We recently returned from 2 nights at the Donatello. The property is nearing the end of renovations. Our floor (5th) smelled of new paint, but the room itself didn't appear to have been updated recently. All of the hotel staff we dealt with were very helpful and friendly. We used the sofa bed and were only supplied with 3 pillows for the room (total) and a partial set of bedding for the sofa bed. A call to housekeeping solved the problem very quickly, and the sofa bed was actually quite comfortable. The room was spacious and well laid-out, and despite appearing a little dated, was very clean. The only downside to our stay was noise from the street. Had I paid attention to other reviewers, I would definitely request a room away from the street. This was quite an issue on Sunday morning, when at 6:30 a.m., chanting through a bullhorn awakened our family. Evidently, workers at a hotel across the street are on strike and kept up quite a racket for an hour and a half. I called the front desk to request that we be moved for the following night, but was assured that the protesters only caused this commotion on the weekends. Sure enough, Monday morning only brought the standard street noise. The room is equipped with a mini fridge, microwave and plates, dishes & flatware for 2 people which made it easy & convenient to have breakfast & snacks in the room. Free coffee & tea are available on the top floor 24 hours a day. The location is 3 blocks from the main entrance to Chinatown, a 5 minute walk to nearby public transportation and easy walking to shops galore. Valet parking was convenient, and compared to some other area hotels, wasn't too bad at $28/night. Overall, the hotel is very comfortable, in a safe area and everyone was pleasant and made a point to engage us (and our kids) in conversation. I would stay here again if I travel to San Francisco.
