My friend and I stayed in room 35 the first of September, 2011, and got bed bugs! The bedding was the oldest I have ever seen in a hotel. And yes, the bedspreads really are that garish. The staff was helpful and pleasant, but they really need to throw out all the beds and bedding and probably the carpet, too. Now we are both having to deal with getting rid of bedbugs in our homes, and it is not fun.

An over priced hotel that is OK for a stay. Rooms are very small but clean and OK. Location is not bad: walking distance to castro and mission districts that are nice for going out. However, it's far from Union Station. Fortunately, the hotel is placed right at Market St and you can just take a tram and go to that area and Embarcadero very easily. This hotel would be a great option if it wasn't for the price. They offer parking for 15$/day at a nearby location which is very convenient.

We made our reservation based on several good ratings in Trip Advisor. The room smelled of cigarettes although we were assured it was a non-smoking room. The smoke detector was beeping and when we asked the front desk attendant about it he said that he had tried to replace the battery, but that didn't fix the beeping so he just unplugged it. In the middle of the night the fire alarm went off 3 times and we noticed some guests were smoking in their rooms. We also noticed fire smoke smell that permeated the entire top floor. Needless to say a horrible night. The front desk attendant claimed the smoke alarms were all false alarms! The furniture has been painted over countless times instead of being replaced. Very musty and dusty. We will not return.

Many of the comments about this hotel on this site sum up everything that is problematic about using Trip Advisor. People have complained that this hotel is in a dangerous area. It is not. It is on the edge of Tenderloin which is rough but not actually dangerous and if you don't fancy going there just walk around it or catch public transport. It is not difficult. There have been complaints that it is noisy. Once again, it is not. We had a room overlooking very busy Market Street and with the window closed there was no noise at all. People complain that the rooms are small. Yes, this is true but it is a budget hotel for Christ's sake! The rooms are of a perfectly adequate size unless you have mountains of luggage and who wants to spend much time in their hotel room anyway? The rooms are clean and the central location is great. The room rate is extremely good and the staff are helpful. One has to really wonder about the people who are complaining. Do they work for the opposition? Are they people who have never left home before? Or are they just stupid and/or malicious? I find this with every hotel that I ever stay at. I have a perfectly pleasant experience and then I read a load of utter garbage written about it on Trip Advisor. This really makes Trip Advisor essentially worthless in terms of its ratings because there is no quality control and no means of assessing the motives or prejudices of the reviewers.

Was a little shocked when first arrived at hotel, very old and rooms were very small, bathrooms quite large. In not a bad location, we could walk into city centre, no problems. Close to Laundromat. Some good restaurant around and on transport. If you want minimal and modern this isn't the place for you. A little noisy....but hey this is San Fran! Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. Quite enjoyed stay here. With some renovating this would be a beautiful hotel with lots of charm of yesteryear.
