“Small cozy room did the job.”

I have to say i read sooo many negative things about this hotel that we were tempted to change the resevation to another hotel but since i know some people may exaggerate a little we decided to stick to it and glad we did every thing is fairly close there's a bus stop right on the corner the room and the bath room is clean my bathroom did have a rubber mat the room is small but we didn't go to sleep we went to enjoy what san francisco had to offer the breakfast was just toast, eggs and yogurt enough for us we actually saved money eating there. The reason why i gave the hotel 4 points is because the walls are thin and i think is hunted atleast room 413 but i didn't mind the opal friendly ghost. the area isn't all that bad keep in mind this is down town and mostly all the down town are the same atleast here in miami fl is similar to there just stick to the mels diner's street and you'll be just fine. wanted to add the staff were really friendly and we would stay in this hotel again keep up the good work.

We were pleasantly surprised by the Opal after reading some negative reviews. Our room and bathroom were clean and well equipped, the downtown location great, the price a good value, the continental breakfast just fine, the housekeeping staff efficient, and the front desk staff couldn't have been nicer. When we said we were in town to celebrate my husband's 64th birthday, the manager had a bottle of wine and two glasses sent up to our room--and it was pretty darn good wine, too! We enjoyed our 5-day stay immensely. Only two minor complaints: The hotel is an older building with thin walls, and loud talking can sometimes be heard from adjoining rooms. Also, the bathtub was slippery and could have used a rubber mat. But certainly nothing there to keep us from staying at the Opal again on our next trip to San Francisco!

Room Tip: Ask for fifth (top) floor facing Geary Street. Good urban views from windows and probably less noise...

We had an amazing week in San Fran but no thanks to hotel! The noise level within the hotel is extremely loud, no peace. We made a number of complaints to reception about the constant party in the room next to us but nothing was done. Breakfast is laughable. The biggest issue I have is that they take a $50 deposit which they say they will refund on your departure! We are still waiting 8 months later! Would not recommend staying here. .

To start, overall we had a fine experience at the Opal. However, it started at check in with finding out they no longer had any parking spaces available for our cars. The front desk gentleman was very good working with me while I was obviously upset. We were referred to the multi level movie theater parking a couple of blocks away, which seemed fairly secure and not too far away. We were able to unload our baggage in the loading zone, then go find parking. The parking wouldn't have been a big deal, except they say on their website they have parking.

The room was fine, the walls are definitely thin. I was awakened with talking and walking, so if you are a light sleeper, you probably will not get much rest. The bed was comfortable. The breakfast was danishes, yogurt and canned/jarred fruit salad. Everybody that worked there was extremely helpful and nice. They are the reason I gave the rating very good. It was a good deal and they made it seem like every guest was their first priority.

It wasn't a bad place for the price. Parking was a little strange. They billed the wrong credit card. Not a huge deal. The room was clean. Very small. We would stay again.

Only complaint I have is room noise. The sound proofing keeps the outside noise quite, our room was facing an intersection and you could hardly hear it. However the inner walls seemed to be made of rice paper and any loud noise (door slamming, baby crying, tv blaring etc...) seemed to bleed through. But I'm a heavy sleeper so it didn't bother me, but keep it in mind if that sort of thing bothers you.

Make no mistake, this is a very tired property. The only reason we were forced to take stay at this hotel is the airline cancelled our planned PM flight out of SFO one week before our arrival. The hotel we had booked for this first part of our stay, The Donatello, was unable to extend our stay so we moved hotels for one night. The room at the Opal was small and very cramped. It also reeked of something (and we are not sure what it was) but I don't think it was history. The bathroom was very small and only had a small shower. It is located on a major thorough fare but there are only 2 restaurants close by. Mel's Dive -In and Tommy's Joynt. The neighborhood is sketchy and dirty. Since our choice was a last minute selection the room had to be prepaid with no refund. The rate was like all last minute rates, 3 times the going rate for this property or from $109.00 to $299.00 for our last night in San Francisco. What a RIP!

Room Tip: Chose the Donatello. It is closer to Union Square. Has a much better location and the rate is compar...
