day.

Funky, historic library feel of this renovated boarding house. We loved the art throughout and the comfortable lobby and restaurant. Comfortable beds. Staff were accommodating in allowing us to keep bags and car in valet for the remainder of our visit the last day.

I love The Rex. Good bottomless coffee for free all morning. A glass of wine every evening. And everyone so helpful and friendly! Needs a good cleaning but I'll happily return. Location is good and library bar fantastic!
