We took a pole boat tour while in FL for spring break. A lovely way to spend the morning and see parts of the Everglades that can't be seen any other way. We drifted within 12 feet of a wood stork standing in shallow water, and over a submerged alligator. Our guide was knowledgeable and pleasant, and he did all the work! Awesome!

Pole boat through the Everglades swamp, entering the Turner River under highway 41 bridge just east of the big panther statue, where you meet up with your guide and proprietor, young Jack. Swamp Celtic by background and having spent his youth camping and canoeing the quiet reaches of the Turner, Jack is joy to listen to, as he poles you silently past the lurking alligators, calling attention to wild orchids and other exotic plant species. Silently you approach large birds swimming with the current while fishing, vigilant to the alligator haunts, and taking flight as they approach each one, only to settle again a few meters downstream. Jack not only knows the swamps, he knows the lore of the locale and of the local inhabitants including the aboriginals and his people, the ancient Celtic settlers in the region, and also the current politics of park policy. Altogether an enriching and enchanting experience for $200 for two passengers in comfortable swivel seats with backs, on a 2 hours sunset canoe trip. We topped off the evening with a delicious fish dinner at the Camellia St Grill in Everglades City, 10 minutes further west. Then a comfortable hours drive back to Miami on Alligator Alley, the Tamiami Trail, (highway 41).
