“A decent place to lay your head if you are on a budget”
Reviewed 14 April 2012

I stayed hear on business in late February. Stayed here since my work only reimburses a limited amount of my travel expenses.

The Good:
- Decent bed and pillows.
- Room has mini-fridge.
- Included breakfast was nice.
- Free cocktail hour for priority club members.
- Friendly and helpful staff
- Free shuttle to/from the airport

Downsides:
- This location is quite far from the convention center.
- Homeless are all over the streets near this hotel after 7pm.
- Rooms are SMALL
- Walls are THIN (could hear the neighboring room's whining child)
- Hotel feels a bit old and poorly cared for. Rooms were okay, but the overall atmosphere was underwhelming.

Room Tip: All the rooms are small. If you need space to spread out, or just care about being able to use the b...

Dear TallyGourmand,

Thank you for staying with us. We are pleased you enjoyed the room amenities as well as our breakfast options. Our hotel is very proud of its level of service, cleanliness and quality of its product and for this reason your comments are very troubling and will certainly be looked into. We are sorry the size of your room fell below your expectations. While we understand that your stay was not 100% satisfactory, we would hope that you would give us another chance to make your stay as best as it can be.

If there is anything we can do to make your next stay more comfortable, please do not hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,

This is an older property that has been beautifully updated. It's in a great location and the staff is very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. There are 2 really charming restaurants, the Sole Luna Cafe and the Indigo Cafe, with some great food located just steps from the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the west.

For a 3 star hotel it deserves top praise. Our second week we spent at the Monte Carlo in Las Vegas which was a 4 star hotel and though the Holiday Inn's room may not be quite as big or "pretty" we felt the Holiday Inn's value outshone Monte Carlo. We had Wi-Fi in the room - which is helpful when you are not travelling with laptops but only smart phones (Monte Carlo offered high speed internet by way of plugging in a cord - not helpful when you have a phone and not a laptop with you). We always had replenished toiletries and more than enough fresh towels. Room and bathroom was very clean and beds comfortable. Holiday Inn offered coffee facilities in rooms and had good TV channels. Holiday Inn offered a laundry room where guests could do their own laundry at no major cost - a few quarters and it was all done. Furthermore, they have an in-house restaurant and shuttle bus which took guests to "hot spots" (Seaworld, etc) within 3 miles from hotel free of charge. Two computers with internet access were stationed in their waiting area near check-in and was free of charge. My husband needed emergency dentist services and upon request the hotel staff assisted in finding a local dentist and made the necessary telephone calls on his behalf. The only tiny negative experience we had was when we checked in: the person on duty could not find our our booking but we showed our voucher, she made a telephone call and then found us a room.

As for location. This hotel is not close to the harbour area but well situated for getting to the Gaslamp Quarter and less than 10mins walk to the local shopping mall, Horton Plaza. We managed to walk from San Diego Zoo back to the hotel via Balboa Park. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the sightseeing on our way back to the hotel. It took about 15-20min walk from the hotel to the harbour area but that was probably because we were sightseeing on our way and therefore in no rush.

Room Tip: If you want a room with one bed make sure you ask for it upon check-in. We had just landed from an...

If I return to San Diego, I would definitely stay in the Holiday Inn Express Downtown again. The employees go the extra 10 miles to make your stay in San Diego pleasurable. Midge is the very visible customer relations agent who not only welcomes you at breakfast and in the lobby, but gets to know the guests and does what she can to ensure the comfort of all the guests. We heard another guest say that Midge brought a cupcake with a birthday candle to their room when she heard there was a birthday to be celebrated there. The front desk receptionists always, (and I really do mean always) had a smile on their faces. They all serve as concierge as well front desk receptionists. No one that I talked to ever had to wait, and the receptionists called cabs, the zoo, restaurants, the bus and trolley line, and museums to help with travel arrangements for us. (Special thanks to Zulya and Martha.) There is a free shuttle (actually the hotel has two) and these will take you to the airport, cruise port, the Amtrak station, the zoo, or Balboa Park anytime you schedule them ahead, and on the spur of the moment if they are free. There are warm, freshly baked cookies in the lobby to welcome guests every evening. There is free wine and beer for two happy hours every afternoon. Every morning they provide a free hot breakfast with pancakes, biscuits and gravy, bananas, cereal, warm cinnamon rolls, pastries, coffee, all kinds of juices, eggs, and bacon or sausage. If you can't take time for breakfast, they give you a "to-go" bag with water, fruit, cookie, and granola bar. The hotel is three blocks away from a San Diego trolley stop. The hotel is an older building, but it is very clean, and the rooms are large. It looked to me like the carpet in the halls was new. I am sure the carpet in our room was new. Most rooms have a private balcony. Our room had a refrigerator, and we didn't even ask, so I assume they are standard. Wi-Fi was free, and worked great! We walked outside late at night (between 11 PM and midnight), and were not afraid in the least (we being two single women). The reasons I didn't give this hotel 5 stars is because it is an older hotel, the bathroom was small, the only sink was in the bathroom, and there is no room service or restaurant in the hotel. We knew no-one in San Diego when we arrived, and had a difficult time selecting a hotel. We really made the right choice by staying here.

I knew from prior reviews of the small bathrooms and slow Internet. The staff went above and beyond my highest expectation. The breakfast was well stocked with both healthy and not-so-healthy choices. The staff constantly kept the place well stocked, with cereals, milks, hard boiled eggs, bananas, yogurt, Danish, bagels, oatmeal, pancakes (fresh from a cool machine), juices, coffee, gravy and biscuits, fresh cinnamon buns. Seriously, I'm not sure what more you can ask for. The staff handed out special candy for st Patrick's day.

Cookies after 8p, coffee/lemonade 24/7.

Govt workers received free parking, vouchers for downstairs cafe (indigo cafe $10 lunch $15 dinner).

Free shuttle to zoo which balboa park and has tons to see and do 10 museums/gardens trails. I tipped the driver the only $1 I had, and he was very grateful. I felt bad giving such a low tip! Our flight was late and they reimbursed up to $15 for a taxi.

The front desk dealt with grumpy customers with great skill and tact.

the hotel had very low tempreature in the corridors and all common areas. Also, it was under renovation which made us breath some solvents. The staff was very friendly. The location was perfect to go to the best restaurants and club nearby, at walking distance. The beds were very good, room clean and confortable, small bathroom. Breakfast very complete, with eggs, bacon, pankakes, waffels, fruits, yogurt, a selection of breads, juices and the american coffee.

I stay at Holiday Inns and Holiday Inns Express for most of my out-of-town travel and this spot is at the bottom of the list. The room smelled weird and the A/C was broken. The breakfast was unbelievably bad, even for Free Continental Breakfast items. Next time I am in SD, I might have to venture away from Holiday Inn.
