I have read some reviews the the SFD is a bit tired and could be updated. I don't disagree. The elevator was incredibly slow.

And I found the local area very touristy.

However, the plus's more than outweigh the minus's. The lobby is a testament to a by-gone era and has a certain iconic charm and energy. Not mad about the costumes of the doormen - a little tacky for my taste. Iced water available 24/7 and tea and coffee in the morning.

The bed was extremely comfortable and the solid walls of old worked - I didn't hear a thing and I'm a light sleeper. Likewise my air con didn't make a sound and was adjustable. Bathroom is adequate. Similar comment for wifi - fine for everyday use but if you want to have a conference or facetime , you will need to upgrade and pay for the higher speed.

The hotel is right in the middle of downtown. For shoppers, the location is paradise. Wallgreens is directly opposite, Starbucks adjacent and all the big brand names, Nostrum, Macy's, Saks, Barneys, Crate & Barrel, Abercrombie, shoe designer warehouse etc are all close by.

The Bart station is a 5 minute walk ; the trolley cars go up and down the Powell with frequency.

The food in La Scala - I had breakfast and dinner - was excellent. It wasn't cheap but nowhere is cheap in San Francisco. I didn't make it to the skylight bar but i'm told the the views of the city were awesome.

Do check in advance if they are charging a facility fee (this is for the "free" wifi, bike rentals, $10 credit). I was charged $22 per night but my confirmation didn't state this; this was on top of taxes of @ $45 but I was not given any £$10 credit on check-in. I queried this with them and they immediately offered a refund on the facility fee.

Also, if you opt not to have your room cleaned, make sure you get a "green" voucher which amounts to $10 which can be used for F&B.

All in all, the hotel and its location worked well.

The doormen at the hotel in their costumes think it's smart to act smart with their guests. They're unhelpful, do not u load luggage from the cars unless asked and on the rude side.
Rooms are abominable - tiny like pigeon holes. The bathrooms are actually pigeon holes - the WC and washbasin share the same standing space.

The Airconditioners make the most God awful sound, their breakfast is highway robbery. All in all, the experience was so sub par, it ruined San Francisco for me.

It's a run down property. Don't stay there. Look opposite the street and stay in the Marriott or the Taj Campton. This is an expensive waste of time.

Yikes! Thank you for coming to check us out, prinx74. This is certainly not the type of experience or feeling we want any guest leaving with. We will be discussing these comments with our team, specifically our doormen. As the first point of contact and the most recognized ambassadors of our hotel, your experience with them is not typical of the spirit of service we take pride in.

We hope for a chance to gain your trust again in the future; but thank you again for trying us out and taking the time to share your review.

I stayed two nights here on business and had a wonderful stay. Rooms are small but nicely appointed. The lobby is striking, and I enjoyed socializing with other guests there. The standout for this hotel was their concierge service. Hailey was exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful in making restaurant suggestions and reservations.

Overall a solid and reasonable nights stay for a one night stop before travelling overseas. I would recommend it overall as the service and accommodations were solid. My schedule did not allow me to enjoy the cuisine but the staff and guests seem to mix and enjoy the atmosphere.

We stayed at this Kimpton for two nights and enjoyed our stay! We booked a king/room with a view and are so glad we did! Our room was one of the bigger ones and had a great city view! We love kimptons and loved the old city feel of this one! My one criticism is that we arrived around 230 and our room was not quite ready; no problem for us as we wanted lunch. We gave the lady our number however never received a call our room was ready. In fact the same woman was a bit snappy with us upon our return 1.5 hours later and did not provide us with the "check-in" details other guests recoded. Overall great location and nice rooms!

After a two week car drive threw California we decided that the last day would be sent in luxury. I think I was charmed by the oversized modern contemporary furnitures on the picture, and the high ceilings.

Our firs impression was; wow this is a gorgeous place, and the quite stuffed beefeather out side helping us with the suitcases made me feel like a princess.. I should have worn high heels and a Prada bag.. But came with a wrench set, Makita tools and a bag of food from the car...
The mood was really nice, and the people there where all from ordinary tourists, business people and a couple of too nicely dress ladies. And they all gathered around for the free complementary lunch drinks that they have every day. An American te-time?

The hotel was perfect situated close the the shopping streets, we could walk to the cable car stop, we even strolled down to the financial district and the Embarcadero to walk along the pier and see the fishmarked (for those who like to walk). The ûber trip back took us threw the beautiful Columbus Ave, just like we have seen on film. And it is also closely situated to Chinatown just up the hill.

We came late that day and they had changed our rooms to an upgraded top floor room with the view over the city. And at night when we all went to bed, we just turned of the lights and looked at the city lights and heard the buzzing sound of the people many floors down.

We did not try the restaurant there even though they all recommanded it ( we just wanted to try out the old diners just around the corner)

I didn't attend, but I was told everything was very nice and the food was average. Everyone seemed to be pleased with the event. We went with the buffet because I wasn't told until one week before the event that everyone had to have their dinner choice before they arrived. It was a group of 45 physicians from all over the country and there was not way I could have gotten them ahead of time. It would have been nice to know this so it could have been incorporated with the RSVP.
