This is the new kid on the Asheville dining scene and roared in with thundering publicity in the newspapers etc as a 'different' kind of Mexican with a veg Chef who understands veg cooking and dining. Well, it is different all right. Definitely not a Tex Mex. But what a let down. Starting with the decor and the waitstaff, it is more casual than a casual restaurant yet charges fine dining prices that suggest NYC. There are rope lights all around that are just so kitschy and naked incandescent bulbs. The waitstaff appear as if just out of their beds. The menu will give you a sticker shock. The margarita is priced at $9 and comes in a gimlet sized glass that is just full of ice. The guacamole at $9 was not too bad (though it could use some more seasoning) but came in a small stone bowl. The chips were supermarket quality and the salsas were totally devoid of any flavor as was the pico da gallo. The taco and empanada plates had interesting fillings but teh empanadas came all stuffed with queso instead of the stated exotic fillings. The rice was the only redeeming item. The refried beans (yes, refried in this fine dining restaurant) tasted just awful. When I asked for the wifi p/w, I was told the owner never gives it out since it consumes a lot of data! What???? You charge $25 for a plate and cannot afford to offer wifi???
At this price level and this poor quality offering, I doubt if this place will last too long unless they get their act together. Head over to Salsas a couple of blocks away for a much better meal.
