“This hostel feels like home”
Reviewed 31 July 2011

I just returned from a 2 week stay at the hostel. I cannot speak highly enough about the professionalism of the staff, their dedication to detail and how hard they work. The rooms are very clean and comfortable and I slept like a baby on the Posturepedic mattress. When meals are prepared for evening meal ($5) the quality is great. Matt made the most amazing Fish Tacos with top quality fish (fresh)...all of the help seem to be amazing cooks, and there was plenty to go around with salad and desert available. I made a lot of friends at the hostel and will be staying in touch. Large Refrigerator/Freezer for storage of your meal items. Great cozy living room with several comfortable couches for curling up and watching a movie together. James, Matt, Serella and Ashley... you provided exceptional customer service 100% of the time and are true professionals. I will be coming back. :))

Point Loma Hostel is the first hostel I have ever stayed in, and I chose it over staying at expensive hotels in San Diego the second time I went. It has a delicious make-it-yourself but free pancake breakfast. The staff was helpful but not pushy. Huge common area. Clean private rooms. The bathrooms were sort of unfortunate (like dorm showers you could say) but clean. It is located in a residential neighborhood right by a taco place and a grocery store. It is a long walk to the beach, but walkable nonetheless. You do have to take a bus to get downtown, but the transit system there is cheap and easy. I would stay here again in a millisecond.

The location is nice, close to the beach, there's parking, and organic coop store is very close. The hostel is cozy, with friendly atmosphere, a piano and a patio. Rooms are pretty comfortable. I'd give 5 stars, but take one star off for some customer service issues, which are being addressed apparently, as this hostel has sensible management that knows how to run the hostel. The place is relaxing and has lots of older people staying, so it's not a party place and one can get sleep there.

We stayed at the Point Loma Hostel for five nights to explore San Diego. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and make you feel very welcome. The hostel is in nice residential area with grocery stores a block away, and a few miles away from Ocean Beach a funky area of town with great restaurants, Wed night market and friendly beach.
The hostel was very clean, and the rooms very nice with nice bedding and comfortable beds. I was impressed with the bathrooms, and the little touches of bath mats and shower racks. The hostel was well decorated with informative information on the walls.
It was very quiet at night until the morning. One morning, there was a young unsupervised boy running up and down the halls and making lots of noise about 7:30 in the morning. Having kids, even I wasn't impressed but that's nothing to do with the hostel but more with other guests. The kitchen facilities were good and my kids enjoyed the free pancakes in the morning and the $5 meals, pasta or all you could salad, veggie or meat burgers, and dessert. I would definitely stay here again. The outside area was lovely with tables and heaters at night and a hammock. This hostel attracts the people who want a quieter place to stay and it is a great find. You do need a car I think if you were to stay here, as we didn't see one bus while we were here.

Like others will say great community kitchen, good staff (some are better than others - all are typical aimless youth - get the job done but dont expect much [james is awesome]). Parking is not easy, locals park there + people who work there = little room for you, but if your willing to drive in circles a few times you will find parking (watch the no parking signs). There is a grocery store about a block away, other than that you will need a bus or your own transportation. I would recommend as it is safe, however they did have a couple of odd people there (couple were doing almost legal drugs outside), I would not worry about it. Also, as most travelers you will want to stay at the Hostels on the beach - dont, this place is where you need to stay - read the other reviews - they are spot on. I had no issues here other than a few bathroom doors that dont lock (and they were fixing them :) ) and a couple of odd people. Basically for a hostel in the US this is a 8 out of 10. They do have ear plugs in the lobby, most of this part of town is flown over by airplanes.

While the facilities provided by the Point Loma hostel are good (big kitchen, plenty of bathrooms, tv room, internet, outdoor space, etc), my friend and I were disappointed by the level of cleanliness. Our brown bedsheets smelt like they had been slept on, and the pillows were covered with stains and smelt so strongly of other people that we used our own towels as pillows. In the bathrooms 'hand towels' are provided in a basket lined with filthy cloth - these did not smell fresh, perhaps a consequence of over-use or ineffective washing? I wonder if the hostel uses some kind of eco-detergent - if so, it's not working. Sure, we'd all like to reduce the amount of chemicals being tipped into our oceans and waterways, but we also like sleeping on clean sheets when we have paid to do so! We chose an HI hostel as we have come to associate a certain standard with the brand. We stayed at the HI Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco recently, where we were provided with crisp, white sheets and clean pillows. This was not the case at Point Loma. As noted in other reviews, the hostel is under a flight path and the walls are very thin - noise + stinky sheets was not conducive to a good night's sleep!

Also, the HI website promised 'ample free public parking outside the hostel' - perhaps we were there at a busy time, but we had to park two blocks away. Most of the available parking was on residential streets outside private homes - this was not the 'public parking' we had expected! I would not reccomend staying here without a car, as other than the grocery store, there is little of use or interest within easy walking distance.

I went with my young son, we stayed in both the twin bunks and the mixed dorm. I liked the twin bunks room, it was very tight in there but quiet. The mixed dorm was much roomier, but you have to be mindful of other people (of course). The hostel itself was very nice, and I liked that it had a grocery store and a couple of small restaurants nearby. Parking in the neighborhood is pretty limited, however, and there is a sign in the grocery store stating "No backpacks allowed", so obviously there have been some issues. I liked the do it yourself pancake breakfasts and the theme nights for dinner. My son was VERY appreciative of the fact the common room has a Wii, big screen TV, and DVD player, as were the other kids that were staying there. :) The staff at Point Loma is awesome. It is a bit off the beaten path, so if you don't have a car, you may want to stay downtown or in Ocean Beach. But it was centrally located for all the things we wanted to do.
