Review of The Sofia Hotel
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 weeks ago
I would have given an excellent review but at the time of our visit, the combination of one-way street and construction closing streets may it difficult to arrive to the hotel on our initial arrival. This is not a fault to the hotel but it was an inconvenience.

Let's start with the negatives - BIG CONS: room stinks from a stale, nasty odour... and the property did not advise when booking of construction work that was going to be taking place right above our room from 10.30pm to 5am!!!! I find that sneaky and we should get a partial refund for that. Location of this property is good for downtown and the harbour but it is a bit rundown with a lot of homeless people in the surrounding area (not the hotel's fault, for sure). I think I enjoyed more staying by the beach on another property. We decided to spend a little more money for a larger bedroom, which inside was lovely and had a very useful microwave. Comfy bed, good WIFI, A/C and TV worked fine (although the US has so much advert time, that you barely watch the programme in the end). Coffee machine was terrible, especially for the money paid. Not exactly sure why they have a resort fee added to the bill as there are no real amenities. Staff are fine, though fairly unengaged. Just seemed like an old downtown style hotel without a lot of charm of an old hotel.

Room tip: larger rooms are better than the smaller ones.

Great hotel in a nice location walking distance to the train station and waterfront. The staff is very friendly and accommodating.

This is one of the worst hotel experiences I have ever had. 1) A standard room is no place for more than one person to sleep at a time. Why? The bedroom opens right to the sink and bathroom. I slept on a pullout sofa bed but to use the bathroom had to wake up the person sleeping in the bed. 2) The WiFi--for which you are charged $25 a night, no exceptions or opt-out, it is a "convenience fee," was terrible. I tried to have a business video call at 4 am PST, connection was terrible. Could not get full signal. Could not do video visit for work. Room is old and dingy. Bathroom is like a prison cell and shower, good luck if you do anything other than keep your elbows by your side.

Room tip: If you are traveling by yourself, fine. If you are with another person, not a good stay.

They added an additional $75/night which they only announced when we showed up to check in. Additionally, some amenities they advertise online and in other materials are not valid -- yoga's no longer featured, food downstairs is closed so no room service, etc. The hotel itself is historic and in a great location, and the staff were certainly friendly, but we still felt a bit taken advantage of. Would NOT recommend staying here if trying to visit downtown/Gaslamp.

Hotel quality very disappointing. Room & furnishings very dated. A/C didn’t work properly. The hotel seems to be on the decline..I don’t know if it is the entire area (Gaslamp District) or just this hotel. Did have to walk around homeless sleeping beside ti front door.
