We have stayed in this hostel in the past and things have changed.

The good was that the hostel has not stayed still, they have continued to keep the place clean and neat. We were pleasantly surprised with our private room to get an in room bathroom, window AC, and mini fridge. The location (heart of the Gaslamp) was great for walking to the Embarcadaro, Seaport Village, and all around the Gaslamp. The location of our room was pretty good as far as limiting street noise.

The not so good was the change in the breakfast. In the past we were offered various fruits, bread, oats, cocoa...for this trip we were offered oranges, pop tarts, granola bars, oats and the cocoa ran out on our first day. We had to explain to one of the international guests what a pop tart was.

Room tip: Don't be shy about asking for a private room if you are traveling with family

Located in the middle of San Diego's Gas lamp district the hostel is a 10-15 minute walk from Broadway (busses) and 10 minutes walk to Horton Plaza ( shopping centre).
Free decent speed WIFI.
The Hostel is surrounded by Bars and Restaurant's and the "Economy" rooms are very noisy at night with noise from the street and restaurant's.
The Premium room was quiet but very small with bunks crammed in that squeaked loudly when the guest in the top bunk moved.
The bed above mine had a sweat or urine stain on the bottom and the room needed some air freshener as it smelled of old towels and washing the windows could not be opened.
The interior of the Hostel is very nice with lots of local Art hanging from the walls and a games room with pool table.
The free breakfast was a bagel, some oatmeal packs and a muesli bar. There is also a coffee machine and a juice dispenser.
The staff were very friendly and happy to answer any questions i had.
overall i would recommend this hostel only for a night to stay in the Gas lamp district but not for any longer due to the high cost and noise.

Room tip: Premium rooms are at the back of the building away from the street noise.

This is one of the best hostels I've ever been to - beautifully clean with great air con for hotter days and nights. Has all the amenities you could want including fast free wifi and great free breakfast. But the best thing is the staff - they're so friendly and helpful - talk to them for the best tips and info about SD!

Room tip: Get a premier room for a more chilled out experience with only 4 bunks

I really love idea of Hostelling International non-profit hostels, so we again decided to stop tjere for 3 nights. Room was spacious and comfortable, we had our own bathroom. Unfortunately we couldn't open the window andAC was quite loud so it was hard to sleep. Breakfast was included, but it was rather poor. Anyhow, it all is compensated by great location in the heart od historic Gaslamp Quarter.
